The cover is, without a doubt, better than the original. Simply more to the cover and is just right in all the right ways.

First of all, "rip off" is completely the wrong word to use considering they didn't steal anything. Second, they played it for David himself and he really enjoyed it. So eat it.

only a bad as crappy as local natives would rip off a song this great and totally destroy it with a boring monotonous cover, yup local natives is just a medicore band at best

I hear what you're saying. One can't help but compare the two, as they are the same songs. However, that's where people begin to lose appreciation of seeing/hearing something differently. The charm/genius David Byrne brought is not something that I feel should be mimicked in a cover. Then it would just seen the person covering it was trying too hard to recreate that feeling rather than show another side of the song. I usually don't love covers, but when they are done in another style, I can.

I respect it a lot because they managed to really transform the song and alter the mood. HOWEVER- I kind of feel like they sucked the fun out of it. The off-kilter zany charm of early Talking Heads is replaced by brooding Indie seriousness, knowhuddimean?

I don't know though, I'm old, so it's probably just the "old" talking.

I don't think they are trying to emulate him though. A cover is usually to show respect. I think everyone knows how brilliant David is. I really love the Talking Heads a lot, David has a pretty unique voice...but to me, it was nice to hear it done this way. I think Local Natives made this song flow unlike the original and the vocals aren't so David Byrne-esque. (Couldn't really think of anyone to compare him to. lol) I really do like the way this sounds over the original.

Is there actually a valid argument that this is better than the Talking Head's version? David Byrne is one of the most original characters in the history of music, not an easy guy to emulate at all. This isnt a bad background song but Local Natives could not even come close to portraying the state of mind Byrne was.
