Loggins & Messina - Golden Ribbons Lyrics

Listen to the people crying
Hoping for the day they'll be free
I don't have to tell you they're dying
Just wake up, take a look, what do you see?

I see young men my own age in coffins
And mothers in tears for their sons
And sweethearts and wives alone with their memories
And golden ribbon's those fortunes of war

Thousands and thousands
Shall gather together
To seek and find the way we all need
And the son, we can bring him to glory
(Hallelujah)
And rid ourselves of the pain we all see

We see young men our own age in coffins
And mothers in tears for their sons
And sweethearts and wives alone with their memories
And golden ribbon's those fortunes of war

What does it avail a man
To gain fortune and lose his soul?

    What a great antiwar ballad

We did a pantomime in high school in the 70s with this song as the only dialogue. I have always loved this song and this duo. Thanks for posting.

I remember that war, only too well. It cost me many friends, for nothing. Somehow I survived. Whenever I hear this song, it brings tears to my eyes as I remember them, taken before they had a chance to really live. This is their anthem.

+Empress of the North Great song, great LP. I hadn't heard Golden Ribbons in decades and it really put me back in the mindset and gut-set of the day... I didn't know/realize that it's Stills' voice that begins the canon/round at the end of the song! But it sure is him!

+Philip Natale I'm pretty sure that's Larry Sims, the bass player. Compare it with the lead vocal on "Keep Me In Mind" from the Mother Lode album.

    E.... o....

he is credited according to Wikipedia....have listened to 'keep in mind' and it is close but I know stills voice anywhere....ciao4now x
