Linda Ronstadt - I Knew You When Lyrics

Yeah yeah ueah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah ye-ah
I knew you when you were lonely
I knew you when you were only
A boy all alone without love
I knew you when

I knew you when
You were sad and all alone
You didn't have anyone
That you could call your own

I knew you when
Your heart belonged to only me
But that was many tears ago
Now your love is just a memory

Yeah yeah yeah ye-ah
I knew you when you were lonely
I knew you when you were only
A boy all alone without love
I knew you when

I knew you when
We used to have a lot of fun
But someone came and offered more
Now I'm the lonely one

I knew you when
I was just a scared little girl
I used to be your only love
Before you came up in the world

Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah ye-ah
I knew you when you were lonely
I knew you when you were only
A boy all alone without love

Linda Ronstadt I Knew You When Comments
  1. c.... g....

    ay lab et. <3

  2. M.... R....

When Linda Ronstadt covers a song; she #OWNS the song!

  3. M.... ....

The Billy Joe Royal Classic sang with incredible vocal ability by Linda.

  4. L.... R....

Simply amazing that she was better live than in a recording studio.

    L.... R....

Mr. Roth, I know living with regret is not mentally healthy, but I am anguished that I never saw her live...and she was performing right in my backyard for decades. What a clueless teen and young woman I was!

  5. S.... G....

One of my favorites. Complicated song that keeps my interest still.

  6. M.... G....

For those wondering, the musicians are lead and backing vocalist Linda Ronstadt, backing vocalists Patti Austin and Rosemary Butler, electric guitarist Danny Kortchmar, bassist Bob Glaub, drummer Russ Kunkel, and pianist-organist Bill Payne.

    M.... G....

Thank you, Michael Glickman. I love looking for "the usual suspects" backing up Ms. Ronstadt.

  7. P.... F....

Has anybody analyzed her voice? Be interesting to view on spectrograph. I swear...Linda could produce TWO NOTE AT ONCE. Listen carefully...at ending.

  8. P.... F....

This song pulls the absolute best out of Linda.

  9. D.... K....

Anybody know where and when this was?

  10. K.... B....

She adds to the power of her voice (if that could ever be necessary) with her eyes, hand gestures, and the way she handles the microphone. So glad I was a teen in the 60s and had all these years if Linda!

    K.... B....

I know exactly what you mean, especially her gestures when she sings the big band song. "What's New."

  11. a.... d....

    Another great one by Linda

  12. S.... N....

Good song AND LYRICS. Artist is GOOD.bravo

  13. D.... D....

O.K., the 30 second Joyce Carol Oates MasterClass promo that's on before the video starts is really fascinating.  I mean, Oates is still weird as shit, but, even in just 30 seconds, she imparts some great information.  (You're welcome, MasterClass - and no, I did not get paid for this.)

  14. d.... ....

Holy mother of god!! Was there ever a song that Linda Ronstadt couldn't sing with godlike power, conviction and precision?!

  15. m.... ....

Is that Danny Kortchmar on guitar?

    m.... ....

    Yes it is

    m.... ....

Mr. Kortchmar was in her "What's New?" video.

  16. G.... ....

Never cared for this one. Kind of mushy soft pop/rock.

    G.... ....

Apparently, your comment was loaded onto the wrong video.  This one ("I Knew You When" by Linda Ronstadt) is nothing short of absolutely electrifying, as anyone can see/hear.

  17. Z.... S....

    Beautiful. ❤️

  18. K.... D....

    K.... D....

    KellyAnn Dean That’s awesome!

  19. S.... F....

Ronstadt can move her gorgeous voice in many ways. Powerful stuff. Don't over think it -

  20. T.... W....

I’m a huge fan of Linda but the videos from this album are pretty bad. She’s said in interviews that performing is not her gift. But man can she belt one out!

  21. A.... F....

What an Awesome Voice She Has.

  22. B.... P....

Gorgeous voice - natural wonderful pipes - diverse Playlist.

  23. S.... A....

Fell in love with this album around 1983

    S.... A....

