Linda Ronstadt - Many Rivers To Cross Lyrics

Many rivers to cross
But I can't seem to find my way over
Wandering I am lost
As I travel along white cliffs of Dover

Many rivers to cross
And it's only my will that keeps me alive
I've been licked, washed up for years
And I merely survive because of my pride

And this loneliness won't leave me alone
It's such a drag to be on your own
My baby left me and he didn't say why
Well I guess I'll have to try

Many rivers to cross
But just where to begin
I'm playing for time
There have been times I find myself thinking of committing
Some dreadful crime

I've got many rivers to cross
But I can't seem to find my way over
Wandering I am lost
As I travel along white cliffs of Dover

Linda Ronstadt Many Rivers To Cross Comments
  1. t.... j....

Ya know, she's still the greatest. Every few years I rediscover her and get my Linda fix. Love Linda!

  2. A.... P....

That little gal sang her heart out. No one can ever say that she didn’t.

  3. M.... W....

The Hammond organ makes the song molto doloroso. Love it.

  4. C.... S....

I don't understand why people "dislike" a video or a song when it is the original song. If you don't like the Artist move on. Don't DISLIKE it. What does that mean anyway?

  5. p.... ....

One of the best voices ever, I can't believe I have been enjoying her music for 5 decades! She is in my soul and in the soundtrack of my life. It breaks my heart that she has lost her ability to sing and I pray she truly knows how much she has given us! Thank you Linda, for the way you have enriched my life.

  6. M.... ....

An amazing voice. Always so clear!! ❤️❤️

  7. A.... G....

    Such a beautiful song.

  8. B.... L....

CRYSTAL CLEAR VOCALS. One of her best deep cuts from Prime mid 70s Ronstadt.

  9. L.... B....

I think I like Linda’s version of Many Rivers To Cross the best - go girl! Beautiful

  10. A.... ....

Her voice gives me chills from the first note on.

  11. K.... M....

Miss Linda was a song stylist with few peers. Her version of so many songs are definitive. Thank you Linda for the musical background of my life. I soared to the heights on your voice and rose up from my life's valleys with the anthem or your voice.

    Thank you.

  12. D.... ....

just when i think i've heard everything.. something new comes to me.. she sings this so well.. love you linda

  13. p.... m....

Beautiful. Few singers can really sing this song as will as Richard Cliff.

  14. T.... P....

Truly a voice for the ages. Prisoner In Disguise was one of her best albums. There will NEVER be another like her. Linda you are loved by millions of fans and your voice cannot be stilled.

  15. C.... C....

At the tender age of 70, this has always been a personal song. I have been sharing a lot of the music of this era with my 40 year old daughter going through some of the same.

  16. G.... L....

Queen of her scene. Just adore her take on this Jimmy Cliff tune. Great grand pipes.

  17. A.... F....

It's Nov, 2018 and I just heard this wonderful song on The Division,,, Linda does it so good as always,,,

  18. G.... H....

She represents the timeless beauty of that era

  19. H.... C....

Deep Cut - an absolute pleasure from Ronstadt's mid-70s Canon.

  20. O.... W....

    My mom favourite singer

  21. T.... D....

I love her and this is one of my all time fav songs. Another artist to look for is Lou Beatty Jr. It was never published as a record but he did it for an Episode of ER and you can cath it on YouTube. Worth the listen.

  22. t.... j....

what a beautiful soulful powerful strong voice you just can not lose with a voice like that

  23. n.... h....

What an amazing beautiful song what a wonderful voice Linda will always be my favorite singer of all time thank you Linda for sharing your voice

  24. G.... K....

A Great treasure of a voice. Fine version of Jimmy Cliff's tune. Linda!!

  25. C.... B....

Everyone either wanted to either play on Linda Ronstadt's albums, sing background vocals, or have her play their songs. There will never be another Linda Ronstadt. She set the mark with her stellar 50-year career with a voice that will never be equaled or surpassed. No one gets tired of hearing her sing.

    C.... B....

    Well said. So true!

    C.... B....

    Andrew Gold singing backup

  26. p.... ....

In the day, my favorite singer. Have all her albums.

  27. H.... W....

This voice was stunning - Beyond the Hits - a singer for the ages.

  28. T.... P....

This is one of my favorite songs from one of her greatest albums (Hasten Down The Wind). I also loved the music from Prisoner In Disguise. Such a wondrous talent who had one of the most amazing voices. Linda you are loved and your music will live forever.

    T.... P....

    Tom P yup!

