Loreena McKennitt - The Parting Glass Lyrics

Of all the money that here I spent, I spent it in good company
And of all the harm that here I've done, alas was done to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit, to memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass. Goodnight and joy be with you all.

Oh, if I had money enough to spend and leisure time to sit awhile
There's a fair young man in this town that sorely has my heart beguiled
His rosy cheeks and lovely lips, alone he has my heart in thrall
So fill to me the parting glass. Goodnight and joy be with you all.

Of all the comrades that here I've had, they're sorry for my going away,
And of all the sweethearts that here I had, they wish me one more day to stay,
But since it falls unto my lot that I should rise and you should not,
I will gently rise and softly call. Goodnight and joy be with you all.

Loreena McKennitt The Parting Glass Comments
  1. F.... B....

WHAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WHO ARE YOU? THIS VOICES OF ANGEL ;-) GOOD JOB THANK YOU DEAR ( MERCI )

  2. Z.... P....

Loreena is a goddess and an ancient muse for modern days. Sublime and superlative.

I first bought her mesmerising cd The Mask and Mirror in 1995, two day later I snapped up her two earlier cd's; Elemental and The Visit. A year later in 1996, I was lucky to see her in concert here in little ol' Adelaide, AUSTRALIA. Two years later in 1998 while visiting friends in California, we saw her in LA. Amazing, sublime and magical.

In these days of revolting, gimicky pop 'princesses' and I use that loosely, I thank you Loreena for all your exquisite and incredible body of work. You are truly a mega star. So lucky to be living during the time of Loreena McKennit and her talented crew. Please come and tour back down under to Adelaide, Australia...x

  3. V.... S....

    Beautiful

  4. N.... ....

Did she do the Ass Creed Rogue version you hear in Taverns?

  5. T.... _....

Have no idea how I stumbled across this song.... but sooo glad I did love her voice

As long thise song is,it  should be "So pour for me the parting gallon". No Irishman takes 5:13 to drink a glass of beer. Maybe it takes him that long to drink the beer and find the door to the outside world afterwards.

Love her music but thus one will not get a replay. Just dont care for this version. Doesnt soumf right withput that irish accent.

  11. j.... ....

This is one of my favorite artists and one of my favorite folk songs. I don't get what other commentors mean about the song being to slow. I just checked Sinead O connor version and as beautiful a voice she has and knowing this song often in sung inpubs at closing time so a faster and more jolly tempo seems to fit for me it doen not render justing to the lyrics and their meaning. It is about someone who has to leave and does not want to and reflects about his past and time spend and action and is nostalgic and so a slow and thoughtfull way of singing this words makes more sense to me And the angelic and strong voice of Loreena is imo perfect for this song...

  12. .... ....

    best version ever!!

  13. H.... H....

Alguien tiene la letra completa de la canción☺

  14. K.... M....

I quite like McKennitt but on this song she's trying too hard to be 'Clannad-mystical'. Cara Dillon's version is simpler and better.

  15. M.... g....

Check out Mairead Carlin. She's 28 from Ireland and sings really great. I have met Miss Carlin as she is currently in the vocal group Celtic Woman

  16. E.... B....

    I love this!!!!

  17. K.... B....

    is that psaltry or synthesizer?

  18. B.... F....

    this version sucks tbh

  19. E.... B....

    I love this song

  20. V.... ....

    Loreena never fail!

  21. P.... S....

Wind That Shakes the Barley. Great film.

  22. A.... A....

    Softly call...

  23. B.... T....

OMG ... I had no idea that you'd released such over-produced cruft.
Such a fine voice. Such a fine spirit. And heart. Such a fine woman.

Listen to Rick Wakeman. That's production.
Do it well or not at all.
That echo effect is ersatz ... see KraftWerk.

  24. S.... A....

her songs touch the soul.........such a powerful voice....completely amazing

  25. I.... M....

    oh my god!!!
    good, good .

  26. M.... D....

    this woman! dang!

  27. S.... ....

Not only do I love the fact that she's well known, but the fact that she's from my home town.

  28. M.... C....

I've been hooked on Loreena McKennitt since the first five seconds of playing The Mask and Mirror album for the first time. Do yourself a favor. Stop what you're doing and listen to Dark Night of the Soul ASAP!

    M.... C....

Same here. First songs I ever heard sung by Loreena have been published on Mask and Mirror album. It was like entering a whole new world of emotions and fantasy. My all time favorite song is The Lady of Shalott based on a poem by Tennyson: https://archive.org/stream/ladyofshalott01tenn?ref=ol#page/n5/mode/2up

  29. w.... j....

    Beatyfully

  30. M.... L....

How am I only finding this version now. Haig Yazdjian in The Greek Folk Instruments: Oudι - Ούτι - Oud brought me here

  31. j.... c....

    So beautiful

  32. V.... ....

    Brilliant !!!

