@dayum son Be careful what you mean by fun. Castaway was a good movie, sure, but All Is Lost has a real human element to it, largely because of the lack of dialogue tbh. Makes the audience have to read his face, and the camera shots have to be more creative. I like this movie as much if not better than castaway honestly

Newman always acted in movies that got attention because they were meant for the mainstream audience that hadn't even heard of different types of movies like this. He would have been horrible in this, imagine having to spent weeks in sea filming whilst being an older man. People like Russell Crowe or Redford had actual feeling and acting in their movies. They are the real professionals. Newman just got lucky he had his career in a time that real acting hadn't developed.

This is one motion picture which I certainly hope you make time for on your viewing schedule.  Robert Redford offers us his fans a magnificent performance and virtually a solo one at that.  How many actors do you know that can pull off carrying the entire story?  Yet he does it in a calm collective and logical manner.  There's a mystery to discover here as well, a treasure lost within the sea of the timeline.  I found it by bribing a clam named Beck at the bottom of the ocean.  Beck a Siren told me that written on a secret scroll were the words "Liny podnoszące", and that these words would help me understand the assembly of Be and Ad.  The proverbial bead that an orb is!  Way to go Robert you and your staff are most certainly bright.

Worst survival movie ive ever watched.

Just started on UK tv 10 mins ago, I can't bear to watch it again and I'm addicted to sailing movies. This film is SO bad, FULL of total crap right from the first few minutes! Redford must have been desperate for a job to take this one on and as for whose bright idea it was in the first place, well, they certainly didn't have a clue about sailing!

Its fear mongering by Hollyweird and their handlers to scare people out of a life of seeing the world and living outside of being the usual citizen slave.

People who like this movie are obviously brainless. The main character is a joke. Nothing realistic in it... First he wakes up so, soooo, sooo slowly when he realizes the boat is full of water. Then he does a couple of stupid things to fix the problem and then a storm comes. He gets out of the boat, always vetry slowly, without even closing the door that will prevent the water from going inside... When he's outside he falls something like 2 times in the water in a very dumb way (without being more careful afterwards) and he forgets to put his harness which makes him almost die from drowning. Then he falls in a small coma because he banged his head somewhere (very funny by the way). But because he didn't close the door, when the boat goes upside down, all the water comes in, and the boat of course sinks hahahahaha. Then, he gets the great idea to go on the flatable boat. Then he uses his little firework DURING THE DAY as a commercial boats passes by in order to be rescued... but he doesn't shoot it in the air (you ll understand if you saw the movie) and he shouts in the same time, when of course no one can hear. again, "lol". Then the night comes, and the best is for the end. A commercial boat passes by, he wakes up verrrry slowly, he uses his little fireworks, and when the boat is already gone quite fare away he lights up his own boat accidentally in order to be seen by the cargo boat!! Again, I don't know whether I should "lol" or cry. And then for some strange reasons he kind of sinks himself in the water until somebody rescues him. Okay, to sum it up, if you put Paris Hilton in the same situation, she'll do far, far better than that, trust me. The whole movie I just hoped he would just die in a second. The only good thing in this movie is that Redford succeeds in keeping his non changing tough survival expression, because he is old. But everything he does is a nonsense.

@EzPz No i think its laziness on the part of the writer/director to know more about the subject, because you can still bring truth into a film and keep it entertaining. And It seems to me the easy route was taken when progressing through each act. Just one clear example and its already been pointed out, for the boat to go down he bumps his head and gets knocked out. Its too predictable and very amateur don't you think?

Generally speaking, I think this movie was enjoyable considering it only has a single actor and almost no spoken words. It also reminds me of a survival game called Stranded Deep.

No point in watching the movie now I've seen the trailer....

I was surprized to see Redford starring in such a weak movie. All the way through it, I was expecting some amazing twist that woukd redeem the film and give it some point, but alas, it was not to be. So it is what it is: a documentary-style portrayal of an amaterish, ill-pepared sailor who takes to the high seas and get's what he probably deserves. Big deal...

Seems a lot of hate for the 'unrealism' in the film, but then there would be no film right. Soundtrack was breathtaking and captured the feeling of being alone, helpless in the middle of the ocean. great film

its just a frustrating movie to watch ... my 2 major gripes is 1. 100% those 2 flares that he shot at night time would of been seen by someone ... and 2. you can fill the indian ocean will 1 million shipping containers and the chances of his boat hitting one would be in the billions ,, so the fact he collided with 1 out of 1 is mind boggling the chances of that happening is beyond trillions

- firstly u just don't go for a lone trip in the middle of the ocean at 70yo.
- U can realize his boat could be saved more than once but he did absolutely nothing to save it and let it sink like an idiot.. maybe for the story plot.
- in more than one scene with the storm u can see the boat with a small window opened behind him and the water not entering at all. When the boat turned upside down for a while the entrance was completely opened and he managed to roll it back no water entered inside.
- not 1 but 2 cargo ships pass by literally next to him and none saw him which is ridicolous.
- his cringy attitude for the whole movie was like: ''oh well... let it happen.''
- even if the movie was without dialogs to enhance the sense of loliness they could have added way more self dialogs like they did with the castaway which would have enriched a lot the movie.

Too bad cause the plot and the idea were very nice.
Side note: many ppl say omg at the actor performance but personally i didn't see anything special nor specially expressive.
