Linda Ronstadt - What'll I Do Lyrics

Gone is the romance that was so divine
'Tis broken and cannot be mended
You must go your way and I must go mine
But now that our love dreams have ended

What'll I do
When you are far away
And I am blue
What'll I do

What'll I do
When I am wondering who
Is kissing you
What'll I do

What'll I do with just a photograph
To tell my troubles to

When I'm alone with only dreams of you
That won't come true
What'll I do

What'll I do with just a photograph
To tell my troubles to

When I'm alone with only dreams of you
That won't come true
What'll I do

many thanks for this beautiful song.

  7. T.... W....

This song reminds me of a day with my mom when she was well into her Alzheimer’s. We were watching a movie, The Butchers Wife I think. I was having no luck connecting with her, then this song was sung in the movie. I knew the song because of Linda and she knew it from her teens in the 40’s. She started to sing it and I chimed in, she was shocked I knew the words and like that we had something in common. Sweet moment.

  8. G.... F....

    Great voice!

  9. R.... S....

The reason this wonderful music wasn't lost to time was because of this album a real risk in 1983 this wasn't Boomer Tunes Linda is owed a debt of gratitude for making these American treasures accessible to a contemporary audience 5 years before When Harry Met Sally thank you so much Linda!!!

  10. E.... F....

Beautiful, but not as good as Bea Arthur's version

  11. W.... 2....

Who else came here front the golden girls

  12. J.... C....

LINDA RONSTADT IS GOOD TO LISTEN TO, IN THE SONGS, IN WHICH THE SOUND OF THE ORCHESTRA, IS DIFERRENTLY NEW IN STYLE, OF THE SONGS OF IRVING BERLIN , IRA GERSHWIN , ETC., IN AN ALBUM, TITLED," WHAT'LL I DO?", ARRANGED AND CONDUCTED BY NELSON RIDDLE, FOR HIS ORCHESTRA .

IT WAS AROUND MID -1980S, MTV WAS A NEW POPULAR, MUSIC PROGRAM.

PLEASE, REALIZE THAT MISS LINDA RONSTADT IS ALSO VERY NICE TO HEAR , THOUGH QUITE A LITTLE DIFFERENT FROM THE STYLE OF SINGING OF THAT OF MISS BARBRA STREISAND, AND OF THAT,TOO, OF MISS DIANE SCHURR.

STREISAND REIGNS AS THE YOUNG FEMALE BALLADER OF THE STANDARD SONGS .

STREISAND STARS (WITH OMAR SHARRIF) IN,"FUNNY" , A SUCCESSFULLY POPULAR MUSICAL, FOR IT
IS QUITE GOOD, IN WHICH SHE SINGS , " PEOPLE", A SONG THAT MADE HER POPULAR, TOO.

  13. R.... B....

Can anyone sing better? It’s a miracle that great records were made during the music revolution from 1955 til 1985.

  14. M.... J....

What a voice! I love you Linda. We have your recorded voice now, and that is a consolation.

  15. J.... W....

I love this song. If you do too, especially by Linda, I also recommend it by Frank Sinatra, and Golden Girl Bea Arthur, and Johnny Mathis, and Nillson. All are a little different yet melancholy and beautiful.

  16. J.... P....

She is really great on these romantic songs wow

  25. D.... L....

A classic! Well done by Linda!

  26. r.... ....

The rock stuff won't be her legacy, the standards will be. Beautiful. She knows how to sing them without messing them up.

  43. J.... K....

Linda was singing best when she sang these low key songs.

  44. M.... R....

For some reason this song has been on my mind for a few days now. Beautifully sung by Linda!

  45. R.... P....

    Wonderful.

  46. R.... P....

I don't know which is greater, Her beauty or her voice. What a paradox.

  47. C.... R....

My second favorite version of this song is by Bea Arthur on the Golden Girls. Pure class either way!!

  48. J.... W....

That voice breaks my tough heart. Ronstadt had a special kind of sadness in her.

  49. K.... K....

    What'll I Do
    Written by Irving Berlin

Gone is the romance that was so divine
'Tis broken and cannot be mended
You must go your way and I must go mine
But now that our love dreams have ended

    What'll I do
    When you are far away
    And I am blue
    What'll I do

    What'll I do
    When I am wondering who
    Is kissing you
    What'll I do

    What'll I do with just a photograph
    To tell my troubles to

When I'm alone with only dreams of you
    That won't come true
    What'll I do

    What'll I do with just a photograph
    To tell my troubles to

When I'm alone with only dreams of you
    That won't come true
    What'll I do

    R.... S....

    Thank you

  57. T.... F....

her voice is like magic I bought every record she ever made There will never be another lady with a voice like her's .. Thanks for posting the song and the beautiful pictures

    T.... F....

