Living Colour - Open Letter (To A Landlord) Lyrics

Now you can tear a building down
But you can't erase a memory
These houses may look all run down
But they have a value you can't see

This is my neighborhood
This is where I come from
I call this place my home
You call this place a slum
You wanna run the people out
This is what you're all about
Treat poor people just like trash
Turn around and make big cash

Now you can tear a building down
But you can't erase a memory
These houses may look all run down
But they have a value you can't see

Last month there was a fire
I saw seven children die
You sent flowers to their families
But your sympathy's a lie
'Cause every building that you burn
Is more blood money that you earn
We are forced to relocate
From the pain that you create

Now you can tear a building down
But you can't erase a memory
These houses may look all run down
But they have a value you can't see
Now you can tear a building down
But you can't erase a memory
These houses may look all run down
But they have a value you can't see

We lived here for so many years
Now this house is full of fear
For a profit you will take control
Where will all the older people go?
There used to be when kids could play
Without the scourge of drug's decay
Now our kids are living dead
They crack and blow their lives away

Now you can tear a building down
But you can't erase a memory
These houses may look all run down
But they have a value you can't see
Now you can tear a building down
But you can't erase a memory
These houses may look all run down
But they have a value you can't see

You've got to fight
You've got to fight
You've got to fight
For your neighborhood

You've got to fight
For your neighbor

I feel like telling all these assholes the same that caused the White flight in our old neighborhood.. They have sec. 8 near where I live now even. I wish someone would burn those buildings down,, not w people inside,, but to get rid of the slime. It goes both ways. When will we realize we are even. Stop the Racism.

    T.... ....

Y'all don't even appreciate where you live anyway.

Saw these guys open for the Stones in ‘89, hearing their music brings me right back to that time, my youth.

  6. M.... C....

  8. M.... C....

Lo más underground y trallero que visto

  9. T.... D....

These guys were totally awesome. The show "In Living Color" helped bury this band. They deserve so much more. This is the direction black music should have gone.
These guys were leaders and should have driven music instead of rap.
Listen to "letter to a landlord." These guys were the real deal.

    T.... D....

    "Video Killed the Radio Star"

  11. M.... H....

    Amazing

  12. S.... N....

They are still around. Still a great band. What I love about them the most is that they never sold out. They have always stayed true to their message.

  13. J.... K....

Dedicated to Donald Trump, along with The Dead Kennedys' "Let's Lynch The Landlord."  Trump's idiot bastard kids need a Holiday in Cambodia.

  14. R.... J....

    Vernon Reid kicks ass

  15. p.... k....

    Bass is insane

  16. A.... R....

Stop gentrafacation now!!! Fight for your neighborhood now!! Living Color Up.......

  17. B.... S....

This song should have been huge back in the day. Great, meaningful song with a killer rhythm section, powerful, soulful vocals by the great Corey Glover, and of course the textured guitar riffs/licks of the amazing Vernon Reid. This song should have been taken to heart back in 1988-9, but I guess we middle-class White folks were too busy with our own material wants in the height of the Reagan Revolution to really care about the plight of poor inner-city Black (and Hispanic) youth. A shame, but hopefully maybe we can have a new revolution that actually benefits everyone (myself included) struggling to make it. #Bernie2020 #OurRevolution

you were paid (by welfare) to relocate.... that was part of the problem....Bill from Vyse Avenue,
the Bronx....... years ago..... and now built back up............

  19. K.... A....

I am always astounded when this band I listened to many years ago is still so relevant today. If not more so.
Fucking badass band, totally underrated. This was out when race relations were actually better than today even.

  24. d.... 1....

    great band

  25. L.... ....

Saw these guys open for The Stones on the "Steel Wheels" tour back in 1989, and they kicked ass  !!!Usually opening acts get bad sound and lights, cause the road crew is trying to get everything just right for the "Headliner", but it didn't happen at the show I saw. I think The Stones really dug these guys, after all Mick is on their debut album, but for whatever reason, they let them sound good, and sound great they did  !!!

  26. J.... B....

Vernon Reed it the man he's been beat'n the shit out that git for a long time now ,,,

  27. L.... !....

Una banda que jamás tuvo reconocimiento, que puto desperdicio.

  28. R.... ....

This is the band that most reminds me of Jimi Hendrix past his short life.