  29. m.... t....

she was great! parkinsons what a shame!

    m.... t....

michael taylor she is battling the same thing as Michael j fox is battling. That has not stopped him from acting. There was a show VERY VERY recently called the good wife. I NEVER saw a single episode but I know he did a few episodes of that show. He was also on the season finale of Kiefer sutherland show designated survivor. Parkinson's has not stopped him from acting. Why did it stop Linda from singing

    m.... t....

@countrygirl country musiclover I read that it is not her vocal chords that are affected by the illness but the muscles involved in singing.

  30. W.... V....

Just takes your heart away. This is one of Ronstadt's unsung gems. Still.

  31. e.... ....

Try never to forget how wondrous she was.

  32. M.... T....

    beautifull beautifull

  33. W.... P....

This is on the "Prisoner In Disguise" LP. If you have not heard it, do so now. Some people consider her finest record (1975).

    W.... P....

Walter Pewen well those who consider that her finest record have NO idea what they are talking about. I am probably the youngest person in the comment section. I am only 24. I have pulled up so many songs from Linda on utube but yet I STILL probably have not heard half of her catalog. I can honestly say that she is too talented to have just ONE best or finest record. She is too talented to have a certain few finest records. ANYTHING that has EVER came out of her mouth and ANYTHING that she has EVER put on a record is EQUALLY her finest. And I do not even own a single piece of music from her in my CD collection

    W.... P....

I go with hasten down the wind personal that's my favorite out of her run of 73 to 1980
Heart Like a wheel through mad love

  34. A.... L....

So lovely and heart rending. She manages to belt with verbrato effortlessly.

  35. D.... M....

Not my favourite rendition, but as is Linda, beautiful

  36. P.... J....

She captures the essence of this song the best, in my opinion.

  37. L.... L....

Great version. Certainly one of Linda's best vocals of the 70s. A bit overlooked in the midst of all her hits but she does Mr. Cliff proud.

    L.... L....

Luke Lee One of my absolute favorite Ronstadt tunes. Prisoner in Disguise is a terrific album.

  38. w.... l....

No one will ever be my singer but LINDA never!

    w.... l....

    whyshouldiputanamehere l true that!

  39. s.... ....

My G-d were we ever that young...

  40. .... ....

    맑은 음색은 언제 들어도 좋으네요^^

  41. T.... ....

We have rather poxy rivers in East Kent, that you can easily stride across, wot wiv the 600 feet of chalk underneath providing drainage.

  42. M.... M....

O bella linda, did you eve find that song that you were born to sing?

  43. P.... M....

    she sings our hearts.

  44. A.... C....

"and this loneliness won't leave me alone, it's such a drag to be on your own"...this line KILLS me every time...and I have heard Linda sing it countless times over the past 40 years! Her voice is timeless!

    A.... C....

    She is simply the best.

    A.... C....

A talent for the ages, Linda you are loved and your voice will never be stilled.

    A.... C....

    Adrian Canales
    Adrian,
Linda is the prime voice in a house full of great voices. The family did group sings on some weekends. The family pretty much was able to give Linny a driven ride. She is the personification of small town girl making it big. To see what her illness is doing to the whole family has done is choking. Her sister and her little brother both in 2016. It's down to Linda and big brother Peter who proves voices don't make a career. He was chief of police back when cops were cops and not politicians. The whole family has been so incredibly faithful it is painful to see them disappear. I don't see the next generation being driven. Not like Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Ronstadt's children.
God bless them all in all of their travels.

    A.... C....

    that's sweet, sir!

  45. A.... S....

Linda has done some mighty fine songs.

  46. P.... ....

    What a woman love Linda

  47. P.... E....

Great photo montage to back up a beautiful song.  Can't help it.  Love me some Linda.

  48. M.... H....

    many rivers to cross ... #in life#onmyown....

  49. R.... A....

Great adaptation of the Great Jamaican Jimmy Cliff OD song written in 1969 may his songs live forever! It's about the trials and tribulations of the African descendants who were brought to the West Indies and though free physically were still very much economically, psychologically and spiritually bonded in a foreign land far away from their homeland.

    R.... A....

Which is why I don't believe her when she sings this song. Can't picture her in this situation.

    R.... A....

    @howie9751 it's why it's called a cover numbnuts

    R.... A....

@Trucker Kev The Paid Tourist You miss the point.

    R.... A....

@howie9751 I didn't miss any point at all goofball.
she never said she put herself in the position that's why it's called the cover song she's only doing the lyrics..
it would be different if she came out and said the reason I covered the song is because I could put myself in the position of these people that Jimmy wrote about and I could feel for them she never did

    R.... A....

