Lovin' Spoonful, The - Rain On The Roof Lyrics

You and me and rain on the roof,
Caught up in a summer shower,
Drying while it soaks the flowers.
Maybe we'll be caught for hours,
Waiting out the sun.
You and me, we're gabbing away
Dreamy conversation, sitting in the hay.
Honey, how long was I laughing in the rain with you?
Cause I didn't feel a drop til the thunder brought us to.
You and me underneath a roof of tin.
Pretty comfy feeling, how the rain ain't leaking in.
We can sit and dry just as long as it can pour.
Cause the way it makes you look makes me hope it rains some more.
You and me and rain on the roof,
Caught up in a summer shower.
Drying while it soaks the flowers
Maybe we'll be caught for hours,
Waiting out the sun.

  7. B.... L....

John Sebastian is one of the most underrated songwriters of the 60's / 70's era. Many of is songs are every bit as good a Lennon / McCartney in lyrics and musical beauty. Summer in the City is one of the really great ones. Nashville Cats...and this one...I've emailed John a few times over the years and being the fine gent he is...he always emails me back with a nice uplifting message. The 60's Summer of Love may have died at Woodstock (or Altamont, take your pick...) but some of the stars of that era are still living the spirit of it. He seems to be a very, very nice guy, someone you'd like to have as a neighbor or friend.

Listening to this in Tokyo (of all places) tonight and hearing the rain outside our window.
Pure comfort music to this old expat.

“At night I dream that you and I are two plants
    that grew together, roots entwined,
and that you know the earth and the rain like my mouth,
since we are made of earth and rain.”

Say it again, John wrote the most beautiful, sweet music.

  16. j.... s....

does anyone know what that Horn is?

    j.... s....

    Probably just a French horn.

  17. b.... ....

I really loved this song when I was a kid. Is John Sebastian singing this? Doesn't really sound like him.

  18. m.... m....

    So Sweet

  19. h.... ....

  22. R.... T....

Wow that brings back memories of when I was a young teenage girl oh if we could all step back into time when life was good. The music today cannot hold a candle to the days gone by.

    R.... T....

Oh my gosh you are so right!! Everything since those great days has sucked HORRIBLY. We were blessed!

It’s so bad I had to look it up

  26. L.... B....

This is honestly top 5 worst songs ever

  27. c.... b....

I played this for a friend of mine. She said it sounded like a kid song. We no longer speak.

    c.... b....

Maybe she had to be there. I was 16.

    c.... b....

not necessarily a bad thing. I call it lullaby rock!

  28. R.... M....

Reminds me of the tropical rain on Guam and running to the bus stops with tin roofs until the rain stopped. So you would get a little bit wet. Big deal. It would feel good and you would be dry in five minutes, anyway, which was about how long the tropical rain would last. Five years after typhoon Karen people were still living in Quonset huts with tin roofs. It seemed like every morning around 5:00 AM we would get a rain cloud sprinkling us. Before going to sleep we would have to wipe the termites off the sheets and they would climb back under the sheets by morning. We lived is a house that was built from WWII box crates and it was the best in the neighborhood. You could see the rain coming down under the clouds as they approached you, so you weren't taken by surprise. I lived there from age 12-14 and this song brings me there every time i hear it.

  29. c.... b....

I played it for an 80 year old man. He liked it. I miss you Doyle.

    c.... b....

    Beautiful

  30. T.... K....

Lovin' Spoonful -- so underrated. This song makes me feel so happy, so good!

  31. R.... N....

This song is a prime example of why John Sebastian and the Spoonful were so damn good; the lyrics, the melody and the instrumentation. I don't think these guys were ever appreciated for how good they were. They were one of the premier American bands of the time.

    R.... N....

The Youngbloods kind of fit that same mold.

  32. S.... L....

A graceful little song that always reminds me just how wonderful life
was back then. Being young and foolish wasn't bad at all.

  33. J.... K....

John Sebastian was such a talent. I'll never forge his moment in Woodstock...

    J.... K....

Woodstock occurred after he had left the Spoonful, earlier in the year, and his performance was not actually scheduled. It had been raining heavily, so they had to be careful with all the electrical equipment, amps, etc. on stage, which needed to be swept of water. John was there as a visitor, but was asked to fill-in while they cleared the stage.

  34. S.... a....

a sojoune on a rainy tuesday afternoon/w a spponfull of LUV

  35. R.... ....

I live in the attic of my house (for over 50 years) and when it rains I can hear the pitter-patter on the roof. I always think of this song.

  36. k.... ....

Thank you for posting!  So many great memories here . . .

  37. T.... P....

    always was a nice tune.

  38. f.... ....

I miss these guys. Hot town, summer in the city. . . did you ever have to make up your mind. . .

  39. C.... C....

I saw a documentary on the Lovin' Spoonful and they took a lot of pride in the fact that they didn't use studio back up musicians and played everything themselves. Then it showed them playing this live and there was John Sebastian play the HARP ( and I don't mean harmonica) on stage! Is there anything John Sebastian can't play?

  40. R.... B....

The music of John Sebastian is nourriture for the mind . . .

  41. K.... P....

No offense, but how did this group get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? They're too happy to be rock.

    K.... P....

