Loretta Lynn - Big Sister Little Sister Lyrics

(Give up to the baby that's what they'd always say)
And big sister would let her path away
We shared a sandbox little sister and me I was her big sister and she was only three
Give up to the baby that's what they'd always say
And big sister would let her path away
All through our childhood and our high school days
My little sister always had to have her way
Now I can't hurt the baby and I can't let him go
Be brave big sister this time and say no
Now all that I remember as they drove out of sight
Just married and her holdin' the ones I love so tight
Now all I do is rock my darling I just can't let her cry
So rock a bye baby rock a bye
Give up to the baby and I'd lose every time
Now they're saying big sister is losin' her mind

can someone please explain to me what this song is about? It makes no sense to me.

The big sister always gave in to her baby sister, from the sandbox to high school. Then it implies that big sister was in love with someone and baby sister got that man. She says "now I can't hurt the baby... and I can't let him go, be brave big sister this time and say no." But apparently she didn't say no because she says her baby sister married him and she watched them drive away. The last part says "now all I do is rock my dollie, I just can't let her cry (possibly because she was so programmed not to let the "baby" cry) and it implies that she actually went insane from loss and pain. Sad song...

I think that's the meaning... but it's just my interpretation. I could be wrong.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for replying! I listened to this song so many times trying to figure out what it was about and I never understood. What confused me was the part where she sings, "Now all that I remember as they drove out of sight, just married and her holding the one I love so tight". I thought she was talking about someone holding her sister... anyways, it all makes sense now. This might be a cool short movie idea.

This was written by Fancis Heighton, who still lives in Nashville Tn, She's been transcribing doctor's notes for an insurance company for thirty years from her little apartment. She says all that works is the top of her head and the tips of her fingers. Say a prayer for her, she's had a tough life but a golden heart.
