Lord Huron - The Birds Are Singing At Night Lyrics

Through the dawning age
We go walking together
Toward the yawning grave
Burning days as we make our way
We'll leave our bones in the dust
An untold legend is lighting up

What if I was the last sight you ever saw,
Would you die with a smile on your face
Well don't even try to say you will,
Because you'd hardly recognize the sight
The young are getting old and the summer is cold,
All the birds have been singing at night

When we're dead and gone,
Will the mountains remember,
Or just carry on
Moving as slow as the forest grows
And turn our bones into dust,
An untold legend is lighting up

When will I reach that light that I'm running to,
When I die,
Will it turn out forever
There's a fire burning inside of me,
When I die,
Will I burn out forever

You don't need to lie, I know it will
Because the darkness doesn't need the light
All the young are getting old and the summer is cold,
And all the birds have been singing at night

Well, don't even try to save me, friend,
'Cause I know it ain't worth the fight.
All the young are getting old and the summer is cold,
And all the birds have been singing at night.

Lord Huron The Birds Are Singing At Night Comments
  1. Woolust

This song makes me imagine myself walking among a stone path near a river surrounded by a forest, it's dark but a galaxy lights the sky with fluorescent streaks of colours and they all reflect into the river.. The stars shine especially bright and as I walk along the path that seems isolated from humanity, I imagine small spirits dancing upon the water kicking small drops of it into the air that fall back down silently.. In that moment of imagination, it feels free and peaceful. I don't have a destination, just a journey.

Lord Huron's Music is an experience and definitely one of the best ones I've ever had.

  2. DC Artist

The fog has lift, now I can see~
Lord Huron music feels like that to me.

  3. Nathan D

The starting sounds eerily similar to She lit a fire and then I cant explain it. It just connects and I feel something is missing in my life.... LH is just that!

  4. Green Gazelle

Don't even try to save you? Don't tell me what to do. As a human dies, another is born, don't ignore half of life. The summers are getting warmer, the winters are getting warmer, when we die, our bodies get warmer as we decompose. There will always be heat and cold, don't ignore half of life.

  5. Nadia Iwanek

If my life was a movie Lord Huron, John frusciante, bon iver, Rhcp would be included in the soundtrack

Lord Huron's The night we met. I lived that song in real life. Loved someone earlier in my life for a long time but made a mistake and he lost me and I him. Now that I'm older I can see the whole picture. Now He's past away and now I have none of him but I remember the night we met. Beginning of June 1977 at a graduation party out be the lake. We were inseparable for 9 years then I left him. I regret it now sometimes but I've made peace w his ghost, now I am not haunted by his ghost. Miss you always, Michael.

  34. Madison Hodgson

Whenever i listen to Lord Huron its like im running through the mountains, surrounded by the ancient, timeless wilds of the earth. Idk. LH just makes me feel like i could wander off into the woods and watch the sunlight dapple the forest floor, or sparkle on water Ive never seen. I feel like this entire, beautiful, wonderful earth is my home, and how lucky i am to be able to just sit in the quiet of a sunbeam and hear the wind howling in the treetops overhead. How lucky am I to be able to experience life.

    Hana R

exactly. it’s so weird..I want to live in a the deep woods. I’m so glad I’m not the only one who can feel this when listening to these songs. I feel like we’re special people chosen to have this gift of feeling the earth around us and fantasies of being in nature when listening to these songs

is this about looking at the concept of life with bitterness? or is it about facing death with dignity?

  37. TheLastHylianTitan

Birds don't sing at night. But he hears birds singing at night. Is that a metaphor for him starting to sense and hallucinate the Other Side and that his death is near?

    SandyTheMaster

Watch the movie A Walk in the Woods! The soundtrack is done by Lord Huron (this song was made for the movie). I especially enjoy their use of ''Brother'' (which goes pretty well with the theme of the movie) and ''Ghost on the Shore'' (my favourite Lord Huron track).

    pappy hayes

@SandyTheMaster That movie is how I found this group and they rock. If you listen you will hear them in a car commercial Subaru ?I think. They have also been on late nite shows .