    Great album the best!!

  24. H.... D....

Such an amazing job. Now I have to go see the movie Alpha. However historically inaccurate it is . This is a must see.

  25. t.... s....

My band and my self have played and performed this ! Fun song to perform ! :)

    t.... s....

Me too I'm in a Ronstadt tribute band this is the song I warm up to!!!

    t.... s....

@KellyAnn Dean Do you ever perform in NYC or on Long Island?

  26. H.... D....

My favorite track on this album. This song is a two way street with some tweaking. Timeless gem is what you are⚘🍷

  27. S.... S....

Today is 7-15-18. Linda was born in 1946. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, my lady. Thank you for many years of soul-satisfying music.

  28. J.... V....

Linda shows up the original artist (Dionne Warwick) again!! Is there anything she CAN'T DO!! You're the best!!

    J.... V....

Wasnt that originally a hit for Billy Joe Royal ?

  29. H.... D....

One of my favorite songs from Linda .

  30. P.... H....

Sooooo good - Linda absolutely slays this cover ... gentle and powerful .... WOW!

  31. S.... M....

Queen of hi-fidelity Vinyl. Even more impressive live. Strong and tender.

  32. E.... F....

She could sing nobody sings like her

  33. b.... w....

This is a voice! Hear it and weep, we only have it on recordings now, hope you have a bunch...

  34. T.... ....

Thank you SO much for posting this great piece of 80's magic~!!!!! Linda & the whole band were great this whole tour.
For the music in me, I can't figure out HOW or WHY 27 humans have managed to sink so low in life to click the Dislike thumbs down Idiot button on this song. All 27 must be untalented pinko commie morons to not even Like Ronstadt performing this song. If nothing else, this BAND was one of the most together well oiled machine in the history of Classic Rock. All 27 must be fans of another brand of music. But if that's the case, it'd be as bunghole as me going to a RAP or HIP HOPP video & hitting Dislike.
I stay in my own neighborhood on YT, those 27 should stay in theirs. uuurgh.

  35. M.... S....

I once felt for somebody in a similar way yet I was deceived betrayed and sold out by this person. I wonder if I could go back and do it again what would I change or would I just let it play out as it did. Oh well love hurts sometimes. Monogamy is unimaginable to other more intelligent beings. It's insanity.

  36. A.... M....

the greatest voice ,she makes me cry .....what a beautiful and powerful voice!

  37. M.... S....

    some things never change

  38. S.... M....

ALWAYS ALWAYS loved this, and you. SO glad to know you're on YouTube now too x

  39. D.... W....

good old Linda in the old days

  40. r.... s....

Oh yeah now you are talkin?

  41. t.... ....

I wonder:, Is it Cher singing back-up vocals?, Is it Mick Fleetwood drumnming? Marc Ribot is the guityar player (hope my spelling is right).

  42. R.... C....

Terrific slam dunk voice. Power and beauty - and no one belts like Linda. In person she was extremely special as well.

  43. G.... K....

Even all these years later at 70, she still has the looks and the personality. I'm 73 and have always loved her. She is a one of a kind, I am reading her book and enjoying each page. Linda you are precious.

    G.... K....

George Kellerman, I don't blame you for even a minute for loving her. She was always charming and very talented. I regret that she's not well enough to keep performing.

  44. G.... K....

Personality, looks and a killer voice that was Linda, all the way.

    G.... K....

George Kellerman truly a special package of talent. Even more remarkable live.

  45. G.... K....

This is one of my favorites. This girl could sing.

  46. S.... S....

One of my fav Linda covers.  And there are a lot of them I love.   The vocal attack is unparalleled.  No other female in rock music had that attack.  She just hits those notes full throttle.  Love it!

Does anyone know who the background singers are?  Those 2 gals look familiar.

    S.... S....

Stefan Sittig Pat Benatar had that attack, her operatic training helped, and this was just after pirates for Linda where she really perfected that last high note.

    S.... S....