What does "her's" mean, TheMan FromAspen? Here in Southeast Asia, I'd never seen that before.

  58. L.... L....

A vocal and visual treasure. Strong and tender all at once.

  59. M.... G....

Sad story: I entered a contest when I was much younger and the first prize was a trip to New York to have dinner with Linda Ronstadt. I got second place. Biggest disappointment in my life.
Love you Linda. You are, and always will be. the best.

    M.... G....

yeah, if I remember correctly, second prize was lunch with Debby Boone in Dubuque (transportation not included)

  60. C.... ....

The mirror picture from silk purse made me cry just a bit.

  61. k.... ....

  63. P.... S....

I heard her on NPR's Saturday morning show "Wait Await Don't Tell" Great sense of humor. She wasn't asking for sympathy when she explained what the problem is now with her attempt to sing With Parkinson's. It breaks your heart. But we still have her recordings also have Sinatra's,Matt Munro's Perry Como's and many others. They will live forever. If you want to hear another moving rendition of this song look for the beginning of the movie The Great Gatsby" with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. I forget the singer's name but he played the obnoxious TV news guy on the plane in Die Hard II.

    P.... S....

Palmer Short -- Agreed; I love the "Great Gatsby" soundtrack - so in touch with the movie itself. Also listen for "Alice Blue Gown" on the soundtrack. Barbara Cook also does a fine version of "What Will I Do?" And another great
    I. Berlin song is "When I Leave This World Behind" -- try it sung by Hadda Brooks. 9/2017

  64. c.... c....

Ronstadt and Riddle. They changed the game. Linda, we miss your voice.

    c.... c....

Absolutely, when she teamed up with Nelson Riddle a true marriage was born, outstanding !!!

  65. S.... G....

She's just beautiful. I hope the illness she suffers now won't take any more from her. Taking that voice is such a blight.

  66. A.... B....

    timothy,
    that was the verse.

  67. L.... ....

This IS very nice, but for a more upbeat version, listen to Ray Charles' version. He also has the "pre" verse.

    L.... ....

Why would you do this song "upbeat"?

  68. C.... H....

Gone is the romance that was so divine
'Tis broken and cannot be mended
You must go your way and I must go mine
But now that our love dreams have ended.......

    C.... H....

    The What's New album....what a Masterpiece

  69. C.... C....

Glorious voice. A gorgeous gal who sang with natural power, sadness and joy. Lovin Linda Ronstadt rockin' or crooning - doesn't matter where she brought that voice - always believed her.

  70. s.... r....

    Incredible. Beyond excellent.

    s.... r....

    Always cry listening this song...

    s.... r....

    @Zuleica Bergamini Me too ;(

  71. G.... G....

In my opinion, Linda Ronstadt is the ONLY female vocalist who could have done what she did in music during the last half of the twentieth century. We were all fortunate she was here at that time.

    G.... G....

So totally agree. No other female artist can touch her.

    G.... G....

    @Brooke Hanley Perfected them.

    G.... G....

@Steven Roland maybe Karen Carpenter could have taken a shot..?... she too is great, just in a different direction
I met Linda Ronstadt once at KQED where I used to work at the time...got my What's New CD autographed, and she is about the nicest, most down to earth person youd ever meet... just a sweetheart in every way... I'm such a fan-boy !! Since 1978

    G.... G....

@Vinnybrain Karen possibly. But she didn't have the strong pipes that Linda had and need when your playing with a full orchestra. And Linda could sing it all. Coutry, Rock, Folk, Ballads, Latin, and Standards. I'm so envious. Linda seemed to be able to keep her personal bearings even at the height of her popularity.

    G.... G....

Vinnybrain Karen is my favorite single...

  72. m.... c....

Irving Berlin beats the hell out of Robert Hunter

  73. t.... ....

SUPERB ARRANGEMENT love that she includes the "pre" verse….

    t.... ....

+timothyj1966 In my opinion Nelson Riddle was the greatest arranger of popular music in the Twentieth century., Tim. His work with Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, and Linda Ronstadt has never been surpassed.

    t.... ....

+catman916 his intros to these songs are wonderful.

    t.... ....

    Absolutely right

  74. R.... C....

FORGET THE LOOOOOOONG INTRO & THE CRAPPY ARRANGEMENT -- THIS IS A GREAT IRVING BERLIN SONG !!

    R.... C....

