Lou Reed - New York Telephone Conversation Lyrics

I was sleeping, gently napping
when I heard the phone
Who is on the other end talking
am I even home

Did you see what she did to him
did you hear what they said
Just a New York conversation
rattling in my head

Oh, oh, my, and what shall we wear
Oh, oh, my, and who really cares

Just a New York conversation
gossip all of the time
Did you hear who did what to whom
happens all the time

Who has touched and who has dabbled
here in the city of shows
Openings, closings, bad repartee
everybody knows

Oh, how sad and why do we call
Oh, I'm glad to hear from you all

I am calling, yes I am calling
just to speak to you
For I know this night will kill me
if I can't be with you

If I can't be with you

  14. M.... G....

    J'adore cette chanson !

  15. A.... B....

How poignant that the chorus has backing vocals from David bowie

    A.... B....

Think bowie produced this and was on a few tracks backing vocals

    A.... B....

@Ian Clarke yes you're correct David Bowie did produce Transformer

    A.... B....

He also does the backing vocals for Satellite of Love.

  16. A.... B....

    What a lovely little ditty!

  17. M.... ....

If Lou was recording Transformer today, this song would be called "New York Twitter Conversation".

  33. n.... ....

Its not a joke. its a new york conversation. its a fun song, not a joke. dont ever say that to lou reed, he would get really offended lol

  34. H.... S....

i used to listen this song when i was a child to get asleep

  35. n.... ....

    Exactly.

  36. A.... M....

    David Bowie on backing vocals

    A.... M....

Imagínese en una cárcel notcoreana y no parar.

  37. 3.... m....

I feel like this is a joke song :P Good though

  38. J.... J....

    Berlin. This too.

    J.... J....

    Jarno Järveläinen
    No.

  39. F.... J....

    guuuSSSsssS

  40. F.... J....

    marius

  41. T.... ....

    FRAAAAAAAAAAN

  42. e.... p....

anybody who doesn't like this song has rocks in their head!

  43. j.... ....

This is the musical equivalent of Jacqueline Susann and friends 'doing lunch'! Sheer genius!

  44. S.... ....

@HereForBarbara Yep! That is indeed the Thin White EMPEROR (higher than a duke or even a king)

  45. A.... H....

A great little funny duet between reed and bowie

  46. W.... ....

    definetly his best album

  47. B.... H....

I bought Berlin on the back of this album and when I heard the baby cryin it upset me and I have not played it since

    B.... H....

They're diametric opposites. This is a fun, poppy, campy album. Berlin is an emotional train wreck, but with some great moments.

  48. W.... ....

this song kinda reminds me of bike from the pink floyd album relics

  49. v.... ....

@Shermanicus : It never is. If there would be a measurable scale of genius, I would be one myself.

  50. B.... M....

@vulvasonic yeah but that's not an objective or generalised measure of genius

  51. v.... ....

@Shermanicus : It is genius in the world of showbusiness. :-)

  52. B.... M....

@vulvasonic i hate it when people so liberally use the term 'genius' to describe people in showbusiness...this is not 'genius'

    B.... M....

Sometimes genius is an over used tag . This track is like a nursery rhyme on the album the censors ran away from sticking their fingers in their ears shouting no no no . Mary Whitehouse and the savile defending BBC would of banned it if it was a single . Gobshites

  53. K.... ....

"oooooow my, and what should we wear'HAHAHAH AWSOME

  54. v.... ....

Lou Reed has a great sense of humor. Transformer is as genius as it is humoristic.

  55. J.... ....

    it's david bowie

  56. H.... ....

i admit lou reed is a genius but this shit is pathetic, this sounds like somethin out seseme street, any wannabe children music writer could have come up with this

    H.... ....

Definitely not, the chord progression, harmony and melody, are brilliant

    H.... ....

You don't know as much as you think,Henry.

    H.... ....

Lou (along with VU) is considered to be potentially the biggest influence in the creation of punk, and what’s punk without some humour? Honestly I think it’s nice to have something more lighthearted in a record that serves as a display of genius creativity. The better you pull off styles outside of your own, the more fluent you are as an artist.

  57. J.... P....

I'd like to think that is Maureen Tucker on backup vocals. But I'm probably wrong in that.

    J.... P....

    It’s David Bowie

  58. N.... S....

    He is the best!! :))

  59. a.... ....

Correct. Bowie backed alot of Transformer tracks. He produced it between making Ziggy and Aladdin Sane.

    a.... ....

arabiansanchez mick Ronson produced it..Bowie was there but he handed it over mainly to Ronson..Bowie’s main contribution was vocals. The genius of this album and its success is a result mainly of the fairly unknown contribution of the Mick Ronson

  60. t.... ....

i love lou reed. he is sexy in a sort of strung out kind of way.

  61. V.... ....

    yes, agreed.

  62. C.... D....

Been a trip since day 1 that I heard it,, about '78 or so.. insanity!!!

  63. M.... S....

damn if it happens every night!

  64. Y.... R....

who is on the other end talking?

  65. A.... ....

To all the You Tube Drama/guilds drama, they should listen to that song more often!