  33. A.... S....

This is a beautiful tune, and even though it feels to me as if she is singing it too slow I understand that she was probably trying to capture the sadness of the song . . . I really like Cara Dillon's version although that one is sung from a masculine perspective and this one is for the ladies. For the parting glass itself, I would suggest hot cocoa :)

  34. M.... M....

A tad to New Age, and/or indulgent..  Listen to The High Kings version.

  35. s.... ....

Tears, there, I admired it. Noe, get on wit ye!

  36. E.... C....

A beautiful version, haunting slowly with emotion, many thanks for posting.

  37. I.... ....

I've always loved her. Strangely enough my fave song from her is "The Highwayman" idk y, considering the story it tells. There's just something about the way she sings it that gets me to listen to it over and over

    I.... ....

+IcyPrincess215 The Highwayman is probably her best song, it is brilliant, and the story it tells is one of love.

    I.... ....

+IcyPrincess215 The bonny swans made me fall in love with her music.

    I.... ....

    I love The Highwayman.
Since hearing Loreena, I've added it to my repertoire and love singing it too.

    I.... ....

    The Highway Man is wonderful!

    I.... ....

IcyPrincess215 The Highwayman is my favorite as well.

  38. J.... M....

Is it not a song of reminisance and regret? Hardly emotions of speed and glance over.i reckon she captures the mood beatifully

    J.... M....

As with all good music, the lyrics are open to interpretation. She did a beautiful rendition. However... traditionally it was sung at the end of a gathering (party) or friends. It is traditionally more of a farewell song than a song of reminiscence and regrets.

    J.... M....

Some people also consider it as being about someone dying (not merely leaving a gathering)... which makes her eerie setting all the more interesting as you stop wondering why it sounds so ghostly...

  39. L.... B....

Haunting stuff... thanks for posting! :-D

  40. K.... H....

I agree that her timing is a bit to slow, but I like this version better than other singers. Her voice is so haunting and enchanting, I feel as if I have been put into a trance.

  41. E.... B....

Like this version, even though I have listened to Liam Clancy & other's on this. She puts so much feeling into it

  42. c.... ....

This is a beautiful version...I also like "The Voice Squad" version very much...

  43. C.... G....

Loreena McKennitt has a lovely voice, and often makes a song mysterious and evocative, but sadly she's missed the boat with this one - her tempo is much, much too slow, and her style not melancholy but lachrimose. Pity.

    C.... G....

Not exactly. Take "lachrimose" as an increase of emotional, deliberately.

  44. S.... O....

Sorry - should have been spelled "e'er."

  45. S.... O....

I think the lyrics in the first two lines are off just a tad.  Instead of "here" (as in "here I spent," and "here I've done"), it should be "e're," a one syllable abbreviation of "ever."  Just sayin.

  46. A.... M....

Ed Sheeran's song Give Me Love and the ending of assassin's creed 4 brought me here.
I'm just loving this song right now.

(Horrible english, i know, sorry, i'm Brazillian)

    A.... M....

I honestly personally think this one is better (at least of female wersions).
(However, i am a realy, big fan of Celtic Woman, so no offense ment, just my personal opinion in this particular case (but i guess that wersion is actually more close to how it´s originally was ment to be sung), but i highly reccomend listen to all the sugested wersions from this comment line, i will do so.).

    (Sorry for my terrible English...)

    A.... M....

    tamo junto irmão!!!

    A.... M....

Ariel...I only wish that I was as adept at Portuguese as yours in English. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz7Zq2pyBxI

    A.... M....

    nothing wrong with your english.

    A.... M....

Your english is beautiful... Stsy strong brazil from your irish brother... Stay strong Brazil... We love you!

  47. S.... J....

I live this in  one and Ed Sheeran version they are both so talented like heaven in to the ears

  48. j.... ....

dont worry, theres some of us that are realy here, we aint goin anywere

  49. H.... L....

When the hell did I say I thought Loreena was the original composer? I am completely aware of the fact that this is a traditional song. Before you make another asinine reply to a comment, read it first. One more thing, Hippiemosquitoquatro never said they thought it was written by Loreena.

  50. D.... G....

@HippieMosquitoQuatro and whoever else thinks that Loreena Mckennitt is the origonal composer of The Parting Glass, and that it was only The Walking Dead that at this time has made it popular, it's a Irish/Scottish poem-turned-folk song from around 17th century, so before you go all out on defending Loreena and giving hate to The Walking Dead (which is a fucking good show), do some research. Fucking love history i do.

  51. C.... M....

Well the popularity of TV shows sadly out weights the popularity of good music. But dont fret, at least they are introduced to good music through a common medium such as TV.

  52. M.... D....

10 people misclicked like botton :D

  53. H.... L....

It took almost a year to get a positive reply to that comment. It's great to finally find a kindred spirit.

  54. t.... ....

it does; what this does to the heart and soul completely overshadows a ridiculous show.

  55. R.... ....

It's not so much old English as it is a poetic contraption, to assist flow. However you are correct in it meaning 'ever', so your meaning can happily stay the same ^_^.

  56. D.... S....

LIKE if you are here for The walking Dead XD

  57. S.... ....

A Serie. Running on Fox."The Walking Dead

  58. T.... ....

Good music did bring people here. They heard good music in a show and came here to hear more.