  47. James Kennedo

Literally dont know anyone else who likes these songs the way I do, but feel much more at home in the comments section :D

They make me want to run outside at 3am barefoot, bury my feet the soil, stare up at the stars and wander the Earth forever.

    BobStBubba

@Austin Myers -- Whoa, wait a minute: Is there really such a group?
Because I'm a-thinking Huron fans have to be the coolest people in the world. Okay -- found it, and it's on Fakebook. That is the cryingest of all possible shames. There's got to be another way to connect without feeding Zuckerberg's Monster.

    Austin Myers

BobStBubba I know!! They are the ONLY reason I keep Facebook. It’s worth it though! They’re the coolest people

James Kennedo I do, love this music

The first time I heard Lord Huron I was on a first date. We laid in the grass at midnight to watch a meteor shower. We listened to the first two albums on shuffle til 6am when the sun came up. I not only fell in love with her that night but Lord Huron as well!

  48. lemonadeserenade

When I heard the bird's chirping on the last part of the song, it matches exactly like the bird chirping sfx that Far Cry 5 use, they use the same bird chirping sound! xD

Their music and the way they match their voices to the music, gets these songs stuck in my head all day long!

  51. rebbekah cannons

All of Lord Huron's music has an eerie, nostalgic, beyond death and the afterlife feel to it. My words can't describe accurately but everyone who hears more that three of their songs can recognize it in each one and it is... amazin.

    TheBooneGuy

Agreed, the only reason I discovered Lord Huron was because I'm deeply fascinated by immortality, and one day while searching immortal stuff I came across these guys, so many songs about immortality it brought me right to them. Been my favourite band since.

    Sarra Maamri

i really understand what you feel i can't describe it too same feeling when i listen to ben howard or bon iver

    Melinda Jordan

I saw them live recently by happy random circumstance... so beautiful and heart filling. Greatful for the experience!

    Kristy P

Yes....I definitely feel the nostalgia..i can see flashes of my life when i listen to them..certain points of life during certain songs..which is weird and amazing. Only found them in adulthood...they have such a talent for pulling things from my soul. I went deep there but cant explain it any other way. The eeriness is definitely their instruments and arrangements the theremin is the best! . Love it all!

  52. Bea Fillier

Just love the music of Lord Huron...sound track from Walk in the Woods!

  53. Das_Edelweiss

My home is on a hill top or hilly area where I live and there's a huge fern tree right in front of my porch and it's on the sloped
side. I love this tree because it makes me feel like I'm in the woods as the sun light goes through little spaces of the tree. When I look out to the tree when it's dusk I play lord Huron in my head 😍😍😍😍

    AbsentWithoutLeaving

One of the first memories I have in my life is of laying in the grass under the big maple tree in front of our house in the hot summer, watching the sunlight filter down through the leaves. It was the best light in the world, all green and sparkly.

    hani

It's dusk when I read that, and I wish I had that view. It rained, and the skies are just cold grey.

I just saw this and it made me feel. I don’t know what, nostalgia? Sadness? Hope? I guess the best way to describe it’s “I feel”. It’s like missing something I’ve never lived, little bits of possible results and outcomes of current actions.

    Kerrick Sanker

"Saudade is a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never return."

That's why I love Lord Huron, it's like a reminescence of a long journey you once took...

    Icestorm Tundra

It really does. There's something about it that makes me feel whimsical and sad all at the same time. It makes me want to walk off into the trees and wander the world forever and sleep under the stars and listen to the rain.

Such an amazing song, wish they had have paid more attention to vocal EQ, not quite clear and powerful enough.

The music that you broadcast to that genre belongs in itself?
I am in love with this!

  59. Kyle P

Can't stop listening to this tune.

