Little River Band - Statue Of Liberty Lyrics

Give me your hungry,
Give me your tired,
Give me your homeless,
Give me your wanderers,
Statue of Liberty,
Standing in the harbour,
This is America,
We try a little harder.

Oh, this is America, ah.
We set the standards and everyone will follow,
We've got our own values,
But they're built on the dollar,
Statue of Liberty,
Standing in the harbour,
This is America,
We try a little harder.

Oh, but now it's tumbling, fakin', quakin',
Tremblin' on its own foundation,
There's been so many warnings,
Too late the old lady's fallin',
The only thing to do is to get out of the way,
Anything can happen in the U. S. of A.
Ain't no use anymore in tryin' harder,
Statue of Liberty sinkin' in the harbour.

You can be a millionaire by steppin' on the needy,
Words of equality, but they're written for the greedy,
Statue of Liberty, yeah, yeah,
Standing in the harbour,
This is America, we try a little harder.

Oh, this is America, ah.
Give me your hungry,
Give me your tired.
Give me your homeless,
Give me your wanderers.
Give me your hungry,
Give me your tired.
Give me your homeless,
Give me your wanderers.

Right Now, We're facing an assault from the "refuse" of the world wanting to force their way in illegally to get a "piece of OUR pie"... WRONG!! - You want to come into this country, Do it LEGALLY! ( Come into through our portals of entry with
all the necessary documentation that We Require, Etc. , No sneaking in through a hole in the fence; No swimming the Rio Grande; Do it as if You were coming to My front door with ALL your credentials, pre-approved to approach & be recognized! Then, I will allow you to enter! But, No coming through My backyard; knocking on My back door & expecting Me to let you in... NO!!!)

Thankfully Aussie bands don't have to lick American butt as much nowadays to make it big. Not hating on you Americans, but that was a fact back in the day if you wanted international success, hence this song and also this bands original incarnation was called mississippi. Mayb it's me but I hate selling out whatever the price. That's why bands like cold chisel gain my respect 10x fold for not bowing down to the US labels and remaining true blu

If you think these guys were licking America's butt with this song, you obviously haven't even bothered to actually listen to the lyrics.

-Hardly a butt kissing, ringing endorsement, is it?

@actormanic I don't agree. Regardless whether the lyrics are flattering or not its still trying to appeal to a US market. It's no secret that certain bands went out of their way to appeal to American markets. Mate, your criticism is unfounded and to prove my point there is even an interview with beeb Birtles where he explained how they came under huge pressure from Australian fans for naming the band mississippi, thus finding middle ground with naming LRB with an Australian theme. Don't be so ignorant to think that's not what bands did, to try gain international success. I mean really?

I don't know why this was never slated as a single. I always thought this and "Long Way There" were easily the two best songs on the album.