@TJ Wash Benatar was not an attack singer and sang most of her music in mixed voice. Benatar's voice was nice, but it was nowhere near the instrument Ronstadt had and she also lost it fairly young. So much was made of her operatic training. Unfortunately, if you ever heard them both live, you realize, Ronstadt, without any, was a much better technician in EVERY way.

    S.... S....

@TJ Wash I'm as big a Pat benatar fan is anyone but she has nowhere near the vocal instrument that Linda had. And as stated above she lost a lot of her ability at a relatively young age. I don't think Pat could have approached the work that Linda did with Nelson Riddle. And believe me I don't say this is any disrespect to Pat Benatar. Linda is just that great. Perhaps along with Ella Fitzgerald and Gladys Knight one of our greatest

    S.... S....

@Jeff Williams It's worth adding that Pat Benatar believed Ronstadt was better than she was. She is on record as saying "Ronstadt had the most gorgeous voice I've ever heard" and when she won her first grammy she said "how can I be the best? Linda Ronstadt is still alive."

    S.... S....

@TJ Wash After reading your post, I asked Alexa to play Poor Wandering One from Pirates; your point was well-taken. Her confidence was off the charts after that experience; as she, herself said, "More tools had been added to my toolkit."
To Misters Wallach and Williams, my interest has recently been piqued about Pat Benatar. As a teen, I was just a "Greatest Hits," "blast the radio on the way to the beach" kind of gal. I was an old movie buff who, pre-VCR, had to set my alarm to wake up in the middle of the night to watch the old black and whites (I was thrilled when Ms. Ronstadt began her "American Songbook" chapter). I am now ready to explore Ms. Benatar's contributions, but already like her for displaying the rarest of traits: humility and self-awareness. What a gracious comment to admit to the superiority of Ms. Ronstadt's voice during an acceptance speech-hope I can find it on YouTube!

  47. R.... ....

This is breathtaking..I had not heard Linda perform this song before- so accomplished, so sexy!

  48. G.... G....

Is that JD Souther on the piano?

    G.... G....

No, that's Billy Payne from Little Feat.

    G.... G....

    Oh thank u!

    G.... G....

    +Gina Groveau You're welcome.

    G.... G....

    I think that’s Andrew Gold

    G.... G....

@Jim Matherly It's not Gold, although the mistake is understandable.

  49. S.... #....

This is a vocally challenging song but Linda made it look easy!

    S.... #....

Ain't it the truth, ain't it the truth

  50. C.... S....

entered Billboard Dec 11, 1982 ..reached #37 originally by Billy Joe Royal in Sept 1965

  51. F.... A....

The last of the great natural vocalists. The straight on purity and power is so effortless. Perhaps that is why she took her voice elsewhere. Luv it.

  52. W.... R....

What a sensation she is at the top of her game here.

  53. C.... N....

Only knew this song by Donny Osmond lol

    C.... N....

Carole Nielson, he did it well, too.

  54. j.... ....

Great cover of Billy Joe Royal tune. :)

  55. I.... W....

, I knew you when I was just a scared little girl I used to be your only one before you came up in the world ,💕👫💕 but someone else better came along and offered you more, haha you think is better but you'll always think of me😤 and then you going to be singing I knew you when you was a scared little girl 💖👧💙 not scared little girl anymore you can put those lyrics in that's for sure

    t.... ....

    Linda nails EVERY song!

  57. e.... ....

    Russ Kunkel on drums!

    e.... ....

elbay2 who gives a crap. This is about the angel.singing in the video. Not the drummer

    e.... ....

@countrygirl country musiclover Stop acting like an idiot. If you admire her and know anything about her generation of musicians then you admire and respect the professionals that she chose to work with. Rude little twit.

    e.... ....

Little Feat's Bill Payne on piano. She only worked with the best.

  58. W.... S....

    The Best...

  59. F.... H....

Before, the singers were talented, Linda was wonderful!

  60. R.... M....

    Great talent.

  61. G.... B....

my god , soooo good  , so powerful.  what a voice !  what a girl !   the best ...... always.

    G.... B....