  60. Tim Boyls

Outside of the hope of the Gospel (for the foolish and broken) this song's lyrics perfectly express the crushing existential dread and meaninglessness of the human existence. We might well up with the exuberant whimsy that our lives are 'an untold legend lighting up' but this fleeting fantasy given flight by a burst of fading endorphins vanishes with the brutal angst of permanent death. When I die will I burn out forever? The nagging question that provided momentary false hope carries its own response: "You don't need to lie, I know it will Because the darkness doesn't need the light. Don't even try to save me friend Cause I know it ain't worth the fight. All the young are getting old and the summer is cold And all the birds have been singing at night"

    Hakajin

It's funny, because Lord Huron generally takes a more spiritual view. You can hear it in songs like "Frozen Pines" and "On the Wind." They certainly don't come across as religious, and they've definitely got an interest in the existence of darker forces... But I'd say that they're ultimately optimistic, because their albums so far are structred in a way that the songs about redemption come after the darker ones (like in the story told by "Meet Me in the Woods," "The Yawning Grave," and "Frozen Pines").

    TheLastHylianTitan

Nothing lasts. But should we be scared of that?

    I'm Ana

@TheLastHylianTitan I don't think so... It's our future, we just need to accept it. But, ask yourself, did you live? Did you change the world? Did you change someone's world?

    Tapestry of Sound

    - I think you be the foolish and broken - if the existential dread and meaninglessness of the human existence is so crushing - how can one well up with exuberant whimsy? That is the true question here.

    AbsentWithoutLeaving

Tim Boyls - Well, the short answer to the question is probably Yes. So be present in every single moment of your life. Every. Single. Moment.

I want to sit in front of the ocean and listen to good music with you

    Patricia Salvatore

@Brent Moury How immensely beautiful that must have been. I'm imagining it and feel overwhelmed, as if it would last forever. Perhaps such a moment might even heal all sorrows and reveal a greater joy beyond our mortal anguish.

    Brent Moury

@Patricia Salvatore It was incredible. Honestly I don't know how to describe it. I had been really stressed out and just sick of life, but then, on the beach, I realized that I had been stressed about the wrong things. It's not school or finding a job that we should be worried about, the only thing that matters is living. Feeling things, seeing places, meeting people. The only reason we should be worried is if we can't travel enough or do enough exciting things, because that's what matters, in my opinion!

    Patricia Salvatore

@Brent Moury You have a good outlook on life's possibilities. I'm old and for me it's mostly looking back. I did get to travel a little; my husband worked for Pan am and Delta. I've been to London a few times, traveled to Bath to visit my daughter ( she had a scholarship for one year at Oxford). Visited Stonehenge and the Avebury Plain. Only New Years Eve I spent out of my home was in Bath. Now, my fortunes changed long ago; my life turned to hard times when we got divorced. Long story and some fault belongs to each of us. I chose the unknown instead of safety after some unfortunate revelations. I might have stayed and would still travel, but the revelation was something I didn't think I could deal with. He still travels, more now than ever. I've had some experiences that were noteworthy but not in a good way and felt like I'd been dropped into a nightmare. I came out west to be near my son who had hitchhiked out west when he was 18. He made his way in life with music ( djembe drums were his incredible talent) and his very honest, caring, humble demeanor. Sadly, he was shot and killed at age 35, 8 yrs ago. A woman's selfishness and drama was what brought him to the unbelievable moment, when he saw a muzzle loading rifle pointed at him. It was horrible, this town loved Roland. I still love life, but i don't participate much. (I will confess that tears are beginning) I found Lord Huron recently and the music felt like the ocean's tides. I remember the last trip with Roland was to the Atlantic Ocean where we stood at the edge of the outgoing tide, so dark we couldn't see the waves crashing, but could only hear that sound. *** Now to you: I wish you wonderful travels and a marvelous life. Your reply made me consider what point im at on Life's map. Life hasn't been all somber for me. There were many adventures, silly moments, close calls, and hard work. I believe everyone's life is interesting, each one a drama, a comedy, an adventure, and perhaps a tragedy sometimes. I'd like to hear about what places you might want to see. The effect Lord Huron's music has on you inspired me to write back.

    Patricia Salvatore

@Brent Moury I forgot the most important thing! You see, i wrote my first reply because of your camping experience. My son Roland very, very often hiked and camped alone in the Gila Wilderness out here in New Mexico. He told me about a few humorous encounters he'd had with the unexpected along the trail. The description of your camping alone struck me hard. This was why I replied. Thank you for this gift.
