Lovin' Spoonful, The - Darling Be Home Soon Lyrics

Come and talk of all the things we did today
Here and laugh about our funny little ways
While we have a few minutes to breathe
And I know that it's time you must leave

But darling be home soon
I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled
My darling be home soon
It's not just these few hours but I've been waiting since I toddled
For the great relief of having you to talk to

And now, a quarter of my life is almost passed
I think I've come to see myself at last
And I see that the time spent confused
Was the time that I spent without you
And I feel myself in gloom

So darling be home soon
I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled
My darling be home soon
It's not just these few hours but I've been waiting since I toddled
For the great relief of having you to talk to

So darling...
My darling be home soon
I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled
My darling be home soon
It's not just these few hours but I've been waiting since I toddled
For the great relief of having you to talk to

Go and beat your crazy head against the sky
Try and see beyond the houses and your eyes
It's OK to shoot the moon

Darling be home soon
I couldn't bear to wait an extra minute if you dawdled
My darling be home soon
It's not just these few hours but I've been waiting since I toddled
For the great relief of having you to talk to

I remember hearing this song & feeling such an emotional rush. I can still remember that intensity a half century later. I love the way it builds with increased orchestration. What a great song !

  2. M.... D....

This is a beautiful...beautiful love song. It grows on you the more you hear it. Saw them at CCHS in Lawrence MA in 1967...AWESOME !!!!!!!!!

  3. N.... ....

This is exactly how I feel about my wife - and we've been married 38 years.

  4. K.... M....

A beautiful song and probably the only song that uses dawdled and toddled in any song in recorded history. The song, as a whole, expresses my feelings exactly.

  5. t.... ....

This song is so pretty .. but with the orchestra it becomes beautiful-

  6. J.... C....

the wrecking crew at its finest!

  7. G.... H....

His voice is perfect on this song...

  8. P.... S....

This song encapsulates the 60s music

  9. C.... W....

TTB brought me here. But this is wonderful.

  10. M.... G....

One of the most underrated songs of that era or any era , Spoonful was deep

  11. W.... G....

One of my all time favourites, even with those terrible strings and brass. Still, that's the 60's for you. Maybe the record company insisted on them. The band almost certainly resisted.

    W.... G....

Wow! Disagree completely. I think the strings are incredible on this. Strings are often overused but I think it enhances this song.

    W.... G....

@westy40 On reflection I agree with you. The track would have been a bit sparse without orchestration. I still find the brass a bit harsh though.

  12. W.... O....

A Wikipedia reference brought me here.

  13. J.... G....

The greatest memories of life as a little kid,, watchin my Mom Rocking to all of the best as one of them being this song... This was a huge Fav. these are the memories that never will be forgotten.. May you RIP,, here in Nov. 2019

  19. M.... A....

I’m thinking bag pipes for some reason

  20. W.... ....

That bit where the horns come in. Every time. Every fucking time.

  21. C.... S....

This created such a yearning in me way back when I first heard this. It's still hauntingly beautiful to me after all these years.

  22. p.... ....

Love this and Summer in the City.

  23. T.... M....

In the early 1960s I used to work for my grandfather every Christmas, Easter, and summer vacations at his slaughterhouse. Bu the time I was 16 (1967) I was able to buy my own car, or actually a yellow 1962 Ford pickup truck! I was living at Newport Beach, Ca.

Good God that was a good time. A couple of my buddies and I made a cheap camper out of 2 sheets of 4X8 plywood and a piece of canvas for a back cover. One of these guys gave me a cowboy. Hanging out at the Newport pier some friends began to call me cowboy. Gas was dirt cheap and auto insurance was not required. We were out for fun and found it in abundance! Recent history confirms that we had the best music ever!!!

    T.... M....

    Thomas Manning

  24. T.... D....

The band, however, wasn't the same after Zal Yanovsky left in '67 following his drug bust. They made one album without him, featuring Jerry Yester as new lead guitarist, and it wasn't as good as anything they did with Zal. One year later, John Sebastian left to pursue a solo career and the band carried on without him by doing one last album and it wasn't very good at all. For me, the soundtrack to the movie You're a Big Boy Now was my cut-off for Lovin' Spoonful albums to listen. It's all about personal preference, I was just saying they ran their course after Zal's departure, that's all.

  27. G.... E....

One of the great love songs of all time.

  28. j.... l....

One of the most beautiful songs of all time. These guys were a great band.🤗👍✌

  29. B.... B....

    SUBLIME

  30. e.... ....

Nothing said more than the music of the hippie generation. Love your fellow brother and pick up a little garbage on your way out and everything will be alright

  31. c.... f....

    GREAT GREAT BAND.....LOVE THEM ;-)<3

  32. B.... M....

Sung from the heart for sure. The orchestra adds so much too...

  33. W.... ....

Damn! I Love This Song. For All Of Those Who Await Their Love...When The Minutes Of Waiting Seem Like Hours...The Seconds An Eternity...We Wait, And Wait For Them. More's The Pity That We're So Prideful And Grateful That They'll Never Know...Purely Timeless.

  34. J.... P....

    Our wedding song ❤️❤️❤️❤️

  35. C.... B....

My husband sang this to me when we're newlyweds. I'd be out and call him.and he'd miss me.

