Loveless, Patty - The Grandpa That I Know Lyrics

Brand new shoes they hurt my feet
This lace collars chokin me
Cuttin off my air supply
When I hang my head to cry
When I hang my head to cry

I see tears on daddy's face
Someone humming
Amazin grace
Rain beats on this grave side tent

Preacher said he did repent
Preacher said he did repent
They've got him playin there in pinstreipes how they get him in that suit
I guess the lord will recognize him without overalls and mule

They all say he looks so natural
All I see is a cold dark hole
I wont commit this day to memory
That ain't the grandpa that I know

That ain't the grandpa that I know
(Sad fiddle)
Tractor never pulled his plow
He walked and cussed
And love that ground
His hand sowed each and every seed
He'd pray for rain and fight the weeds he pray for rain and fight the weeds
He said the simple life just suits me fine never dreamed the county line
Grandma was his boyhood bride
He'll be there in her arms tonight
Hell sleep there in her tonight ..
They've got him playin there in pinstreipes how they get him in that suit
I guess the lord will recognize him without overalls and mule
They all say he looks so natural
All I see is a cold dark hole
I wont commit this day to memory
That ain't the grandpa that I know

That ain't the grandpa that I know
(Sad fiddle)
They played a preety organ number swore it was it favorite tune
But I know he preferd a fiddle playing carol
County blues
They all say he look so natural
All I see is a cold dark hole
I wont commit this day to memory
That ain't the grandpa that I know
That ain't the grandpa that I know

This one got me straight in the heart. My Papaw was/is and always will be so incredibly special to me. Like Homer, he was just a good old country boy, head to toe, inside and out; his life was getting his hands into that dirt, planting those seeds and working all day in the hot sun, fighting the weather and the weeds just like Patty sang. What resulted from his labor was the best food you could ever put in your mouth. I grew up on those homegrown vegetables and I wish that I could have just one bite of them today. By the grace of God, we lived right next door to my grandparents and I spent many a day in that field along side both of them, planting, hoeing, pulling weeds, then at harvest time I was right there with them, picking those delicious vegetables. I treasure the memories of sitting on that screened in porch; a rocking chair for everybody; me, my Mamaw, and my Aunt Molly (Mamaw's oldest sister who lived with them, in her 80's , & was the sweetest person I have ever known) all of us with a great big "wash pan" in our lap and huge tubs of vegetables covering the porch.Papaw took the brunt of the picking, starting at about 6:00 a.m, and before long he'd have the porch lined up with those tubs and Mamaw, Aunt Molly and I would fill our wash pans and spend the day rocking and shelling peas, butter beans, shucking corn, cutting up squash, okra, washing cucumbers & tomatoes, throwing out any bad ones as we went along. In the fall it was turnip and mustard greens, and my favorite, collard greens! Afterwards, I'd follow Mamaw & Aunt Molly to the kitchen where we'd spend the rest of the day "putting up" the fruits of our labor. Washing, chopping, cutting the corn off the cobb, looking through those big old pans of peas & beans for any that were "stung up" (meaning a bug had bitten into them) throwing them out, while my Mamaw would get started on the stove with the blanching process. They'd be set aside to cool and then Aunt Molly and I would sit and bag them up, getting them ready for the freezer. We'd always make a count of how many bags we had; sort of a little victory lap for our hard work. We'd rejoice when our work was done as we feasted on our supper that Mamaw would fix featuring those fabulous fresh delights, piping hot cornbread and of course, all the sweet tea we could drink. Oh, what beautiful memories. If you haven't guessed by now, I'm a southern girl, born & bred, and the truth is, I never HAD to do any of the things that I'm speaking of; I was just a little girl, but I chose to be there with them. It was my safe place; I knew I was always loved & welcomed & cherished there. You can read between the lines for what else that says. When I get to Heaven, after Jesus of course, they are the first people I want to see. So I understand that experience of being there at his funeral and feeling like "all this is not him"; he was work clothes, his favorite hat, hard work, sweat, and the Grand Ole Opry. That's the man in my heart, and that's the memory I choose. He died when I was just 18, but the love & wisdom he gave to me are at the core of who I am today at age 54. I know that I've written a long comment here; but somehow, it just wouldn't feel right to confine all I feel about him to a few sentences. He was so much more, he was the biggest influence of my life. I miss him today as much as I ever have. I love you Papaw!!!
