Lightfoot, Gordon - The Way I Feel Lyrics

The way I feel is like a robin
whose babes have flown to come no more
like a tall oak tree alone and cryin'
when the birds have flown and the nest is bare
Now a woman Lord is like a young bird
and the tall oak tree is a young man's heart
among his boughs you'll find her nesting
when the nights are cool she's warm and dry

Your coat of green it will protect her
her wings will grow your love will too
But all too soon your mighty branches
will cease to hold her and she'll fly from you

Now the way I feel is like a robin
whose babes have flown to come no more
like a tall oak tree alone and cryin'
when the birds have flown and the nest is bare
when the birds have flown and the nest is bare

  1. J.... ....

Ik kende hier maar 1 liedje van, inmiddels een 10 tal.
    Even prachtig.
    1 voorkeur weliswaar,.
    Go Go Girl

  2. L.... T....

    Overdue for the POET

  3. z.... J....

Why was lightfoot underrated his music is simply masterpieces of art I could listen to him all day

  4. R.... P....

This is the real Canada.........True North!

  5. L.... T....

    Way I feel

  6. G.... E....

    Perfect

  7. L.... G....

First song I learned to play on guitar.

  8. a.... ....

the important of the backing guitar harp like picking really adds something

    a.... ....

    so simple,yet so emotional

  9. g.... v....

If there's ever a Gordon Lightfoot movie he should be played by Chris Pratt. They look like twins.

    g.... v....

Yeah but he wasn't blessed with the voice, don't get me wrong he has a good voice and probably could belt out some really good music but I don't particularly hear him singing Gordon Lightfoot in a way that would do the man justice.

  10. r.... g....

love it ,also the cover of Joathan Wilson is superb

  11. T.... M....

I will always associate this song with my first real love. So deep and powerful it resonates 46 years later.

    T.... M....

    Where is she dancing now?...

  12. K.... ....

Don't get me wrong, the original is superb

  13. a.... l....

In the quiet moments of any morning is the the sound of the songbirds chirping. Behind it I can hear the radio and the sound of Gordon's song is omnipresent. Songs of loss and love and loss again. Pain is what creates great art. If you are hurting, write it down and other's will share with you. If you are joyous get out the pencil crayons and draw. Your creation is born of the dust and dander of the death of pain.

  14. K.... ....

Check out Fotheringays cover of this, it's ridiculously good, such a gem of a find

    K.... ....

@Ktonrider I actually prefer Fotheringays version, but this one is also good. The original should, no matter your preference, get most of the credit.

    K.... ....

    @Ktonrider
    A great cover indeed!
Jonathan Wilson also made a great cover ! In a more rootsy rock style and really really good! ;-)

    K.... ....

Bought this album in 1967. Still one of my favorites.

  15. d.... s....

It's like Wayfaring Stranger on Valium.

  16. j.... ....

He sings like the Canadian wilderness feels.

    j.... ....

    totally right on!!!

  17. D.... Q....

    Haunting...

  18. S.... ....

More metaphors from Lightfoot, about relationships and love lost (she will fly from you). Nice guitar picking.

  19. L.... P....

This Haunting prolific song with its ethereal guitar introduction has a persona of expression with personal identity & internalized feeling unique to each listener's life. The lyrics are profound with a crying sound of futility mixed with future prideful hope! This song is my favorite because of the soulful lyrics sung with deep feeling!

  20. T.... ....

Jonathan Wilson's is good seranda73, but the better cover imo is by Fotheringay.

  21. S.... ....

Thank you, Gordon! Jonathan Wilson's version is beautiful but the original one is so pure! : )

  22. R.... C....

    Classic Canadian song!

    R.... C....

    Here's the young 60s troubadour!

  23. M.... L....

Gordon Lightfoot, the most beautiful singer of song.

  24. B.... M....

The album you see there is his first and it had this song on it. It was the first album of his I bought way back then and still have it.

    B.... M....

Best album of his career --just didn't get much promotion . Spare and full of feeling .

  25. O.... ....

    BEAUTIFUL!

  26. C.... M....

While the track we're hearing here is "The Way I Feel" from 'Lightfoot!', recorded in 1964 and finally released in March 1966, BlackHoleBrew42 is indeed thinking of a re-worked version Lightfoot put on the April 1967 United Artists LP, 'The Way I Feel.' The second version on the second LP has distorted, perhaps backward guitar loops, drums, tambourines, echo-laden vocals and works as a Summer of Love-style track. Lightfoot's 2-CD 'United Artists Collection' has all the UA work.

  27. N.... ....

Yeah, this version is far superior to the one with drums on it. Not that the other one is bad, but this version lets the guitars and bass deliver the tension, and MAN! does it hit home!

  28. P.... E....

"The Way I Feel" album has a much inferior version of this song on it. This version is from the first album.

    P.... E....

    sounds good to me

  29. P.... S....

    Sweet melancholy, wonderful song

  30. N.... M....

@darshloaf "The Way I Feel" was also the third track on his debut album as well as being on his second. That was common in the 60s to have a song show up twice on different albums. Simon & Garfunkel did that with "The Sound of Silence".

  31. D.... S....

@Scout4Me1 BlackHoleBrew is right; "The Way I Feel" is his 2nd album. The picture is of his 1st album entitled "Lightfoot!" Thanks for posting the song though.

  32. R.... ....

    SWEET!

    Thanks

  33. W.... C....

I know that the stated on Canadian Idol the it was the title track from his second album Shane Weibe sang it and did a great job. Check it out as it's on here too.
    Beautiful song!!!

  34. N.... ....

The version with drums is okay in my opinion, but there's an quiet intensity to this one that is just outta sight, especially the instrumental break.

  35. S.... D....

    One of his best songs!

  36. v.... ....

BlackHoleBrew is definitely right. The first version, which matches this album cover has a steady, droning vibe to it with lead elements near the end of the song that will later re appear as guitar lead hooks on TWOTEFG.

  37. M.... ....

I remember hearing this for the first time back in the early 60's when I was just learning what you could do with a guitar, a pen and some paper. This was inspirational. The electric version is good too. A good song can survive and thrive in the hands of many artists. It's a testament to the quality of the writing and the best stuff always brings you back to the original like Dylan or Tom Waits. Thanks Scout4Me

  38. t.... ....

i love this version so much more than the electrified version that is the title song on a later lp.....tysm for posting this

  39. B.... ....

I think this song is actually from "The Way I Feel" which is his second album. It also has "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" and "Song for a Winter's Night" and came out about 1967.

  40. r.... ....

    @straydog02 agreed! you in ontario?

  41. r.... ....

    best tune

  42. s.... ....

I thought you would like this one kitten... It's always been my favorite Gordon tune.

  43. s.... ....

    This is Gordon's best !
