Linda Ronstadt - In My Reply Lyrics
Now Matthew was a country boy until one day he found
That cheatin' folks was easier than plowin' his daddy's ground
He left his home back in Ohio, bound for Chicago's town
He crossed Big Jim and turned his back
A bullet cut him down
And as he lay there dying
He said "Will I see my Ohio?"
In my reply I lied a bit
And said I did not know
Now Jim McCall he was meek and small
And to become a man
He'd have to build himself up tall
With fancy folks and land
He threw some stones at honest friends
His children left him and he sneered
"That's what my kindness brings"
And on the south side he got lost
He asked me where to go
In my reply I lied a bit
And said I did not know
Yes Miss Lazy Susan called me up
She heard I stole the show
In my reply I lied a bit
And said I did not know
In my reply I lied a bit and said I did not know

so smoking ass hot
the background vocals by the Eagle, Bernie Leadon
The finest musicians and a lead vocalist to die for.
The incredible Buddy Emmons with Linda's great voice.
still got the lp!40 some odd years later
Schöner song, tolle Stimme!
very sad
Mesmerising
She does this great, of course, but I still prefer Livingston Taylor's version. I got both those albums back in the 70's, Linda's and Livingston's first albums. The best records either of them ever did, and absolute classics. Two of the greatest voices ever.
Love Sneaky Pete, but that's Buddy Emmons playing pedal steel on this track
Great version of this. Linda is the best.
best stone pony song
daniel leary not a stone pony tune, ronstadt solo I have the original lp
this is pure country
while at university (mid 80s) I was totally in love with Linda Ronstadt. I bought every album she had made. This remains in my top 5 of her recordings.
Sneaky Pete : It don't get no better .......................
Marvelous.
This is new to me and gorgeous - pure country gold. Linda's earliest incarnation is so unknown to most. I am just glad You Tube has allowed me to hear.
I got two albums by Livingston Taylor, The self titled Livingston Taylor from 1970 which has this song on it, and the album "Liv" from 1971. Don't remember what turned me on to him, I did see James play in a college bar in Syracuse just before "Sweet Baby James" came out, I think it cost me $3.
Linda's autobiography Simple Dreams is out now!
If anyone ever gets the chance, I strongly recommend listening to James Taylor's Acoustic Live & Rarities album. He plays this and many other awesome songs, written by others and himself, all in amazing form.
I saw Livingston open for Linda many, many years ago (her 1978 tour). I was only 14 but what memories and a show. Linda's voice pierced that arena like a pristine silver bell.
Yes, while not as well known as his big brother, Livingston Taylor is a singer-songwriter, who has had his own following since the '70s. He sounds very much like James. I'll see if I can find some of his things to send you.