@Trucker Kev The Paid Tourist I don't mean because she isn't black or hasn't lived through the life. Any artist, COVER OR NOT has to make you feel he or she believes what they're singing about. It has to feel real. That's what make a song great. I'm a big fan of Linda's but she's not convincing on this one. She does a lot of covers and most of them are very good.

  50. R.... W....

A mighty powerful voice is needed for this song.

    R.... W....

    +Redally Wood Toni Childs..

    R.... W....

+Wayne Smith Completely different kind of singer than Ronstadt......and from a different era. Childs can't match the power of Linda in her prime.

  51. C.... W....

Bless Linda...and thank Linda for all her years of powerful song and talent.  WISH I could just give her a huge hug of appreciation for all those times her songs helped me through the hard parts of life...and the good ones, too.  Peace, beautiful lady.  Your music goes on and on and on...

    C.... W....

    +Aunt Lonny I so agree!

  52. b.... z....

So many years her voice was my guide and angel.  Though she can no longer can sing, the sound of her voice will live on through eternity.

  53. b.... z....

Every note, her voice and abilities are as perfect as possible.

  54. M.... Q....

Love this version especially the gospel- style vocals on the outro.

  55. R.... S....

I've crossed may rivers with Linda singing me home.  She is simply the best voice ever!

  56. D.... M....

Love the LADY, Love the song!

  57. T.... P....

This is one of my favorite songs (along with Someone to Lay down Beside Me) by one of the most gifted and talented singers EVER!  Such a haunting and lonely voice.  You can feel the passion she had for her music.

  58. c.... n....

I got this album as a Christmas present in 1977 and have been listening ever since! Linda u ROCK!

  59. r.... ....

Love it... I also did a rendition of this wonderful song "Many Rivers To Cross" I Ras JaJa and Visionary .... answering the legend Jimmy Cliff....

  60. S.... F....

I am addicted to Linda's voice, it does things I can't explain: she just dishes it out and I feel great: I think she already knows I am crazy about her and her fantastic golden voice

    S.... F....

Hey! You can't be in love with her because I am!

    S.... F....

    you are not alone Stuart😏

    S.... F....

Well a bit surprised that I'm still right up there next to The Glorious Linda and my words brought a kind response from you Adrian..so nice to share with you....and TheEldoradoKid !

    S.... F....

Well I'm not surprised you feel that way, but now it's my turn ok?

    S.... F....

    Will'in -

  61. T.... S....

Linda is AMAZING! One of my favorite songs...

  62. J.... M....

Nice job Linda, but Jimmy still owns this one. It's a very rare hit that you can't steal.

    J.... M....

+Jake Miller Listen to Annie Lennox and see what you think...

    J.... M....

@singtweetypie Thanks I enjoyed that. Very nice. I love the song and Annie's singing. I love Jimmy's version too. He's got the pipes and the soul for this one and he puts all of his heart in it. You can tell he lived it in Jamaica. Check it out if you haven't. If you haven't heard it on the album "The Harder They Come" check out the album. It is great ska, rocksteady and reggae.

  63. A.... C....

"...it's such a drag to be on your own..." -- Man, every time I hear her sing that line, it kills me!! Just about finished with her excellent book; I KNOW she has other books in her!

  64. 7.... ....

Really good ,... but the best version is by Nilsson.

  65. c.... ....

    You're welcome x 3, JA.

  66. J.... ....

Great Collection. Thank- you. Thank-you. Thank-you!

  67. c.... ....

I think that she really captures the emotion that Jimmy Cliff' conveyed in his original version.

  68. K.... B....

Ronstadt kills this song but the arrangement and backup vocals can't keep up with her singing it from the heart.

  69. s.... d....

    prachtige vertolking!!!! thanks for posting.

  70. P.... E....

You said it. She did "an excellent cover"....on about a zillion songs! Best 'interpretive' singer ever!

  71. P.... E....

What in the world does who she dated have to do with the competence of her talent? Scratching my head here....

  72. P.... E....

    YES!!!!!

  73. P.... E....

    Ms. Linda is
MY GIRL!!! Not the song, the vocalist!

  74. P.... E....

Seriously? I have multiple copies of many of her LP's; any you don't have I will be happy to send your way.

  75. c.... e....

Her biggest down fall was that she dated Governor Jerry Brown! He is a fool and will always be bad for california! How he got elected again is a mystry to me! She is such a great singer! glad she is rid of him!

