Lovin' Spoonful, The - On The Road Again Lyrics

I woke up this mornin', looked around my four walls
And a dream told me you ain't happy at all
I packed up my bags, I took my last look and then
Look out, pretty mom, I'm on the road again

I'm on the road again
(Just as sure as you're born)
I'm on the road again
(Just as sure as you're born)
Look out, pretty mom, I'm on the road again

I ran home last night to get my dinner hot
I pulled on my door and found the door was locked
I jumped through the window and believe it or not
She had not even put my dinner in the pot

I've never been evil and I've never been sly
But if I sit some place and let the time roll by
I start to get restless, pack my bags up and then
Look out pretty mom, I'm on the road again

Heard it on Kexp just the other night, totally sure this would be from the 70s, 80s or even much later.

So these guys, even in playing old time music, were pretty early in doing what they did

(Yup, talking to you, Blazers, Black Crowes, Thunderbirds...)

At one point we did this song in our little middle school garage band of the late 60's early 70's. I thought the song was great but this recording was kind of loose and messy, and yeh, it could have been longer with a couple of solo's between verses. Maybe they were just filling in the album in a hurry. But it is an excellent song.

Always thought this was an excellent song. It could have been turned into a longer jam, for sure.

    R.... S....

Yes, Roger, I always thought it was too short, and longed for an extended solo!

    I Love dat Spoonful!"

  11. G.... ....

It's a song written by John Sebastian. The Dead recorded it years later. If they threw in some new lyrics, so be it.

  12. c.... m....

not true, the grateful dead also recorded this but with slightly different lyrics as well.

  13. G.... ....

Great cut from a grievously under-appreciated group

  14. b.... ....

My favorite Spoonful tune. It's so different than everything else I've ever heard from them. I first saw Zal singing this with the group on TV as a kid, and I thought it was riot. Really a fun song!

  15. D.... T....

Yes, originally by Memphis Jug Band, adapted by the Spoonful. John Sebastian's previous band the Even Dozen Jug Band also did a version, closer to the original but also with some lyrical alterations. The guitar figure is the same in all versions, as is the chorus.

  16. G.... ....

This "On the Road Again" is a John Sebastian original. The line, "I've never been evil I've never been sly" is a dead giveaway.

  17. J.... F....