  36. B.... B....

    Not digging this.

    B.... B....

then WTF are you doing here ..hateful evil .millennial?

  37. K.... P....

    I’ve been waiting.....
For the great relief of having you to talk to.
Great lyric and one of my favorite songs by an iconic ‘60’s artist.

    K.... P....

I love John and his harpsicord;)

    K.... P....

Nancy Hanley I think that’s actually a autoharp.

  38. c.... ....

I still don't understand what "waiting since I toddled" means

    c.... ....

Look up the meaning for the word "toddled"

    c.... ....

It's not only he's been waiting for these few hours....Toddling is the first steps a baby takes when trying to walk...so his whole life. Get it? Pretty romantic if you ask me.

    c.... ....

I believe the word is dawdle

    c.... ....

@Ted Colvin That's a different line; he rhymes dawdle with toddle in the next line

  39. A.... G....

    💕 love it

  40. M.... R....

    The sweetest band ever <3

  41. P.... ....

I first heard this song a couple of years ago and I always thought it was Kenny Rogers and the First Edition doing this. So heard it recently on a online radio station and lo and behold it said The Loving Spoonful! I was shocked because I had no idea these guys did music like that. Beautiful song, props to this group.

    P.... ....

you really need to go back and listen to the music of this era.... there has been nothing like it since...

  42. F.... A....

    Grande música.

  43. j.... L....

O perhaps today¶=~this life...and tomorrow represents that next life...and yesterday might be that green tambourine left on the cutting room floor...where last chance dreams go to die...alone like Donnie darkos cat...under that porch of our yesteryears

  44. D.... k....

One of the absolute greatest song's to come out of the 1960's.

Rhyming 'dawdled' with 'toddled'. Nobody but Sebastian

    P.... D....

    D.... ....

    Awesome Doug!

    D.... ....

    My husband was there too!

  57. T.... M....

I remember watching a John Sebastian interview on TV some years ago, and he admitted that his band "wasn't that good, but we really enjoyed what we were doing".The hits they put out between '65-67, all of them are so good! It was the draft that caused the breakup of the band. Sebastian's last claim to fame was the 'Welcome Back Kotter" tv show theme.

  58. g.... ....

Gawd this is good. Still beautiful after all these years.

    g.... ....

I agree. This is one of their best performances.

  59. G.... M....

Learn the simple things, Yoga, breathing, Magical Passes and meditation. Use that perspective to understand your talents and express them. Act sustainably with kindness.

    D.... H....

@thehauntedstream a lifetime is not measured by the time we are born to the time we die. A lifetime could be a simple "hello". Understand that and don't waste your time on things that don't matter. Subjective, selective. Learn from your mistakes and definitely from the mistakes you see others make. Be kind

    D.... H....

Chris Bacher & Gammadian thanks for your fruitful advice guys. I’ll never forget it.

This is on the same level of John Lennon's 'Hide Your Love Away'....a truly heartfelt paean of a young man to a girl he cherishes so deeply and so wants to have in his arms again. This is the classic song of the Loving Spoonful; and John Sebastian....a masterpiece esp. that backing orchestra of strings and brass but most of all the 'strings'....always always the strings!

    R.... T....

This ranks significantly higher in my opinion, always reminds me of heading over the bridge from Manteo to Nags Head late one Sunday afternoon 20 years go.

    R.... T....

i've always sensed that this is harder to sing than it appears

    R.... T....

Some people don't like the orchestration in what they consider to be rock music but I'm a great fan of tasteful introduction of orchestral instruments into pop if well done. And speaking of great production values in a song, have you ever heard the song ,The Year of the Cat by Al Stewart? If that song had not been so lovingly produced (but not overproducedl) it wouldn't have been nearly as big a hit in my opinion( thanks to Alan Parsons). Without Alan Parsons Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon would have been just another heavy metal Rock album. It's the only album by Pink Floyd that I ever liked every song on.
KASHMIR by Led Zepplin, another tastefully orchestrated heavy metal band opus. It would never have had the trance-like quality without the strings and horns etcetera. A masterpiece of Rock. ELO, the song "Can't get it out of my head". On and on; got to stop somewhere.

    R.... T....

It's A Missive About The Pain And Beauty Of The Waitng For That Person...The Other Half Of Yourself That You Can't Truly Sing Without.

    R.... T....

    For me, it's the horns.

  71. S.... ....

Love this song. One of my favorites

    S.... ....

Simply a beautiful song. It never gets old. The Spoons were great.

    S.... ....

Peter Paul n Mary did it before the Spoonful and was written by a Scottish friend of Pete Seagers for his wife. I agree that the Spoonful do the best version

  72. T.... B....

The vocals are all in one ear! Don't listen on headphones!

    T.... B....

No dude, totally listen on headphones, this is how they wanted you to hear it. Love the old separation of sound of this era.

    T.... B....

Its an old recording. Same with my Klipschorn speakers.

    T.... B....

It was recorded that way. The instruments are in the other channel...unless you find a mono version.

  73. T.... B....

Wonderful instrumental for its time... truly great melody .........It’s ok to shoot for the moon.......A truly great band

    T.... B....

TROTPTKA BASNBI...instrumental? Maybe you are thinking of the word ballad? Because an instrumental has just that...instruments, no words. Just an FYI for you.
