Those books are a guide to growing up to be a useful, thoughtful, and worthwhile human being, subtly hidden in an adventure story. I re read them every year. Was really disappointed that Christian loons rose a stink and made sure the movies stalled... can't wait for this series!

He intentionally twisted huge passages of the Bible and made it into his own story, and while everyone is free to his or her own beliefs, I have to admit that the way he over-emphasized an abhorrence of Christianity kind of crossed a line after a while. His implications were clear, and I think that at a certain point, it became an insult to the beliefs of a large group of people. Honestly, what was to be expected after that? Everyone just standing by?

The story may have been brilliantly amazing, but I think the subtle innuendos promoting atheism that were between the lines of the plot may have gotten a a lot of people on edge. Don’t blame the Christians for acting up about it, it was kind of leading to that anyway.
