Loops, Jeremy - Basil Lyrics

And he knows it's gone
Don't wait for another
Fallin', he goes
And he cries all night
Slowly, he thinks
Can't wait for another
Tearin' in his soul
He screams inside

He says I'm only
And while I've gone away, only
Every single day, lonely
Well I can't be so strong, why don't you let me go?

I've been in weakness and I'm hungry
It's why I've gone away, only
Every single day, lonely
Well I can't run away, why don't you let me go?

Say, I, I know
I'm on, I'm on, I'm on, I'm on my way
To find my own
Hey, I, I know
I know I'm on, I'm on, I'm on my way
To find my own
Far away...

Well I will wait for, mm
Why don't you stick around
Wind your windows down
'Cause it's a hard place, in a hard town
Sometimes I pretend that I can't hear his words at all
But they echo in my sleep
And it doesn't help me keep
From feelin' like I could change something for him

And I cried, I said, I'm only
I'm one man here today, I'm only
It might never go your way, and only
Time will have its way, why don't you let me go?

He said I'm tired and I'm hungry
Every single day I'm lonely
My world is cruel today and only
If I could run away, why don't you let me go?

Say, I, I know
I'm on, I'm on, I'm on, I'm on my way
To find my own
Hey, I, I know
I know I'm on, I'm on, I'm on my way
To find my own
Far away...

I will wait for...

Say, I, I know
I'm on, I'm on, I'm on, I'm on my way
To find my own
Hey, I, I know
I know I'm on, I'm on, I'm on my way
To find my own

Say, I, I know
I'm on, I'm on, I'm on, I'm on my way
To find my own
Hey, I, I know
I know I'm on, I'm on, I'm on my way
To find my own
Far away...

I will wait for...

I read this interview and here's what JL had to say about this song:

CapeTownMagazine.com: What song of yours are you most connected to, and why?

JL: There are a couple of songs that come to mind, but there is one that I feel particularly connected to. The song is about Basil, a homeless guy I met during the World Cup in 2010. He told me all about his life, which was really devastating. He had four kids and a wife who still lived in Nyanga, which is in the Cape Flats. She left him because he couldn’t provide for the family anymore; he wasn’t earning any money, and so he was forced to leave, and another man came into the equation and started looking after his family while he became homeless.

So, he was telling me about how he misses his four children, and the story really affected me. So, I wrote a song about him, but I never played it live because it’s quite a sad song compared to my stuff, which is normally quite up-tempo, exciting and fun. The song doesn’t really have a name, but I call it Basil because the guy’s name was Basil. I don’t know if it’s ever going to be released, but I always play that song whenever I am practicing on my own.
