Linda Ronstadt - Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry Lyrics

The torch I carry is handsome
It's worth its heartache in ransom
And when the twilight steals
I know how the lady in the harbor feels

When I want rain I get sunny weather
I'm just as blue as the sky
Since love is gone can't pull myself together
Guess I'll hang my tears out to dry

Friends ask me out
I tell them I'm busy
I must get a new alibi
I stay at home and ask myself where is he
Guess I'll hang my tears out to dry

Dry little teardrops
Hanging on a string of dreams
Fly little memories
My little memories
Remind him of our crazy schemes

Somebody said just forget about him
So I gave that treatment a try
Strangely enough I got along without him
Then one day he passed me right by
Oh well I guess I'll hang my tears out to dry

Linda Ronstadt Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry Comments
  1. a.... ....

This is one of very finest torch songs, the result of a partnership between one of the greatest lyrics author -- Sammy Cahn, and Jule Styne, who also did the music for Gipsy and Barbra Streisand's "People"

That note at 3:28 just takes my breath away.... she stretches " ohhh well.....i....guess...." ... all at full volume and vibrato, as only she could.... geeze whatta voice!!

  3. M.... R....

Sublime is the only way to describe her voice. Nelson Riddle orchestration magicaj

  4. P.... M....

Her voice was made to mesh with the orchestra. Beautiful Linda.

  5. p.... ....

I'm a prog-rock fiend - I play in a heavy rock band - THIS destroys me - every time. WHAT a voice - and Riddle - just peerless. Whatever your 'bag' musically - if its quality - it will out!

  6. A.... A....

A very sophisticated song in both melody and lyric. Wonderfully done by Linda Ronstadt and the great Nelson Riddle. His albums with Ronstadt were the last in his long distinguished career. One of the great songs of the American Songbook!

  7. D.... C....

Perfect lyrics - wrapped around an chillingly emotive melody and delivered to you on high by a magical songbird - If God were to write a song - here you go...

  8. M.... C....

I am so sorry you're sad....

  9. T.... W....

This is probably my favorite from this album. The way the melody sneaks up on you from being almost shy and vulnerable to outraged and explosive. Brilliant.

  10. J.... D....

    Beautiful.

  11. V.... ....

Glorious, as only Linda could do it.

it gets to a point where there's nothing left to do but ""HANG MY TEARS OUT TO DRY"". @ELTORODETRES

I couldn't love this collection and this song in particular, more. Brilliant and beautiful, sad and sublime.

The Great Author Carl Hiaasen in his Book with the character Gov. Skink Stated that Linda Ronstadt had the The most Beautiful Voice Ever. Vote Gov. Skink

  15. N.... L....

I love how the standards organically beg to open up the voice and vibrato.

  16. R.... L....

So sad that Linda is now in such ill health.  She's had a remarkable career.  Love this song, but Mr. Sinatra has the definitive version.  Check it out on his "Only The Lonely" LP or CD or on YouTube.

Try Ray Charles' version. I've cried many tears listening to this song.

    R.... L....

Sir there is no Ray Charles version on youtube that I can find.

    R.... L....

yes!! I love her to!! :(

  17. T.... K....

    2:54 on is transcendent!

    T.... K....

    Exactamente'

    T.... K....

Agreed. That key change is lovely.

As the Hulkster used to say :
    "Amen brother"

    At 3: 37..
    ..wow whatta note!!

  18. b.... j....

I may be in the minority here but the only lady I know still standing who does a better "torch" than Linda is in New York Harbor.

  19. a.... ....

We owe this magisterial torch song to a great composer -- Jule Styne.

  20. E.... B....

Linda knows how to own a song, no matter what genre. I must admit that my favorite work of hers is this stuff with Nelson Riddle. It really shows her voice off.

    E.... B....

Yes she does own it doesn't she! It is like she is living it and wearing it!

    E.... B....

I'll agree with that Ed Britt!.
It takes a Powerful voice, someone who can hear pitch, and great vibrato control. To pull off a feat of Masterpiece beauty like this!! The whole album plays sooo well start to finish.... the Super-Good Top Shelf stuff!!

  21. j.... ....

Nelson Riddles arrangement and the chord changes with Linda's voice is aboslutely mind blowing in this song.........especially from 2:54 on..............good grief what brillance.......

  22. j.... ....

    Simply beautiful

  23. J.... ....

    @Kasbahkabaret Yes ;o)

  24. K.... ....

Back when this album came out, I had it on casette and I wore it out. The whole collection is great.