We should be happy that people are still exposed to things that they otherwise would not be.

  59. D.... S....

I love that the walking dead brought people here; just another way to spread the word about Loreena and her amazing voice and music :) I know I'd be grateful if I was introduced to Loreena by a show!

  60. z.... ....

There are many versions of this song/ some completely different to this/ is actually one of the best songs ever !

  61. K.... ....

Aside from getting a few lyrics wrong, good version.

  62. H.... L....

Me?! Crazy? No. Just no. Just no. Just no. Just no. Just no. Just no.

  63. N.... M....

Ridiculous? Really? Are you crazy....? No. Just no. Just no...... Just no.

  64. N.... M....

I like when Ed Sheeran sings this.

  65. K.... B....

Sometimes ridiculous shows have good music on them. One of the coolest parts of watching Miami Vice in the 1980s was the cool music that they used on the show. I heard some tunes, and bought some music, that I would have never even heard if it hadn't been for that show.

  66. H.... ....

she is just amazing, my dad and i love her songs, very calming and wonderful GAHH!!!

  67. T.... ....

Me too, and then I heard this song on Walking Dead, loved it, then had a major fan boy moment when I found out Loreena did a version. I love her take on these old songs, they're always really haunting.

  68. H.... T....

The love of so-called ridiculous shows exposes many people to music that they would otherwise never hear. I have discovered some of my favorite musicians through hearing them on a show that I watch. I think that's a good thing. One art form supporting another.

  69. H.... ....

    thank you, i will.

  70. D.... ....

    well done. Have a cookie.

  71. H.... ....

loved loreena before walking dead. :P

  72. J.... D....

I'm pretty sure that e'er is old english for, 'ever', and so if you read it again "Of all the money that 'ever' I spent, I spent it in good company, or to make it more modern; of all the money that I ever spent....

That's what I thought this meant, and if I was wrong, then this song has lost something for me. That one word can change a lot of the meaning.

  73. J.... D....

    wtf lol

  74. M.... S....

Loved her music before any of it became truly popular. :) Check out more of her songs. She is an amazing artist!

  75. S.... M....

Oh all the money that e'er I spent
I spent it in good company
And all the harm that e'er I've done

Alas, it was to none but me

So fill to me the parting glass

  79. V.... S....

Play RainyMood at the same time as the song! :O

  80. H.... G....

This song was sung by an irish radio station as my ex husband was being buried in Florida and my son sobbed all the time it played. It fills your heart and sould with memories. helen

  81. S.... L....

That depends on how you interpret it. In the drinking song version (which this clearly isn't), here could easily refer to the bar. In the swan song, taking it as meaning on earth gives it about the same meaning as e'er.

  82. K.... ....

    *knock knock*

  83. S.... R....

I got here via Celtic Woman. I agree that the substitution of "here" for "e'er" is unfortunate, but Loreena includes verses that David Downes dropped from the CW version.

  84. s.... ....

When I was little I heard this song all the time ( just the instrumental) But the song can be sung slow, or fast. when sung or played fast, it holds more true to how it was played back in the day(Since it was sung in taverns with a good draft in hand) lol but I enjoy the slow versions as well ^_^

  85. s.... s....

WALKING DEAD BROUGHT ME HERE :D<3

  86. J.... ....

    First line of lyrics:

Should be 'Oh, all the money that e'er I spent...' 'Here I spent' misses the meaning of the song.

  87. G.... L....

This song did NOT come from the TV Show the walking dead!
"The Parting Glass" is an Irish, Scottish and Newfoundland traditional song, often sung at the end of a gathering of friends.
The song is older than its 1770 appearance in broadside, as it was recorded in the Skene Manuscript, a collection of Scottish airs written at various dates between 1615 and 1635. It was known at least as early as 1605, written in a farewell letter, as a poem

  88. k.... r....

    Loreena

  89. k.... r....

Heather grow up how do you think people find music!?!?! They hear it from someone some where.

  90. H.... L....

Why can't the love of good music bring people here instead of some ridiculous show?

  91. s.... ....

Definitely a beautiful song, but I might like the Wailin' Jennys' version better.

  92. E.... P....

It could well have been written by an educated Irish or Scottish person. We did have those in the seventeenth century, despite what some may claim. It could additionally have been only later altered. But there is truth in the disparity between the diction of the average Celt and what are these lyrics. I want to put this song in my book (nineteenth century), so I mean to look very much at all the facts I can find.

  93. M.... H....

    lead me here xD

  94. E.... ....

    so beautiful

  95. s.... ....

I heard a part of it in the Walking Dead trailer, and it just stuck in my head. I kept singing that one part of the song the whole day and now i finally heard this beautyfull song!!!

  96. A.... T....

This song made me cry because of it's beauty <3 Love Scottish/ Irish music.

  97. T.... ....

    That's right that's why I'm listening this song! :D

  98. S.... ....

Oh, that`s the version I`ve been lookin` for :) great!!!