  29. J.... O....

Always love how tight their playing is

  30. R.... T....

Tragic what has happened to music why the fuck did music changed in such a shitty way this here is amazing.

    Such a great bass line!

  42. L.... ....

Now this is how you get people to understand societal problems and issues. Not by by yelling at them and blaming them for crimes people of the same race as you have committed. It’s influencers like living colour who give me the want and the need to change and try to help. Not being chastised by sjw’s and white knights.

  43. M.... T....

    The best

  44. E.... S....

Still love this song in 2019

  45. m.... ....

Most of the comments on most of this band's videos are something like "They're one of the greatest black rock bands but it doesn't matter what their skin color is."

Then why do you keep bringing up their skin color!?

  46. G.... H....

Only You Can Set You Free.,

  55. J.... M....

I used to live in a little town called Dixon Illinois. I lived there for about 17 years and it was really all I ever knew from the age of 3-20. I absolutely loved it there there were sooooooooo many people I knew and loved, sooooooooo many good jobs and just loads and loads of heart filled memories. My family decided to move to Kentucky and its ok but it certainly wont beat the small town of Dixon Illinois where I grew up and made mistakes, learned, found success and soooooooo many amazing things Dixon had to offer. I dedicate this song to my true hometown❤❤❤

  56. A.... ....

Why does this channel only have 72k subscribers? this is sad!

  70. K.... ....

    Muito boa essa musica.

  71. A.... ....

This is one of the greatest songs ever written and recorded. SO powerful!

  72. i.... ....

Arguably one of the best bands to walk the stage, all great musicians and when brought together they create a sound that is really like no other.

  73. d.... ....

    Detroit!

  74. c.... ....

Sometimes I gravitate towards this song for solace. I grew up poor. This song has such resonance.. sometimes it really hits me. Tears well up.

  75. K.... !....

Metal meets Funk. This song kicked ass back in 1989 & still kicks ass now. Luv that amazing bridge also.

  76. M.... V....

This is rock. Straight up, unfiltered classic rock.

  77. d.... ....

Who's opening a letter to a landlord on black history month?!

  78. D.... M....

I like how it's powerul, informative, and best of all not mean. Like sometimes just being nice is more persuasive. Since gentrification is super duper lucrative.

  79. A.... D....

Mother love bone brought me here! So glad I clicked on the video! Amazing!!!

  80. K.... H....

    🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡

  81. M.... ....

shame Corey went the way he did

  82. M.... M....

...This was amazing ...they had a metal groovy and funky sound that NO ONE ELSE can ever get to play it anymore.... like if the Chilli Peppers went metal...and still got that melodic heartbreaking chorus ... Great Song !!!... ..0:24 The twin towers in the back along with the lyrics is just creepy ..

  83. s.... n....

Lyrically it’s a bit to corny for me, apart from that tho I can dig this. Good to know there not a one hit wonder band with cult of personality

  84. I.... W....

This was NYC back in the late 80's

  85. V.... C....

    In 2019 ❤

  86. M.... C....

It was 30 years ago today: JAN 19 1989: I was in the audience for the filming of the stage performance part of this music video, at Toad's Place, New Haven Ct. Great Show!

  87. L.... H....

    no no can:t see

  88. R.... M....

    Great musicians!

  89. F.... S....

It's kinda late '80s and early '90s progressive metal type, like Fates Warning music

  90. c.... c....

I'm 38 and sorry that I'm just now hearing this song! Everything about this song my neighborhood is going through. We have a developer trying to force us to move so he can build a casino. Only 5 houses remain on my block but we aren't going anywhere!

  91. V.... O....

    Then came sevendust !

  92. V.... O....

Very powerful song and heart felt and full of truth when landlords in the 70s burned there're own buildings down just to collect insurrance leaving families out in the cold back in the 70s very sad song!

  93. S.... S....

A very emotional song dealing with urban housing conflicts at this time a movie with the same message came out the super with Joe pesci dealing with the same issues

  94. S.... R....

Why does everyone have to comment about race? Didn’t know they were black for many years it never mattered, just enjoy the great music.

  95. C.... B....

Great musicians. They shouldve wrote more than one rockn catchy riff though. Im not going to pedestal them just because theyre black rock band though. Theyre cool azzfuk n multi talented of course! However like a lot of ROCK GROUPS(exclude race) they couldnt pass or equate that one hit. Sadshit. Truth.✌🌐

  96. A.... E....