  76. b.... ....

God, that voice! One of the greatest of the past several decades ...

  77. c.... ....

A few months ago I saw a documentary about Bob Marley, simply title Marley, that also discussed the differences between ska and reggae. It's worth watching.

    c.... ....

catman916 who the hell gives a shit about that annoying no talent bob marlie. NOTHING that he has EVER been associated with nor anything he has ever done is worth checking out. Why would somebody waste their time watching a documentary on that stupid annoying sack of crap???? Raggae is one of the worst genres of all time ever invented in music. NO talent of ANY KIND has EVER been released from raggae. Same with jazz and opera. NO TALENT of ANY KIND has EVER been released from opera and jazz.

    c.... ....

catman916 why the hell would you even put something about stupid Bob marlie in the comment section of the INSANELY TALENTED Linda ronstadt

  78. c.... ....

Yes, she did an excellent cover of one of his best songs. I also like his "The Harder They Come."

    c.... ....

Jimmy's Vietnam another great classic song

  79. c.... ....

Fortunately all of her albums, including her Capitol ones, are available on CD.

  80. J.... B....

    That's grounds for divorce! :D

  81. S.... K....

saw her in concert a few years back. she can still belt out a ballad.... love her

  82. c.... ....

bad karma t seel her albums . youll findem agin

  83. j.... f....

    Linda you have no equal
    J,E.F

  84. T.... C....

I once told Linda that she was the perfect woman for me many years ago but she just smiled and continued playing. I guess that was one big river i had to cross.

  85. D.... ....

Sacrilege ! Which prison are you in now? I'll Defend you !

  86. R.... ....

    what a voice...

  87. M.... M....

OMG been looking for this song for long time my favorite of hers! also love her albums with nelson riddle. one of the best voices ever! thanks LINDA for the memories!

  88. d.... ....

@bookguitarguy u fucking crazy ass idiot.. im not josh koscheck.. dumbass!!!!!!!

  89. b.... ....

@depeau44 And I tried to be nice... but look at the fucking thanks I get!! :O)) I'll tell you, some people just don't appreciate anything... Remember Josh-never bring half a brain to a battle of wits!! It's as bad as bringing a knife to a gunfight!!! LOL

  90. b.... ....

    @depeau44 "fans"...not vans :O)

  91. b.... ....

@depeau44 Whatever. Yeah, I saw your page. I might be "old", but I'm not into being intimidated by ANYBODY-even if they are 20 years younger than me. Bottom line, you're entitled to your opinion, I'm entitled to mine, but don't be surprised that Ronstadt vans would be pissed when you say "her version ain't shit". Just a poor choice of words-& trust me, there's nothing wrong with my ability to read, dude! So you like Oleta's version better? Who cares? Musicians know it's not a competition. Peace.

  92. d.... ....

@bookguitarguy i am not worried about an old fag like you... i could give two shits aboutt this wack ass song or your gay ass opinions fuck off and stop writing comments you punk ass bitch

  93. b.... ....

@purplepimpernel Another bitch!! Kick her ass to the curb!!! :O) With her record/CD collection. Probably jealous bc Linda was cuter than she is!!! :O)

  94. b.... ....

    @tvgrice67 What a bitch!! :O)

  95. b.... ....

@depeau44 Sure-you have a right to voice your opinion. Just don't play "victim" bc you CHOSE to come to a Linda Ronstadt page-where a lot of her fans would be-& say that her song "ain't shit". Unless you're a complete moron (which is possible, I guess), you had to know that Ronstadt fans wouldn't want to hear it. But you said it anyway, & disrespected her. Maybe it's just because your English sucks, & you couldn't say "Oleta's is better"? Truth: you picked a fight, now whining like a candy-ass!!

  96. b.... ....

@depeau44 Then why not just shut up, and run along to watch oleta- since nobody's interested in hearing your bad-mouthing here. If you had any talent, you wouldn't need to open your mouth, and regurgitate the noxious shit that comes straight from your @#$%ed up heart. Music is not competition-it's expression, and BTW, who the @#$% is Oleta??? :O)) Run along now, dumbass-Oleta (who??) is waiting for you!!!

  97. p.... ....

@tvgrice67 have you considered selling your wife?

  98. a.... ....

    @wanderyonder23 Agree.

  99. V.... G....

Prisoner In Disguise is one of my all-time favorite albums. It's one of the few that I have copies of on vinyl, cassette, and CD. It's what I consider to be one of those "perfect" albums...there is not a single track on there that I don't absolutely adore...