+Ritchie Cross Evidently Ritchie you are not a lyrics guy. Listen to the verse again , it sets up the chorus giving emphasis to the rest of the song. W/O the music just say the words. Now that our love dreams have ended , What''ll' I do when you are far away and I am blue , what'll I do? In fact the whole song supposedly was written when the girl he fell in love with was whisked away by her parents. Not wanting her to marry Mr Berlin. Another comment, Nelson Riddle was probably the best arranger of music from the fifties till his death. His arrangement of the album "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning" with Sinatra stands out as probably the best album of it's genre. And please don't tell me you've never heard Sinatra's " I've Got You Under my Skin" arranged by who else Nelson Riddle. In my opinion music suffered when they started leaving out the verse. Listen to Ella Fitzgerald's verse and chorus of " Someone To Watch Over me" Maybe I'm just getting too old or maybe the people nowadays are in just in too much of a hurry to listen to the verse. Sad.

    R.... C....

THANK YOU, Mr.SHORT -- YOUR COMMENTS WERE INFORMATIVE AND ENJOYABLE !! REGARDS -- RITCHIE CROSS

    R.... C....

+Ritchie Cross I appreciate your polite reply. I'll throw another verse attcha. Listen to Sinatra's verse and chorus of "I've Got A Crush On You" How glad the many millions of Annabells and Lillians would be to capture me etc. This was a creation of that great team George and Ira Gershwin . Okay enough. Take care Ritchie.

    R.... C....

DEAR HENRY -- I DUNNO WHAT "Bh" MEANS !!

  75. M.... Z....

no one wrote better than Irving Berlin & Cole Porter

    M.... Z....

Rodgers and Hart were great as well

  76. S.... H....

The great Gatsby.......Do you know they demolished the house that was the inspiration for the book,a few years ago.she was a beauty.

  77. M.... ....

Hey! don't steal Fee and Foo's song!!!

  78. B.... P....

nice version will give it B plus this is one of those songs that a few people own like Patty Cline and Crazy, etc.

  79. J.... T....

This is a particularly bad copy of a beautiful song.  I can hardly understand her words!

    J.... T....

@Janet Taylor Bad copy? Are you kidding? Or simply ear-challenged? Listen again with the lyrics in front of you. My own pet peeve is singers who allow "style" to overwhelm substance. That is not happening here.

    J.... T....

oh Janet! you must have a bad case of ear wax! Linda only clearly enunciated every note she's ever sung!

    J.... T....

    +Janet Taylor You're kidding, right?

  80. J.... C....

When I'm alone with only dreams of you that won't come true , what'll I do ?
    What a question .

    J.... C....

    💘👥Yes indeed. What a question. And the answer is: 😢 😭 https://youtu.be/IvzFt8PPXvE

    J.... C....

I just don’t know. The longing never ends.

    J.... C....

Irving Berlin knew how to write a love song!

  81. B.... C....

I played ALL your music. I miss you. Prayers,...

  82. c.... c....

    im a selfish m..f,,

  83. M.... ....

    Hmmm such a nice voice...

  84. S.... P....

    Just beautiful!

  85. b.... a....

This album is a must for any Linda fan. The great mix of voice and orchestra.

  86. c.... ....

I didn't read through all the comments but I love the way the arrangement slides from Ab to A on the sax solo and Linda picks it up on the bridge in that key which makes her voice power into the ending very cool

  87. l.... ....

I could pick her voice out in a million - voice of an angel!  Thank you Linda

    l.... ....

+letmeinwillu I agree smooth but very powerful.

    l.... ....

YES!!! As recognizable as a rainbow in the sky ❤

  88. A.... R....

I love this rendition. The younger singers of today are keeping the wonderful old songs alive:)))

  89. d.... ....

    so  achingly  sad

  90. K.... P....

I agree her voice is beautiful and she carries the tune so smoothly. Irving Berlin did such a great job too writing this song.

  91. T.... ....

    Such talent and beautiful voice..

  92. H.... ....

    Exquisite.

  93. S.... P....

I like the "Journeymans" version from1963.This doesn't do much for me.

    S.... P....

By the way I own this LP

    S.... P....

    @St Pauli
    Agreed.

    S.... P....

@St Pauli Bernadette Peters does a marvelous rendition of this too.

    S.... P....

@St Pauli Try  Al Jolson's version if you have a chance.

    S.... P....

    Seriously??

  94. D.... T....

and i should add, nelsons superb soloists on all the tracks.

  95. D.... T....

linda at her very best.  love this album, and her voice is at it's very best. inspired coupling of linda and nelson riddle. can't be beaten!

  96. A.... B....

Given that the songs in this album, "What'll I Do" included, are not in LInda's wheelhouse, Nelson Riddle's arrangements knitted together music and singer about as well as anyone could.

  97. P.... B....

La Linda ! you are BEAUTIFUL

  98. J.... E....

    Beautiful voice, lovely lyrics

  99. V.... S....

So sad her voice has been taken from her.  One of the truly great singers of our time.