Because they were a high-selling accomplished pop-rock band from the 60s. Some songs have more folk influence than standard rock influence, but “too happy to be rock” isn’t a thing. Rock music can definitely be happy. That’s not a rule in rock music I ever heard of. Lol. And they are a rock band. It makes perfect sense that they are in. Run DMC, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, NWA, major influential Hip Hop acts are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, showing how diversely applied the “rock and roll” philosophy is (and I definitely think they belong here too).

    K.... P....

Perhaps those who influenced, impacted, etc, rock should have been in a seperate category than "performers".

  42. R.... ....

“Her lips taste like mint from toothpaste or gum, or sometimes like cherries or grapes from her lip gloss. She's soft when I hold her, with curves where my hands rest, and when I touch her I think stupid caveman things like, mine and totally mine—oh yeah, and all mine.”

  67. E.... P....

“You and me underneath a roof of tin”. Reminds me of more innocent days when I used to live in 'Tin Town' Taughmonagh, Belfast, from 1962 until 1970. Before the Troubles kicked off...

  68. M.... O....

John B Sebastian wrong some great songs and the Lovin' Spoonful were really really good. This ain't one a good example of either!

    S.... P....

    EVERYTHING WAS SO new!

    S.... P....

    @charles brown
the greatest year of my life too .... god I loved her !

    S.... P....

Great times but also perilous times with the war going on and knowing once out of H.S. we'd had a good chance being drafted to go fight seeing 200 American young men killed each month. I tip my hat to all those brave souls who did I truly do but I'm also very thankful I never had to go and prove myself too. All of us growing up back then know someone who went to Viet Nam and never came back. May they RIP

  71. N.... S....

Good songs last forever.  This is one of them.  It brings with it great memories.  I would sing it to my children, and I still sing it in the car.  It's an automatic pilot that permeated me, so the singing can't be helped.  Thank you John, for bringing such joy that lasts a lifetime.

  72. B.... S....

A wonderful, beautiful song - it makes your heart feel good again.

    B.... S....

  74. P.... B....

    Still crap

    P.... B....

So, Paul, other than your churlish opinion, what else do you have to offer? "A cynic is someone who would rather bite his own finger than point at the moon." Yeah, I know all about Bill of Rights thing and all that happy horseshit, but consider that maybe the only crap here is your comment on a song.

On this day in 1966 {October 9th} "Rain on the Roof" by the Lovin' Spoonful entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #76; and five weeks later on October 13th, 1966 it peaked at #10 {for 1 week} and spent 10 weeks on the Top 100...
It reached #12 on the Canadian RPM 100 Singles chart...
Was the quartet's sixth of seven straight records to make the Top 10; started with "Do You Believe in Magic" {#9}, "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice" {#10}, "Daydream" {#2 for 2 weeks}, "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?" {#2 for 2 weeks}, "Summer in the City" {#1 for 3 weeks}, this one, and finally "Nashville Cats" {#8}...
Sadly, lead guitarist 'Zal' Yanovsky passed away on December 13th, 2002 at the young age of 57...
    May he R.I.P.

I followed them from their days in Greenwich Village. Zollie was always a very personable man and a true fan of his fans. Kinda wish they just stayed as "Our Guys", but, life goes on

    s.... ....

@αg.elephant Me too.  I read the Mama Cass biography recently and she brought these guys together.  "Zal" came across as a fun, kind guy.  They all had fun, for sure and its a great summer sound.  Like you say, life goes on but its hard.

    M.... ....

Nope. If I recall, Nashville Cats was the B side of Summer In The City.

    M.... ....

@MIKECNW was a hit single on it's own

    Sandy Monster brought me here..

  92. u.... m....

For my money this is one of the best love songs ever; if not the best. The whole song is just one simple, pretty image. John Sebastian had a way with words and his voice is perfect for this. Actually his voice is perfect for any song - unique and immediately recognisable.

  93. B.... S....

Their songs were one-of-a-kind gems, a very talented group. They knew how to create great enduring melodies which is pretty difficult (unless you're blessed).

  94. j.... s....

what a beautiful song ! I remember buying it as a schoolgirl -"Daydream" was on the other side but I played this much more often -always loved John Sebastian, master of the feelgood songs-way to go John, you always make me feel good ! -odonna17

  95. Y.... C....

¡¡¿ rain finally, what song comes to mind?[66101]

  96. c.... b....

One of my absolute favorites!!! I listen to jazz, classical, old country, bluegrass....this is at or near the very top! I like classic rock as well.

  97. J.... M....

Every time it rains, this song echoes though my memories, and I often start singing it (at least the first verse) to my husband, or whoever is with me. I used to sing it to my children, too. It reminds me of all the happy times I sat in my teen years looking out the window, or out an open door, at the gentle rain falling outside, or listened to the rain falling on the roof over me. It's such a positive little song with such a beautiful melody. Still lives happily in my head, at age 59.

  98. b.... ....

great great tune by the ls.

  99. s.... ....

JUST MADE IT... In 1966 "Rain On The Roof'" peaked at No. 10 thus just making the Billboard's Top 10 and it spent a total of 10 weeks in the Top 100...

"Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind" {#2}, "Summer In The City" {#1}, this one, and finally "Nashville Cats" {#8}..
