Lightfoot, Gordon - The Mountains And Maryann Lyrics

All is well
I've made my peace where highways never end
Yesterday's a memory today is just a friend
For the mountains and Maryann are calling me again
And the red pines will bow their heads
The rivers and the watersheds will swallow up my tears
All is well
I left the cold midwestern towns behind
There's a semi up the road ahead I'll take him in my time
For the hot-blooded mountain love is calling me again
And the vagabond within me cries
The wind and rain might burn my eyes but I won't feel the pain
For the mountains and Maryann will greet me there as only she can do

All is well
As I swing up to the border bent for hell
And the service station man agreed I didn't look too well
But the mountains and Maryann are calling out to me
And I got my bedroll on my back
And everything that I could pack to see me on my way

All is well
I've made my peace and man, I'm feelin' fine
And the losers that I left behind I'll think about some other time
For the border men were all my friends they couldn't find a dime
And the prairie towns go sailing by
Saskatchewan there's mud in your eye I'm leavin' you behind
There'll be hot-blooded mountain love to satisfy my soul
And the red pines will bow their heads
The rivers and the watersheds will carry us along
And the mountains and Maryann will greet me there as only she can do

All is well
The foothills are coming into sight
Today is just a memory the future is tonight
And the red pines will bow their heads
The rivers and the watersheds will carry us along
And the mountains and Maryann will greet me there as only she can do

  1. R.... R....

the best along with Jim Croce.

  2. P.... F....

A man's song sung in a manly way by the author of it.
Maryann was in her place where a woman aught to be
up in the mountains ther a waiting by a tree.

I made my peace and man I'm feeling fine
And the losers that I'll leave behind I'll think about some other time

And the losers that I left behind, I'll think about some other time....thanks, Gord.

+Cathy Buchanan Somewhere back in the 70's, a certain Linnie Johnson was that Maryann for me in Denver. I reflect wistfully of her whenever I see the Rockies.

  5. C.... B....

All is well.....thank you, Gordie. The vagabond within me cries.

  6. P.... F....

gord studied Handel's messiah " to Learn how to sing with emotion"

    P.... F....

+Patrick Fealy Amazing. My most listened to classical piece - and sheer genius. Do you have any idea what Handel meant by "Lift up your heads, ye everlasting gates"?

    P.... F....

+Steray Snyder Psalm 25 I believe. Just something he found inspirational, wouldn't go crazy looking into it!

    P.... F....

+Clinton Shepley Thanks. But I've been going crazy over this for half a century. Is there anyone else out there?

One of the truly great Lightfoot songs, and then followed up on the album by another, even greater song--"Pussywillows, Cattails". One about the vibrancy and energy of youthful love, immediately followed by a more contemplative, "full cycle/four seasons" song that should be a part of any songwriting class. It doesn't get any better than this.

  8. j.... ....

when I was younger, I pictured myself coming home through beautiful mountains to Mary Ann from Gilligan's island,  go figure.

    j.... ....

@***** Is it any wonder men never find you attractive,  giving your dad rim jobs is not the same thing.

    j.... ....

@***** all this time and that's what you bring? your ignorance was apparent, but now all we can feel for you is pity .

    j.... ....

@jsilence418 I just love the internet.

    j.... ....

    +Fuzzybeanerizer My sentiments exactly.

    j.... ....

    +jsilence418 Perfect. Who hasn't?

  9. S.... S....

Linnie Johnson was my Maryann, but she lived in Denver.
Now she's a Stocktom living somewhere in Texas . . . San Pedro I think.
    A million miles beyond the moon . . . .

    S.... S....

@Steray Snyder Oh, to have someone miss me in such a way.

+Marilyn V. What a beautiful thing to say. May the Lord bless and keep you, and amplify your heart.

Saskatchewan 'he'rs mud in your eye..sang this on a bus when over the border to Alberta...1993....

+graham donachie One of songs I'd sing to myself while standing on the side of the highway waiting for a ride.

    g.... d....

+Richard Mousigian That, and Cold on the Shoulder. Once hitched a ride in winter from a service man who skiied for the Army (go figure), gave me a ride from Kansas City to Effingham, all the while thinking I was his long lost friend, Rick. I let him think so for 300 miles, and when I got out he said, "I know you're not Rick, I guess." I replied, "But I could have been." Pregnant pause. He smiled, nodded his head and left me with something I have never forgotten, "See ya, Rick". Like Steve Martin's definition of a kiss. "It may not be the truth, "

TheGator1972 -- My mom grew up with Gordon in Orillia -- he used to come to tea.  He sang in the church choir, and the school principal used to have him sing over the school PA.

More Canajan trivia about one of our great singers.

    J.... M....

    @Juanne Michaud How wonderful.

  18. l.... ....

I have been looking for this song for a long time!

  19. T.... ....

Great Canadian Boy from Orillia Ontario and Bigbiscuit this song came out in 1962 before it was released at the time he was dating a Liscomb I know for a fact cause it was my dad's sister in law and she told him he would be a nobody and never make it and my eldest sister was born Maryanne. Bet people didn't know that piece of historical fact.

  20. M.... R....

I've been in love with Gordon Lightfoot forever. His style is sooo mellow. And his songs are so easy to sing. Whenever I'm feeling down, I just turn on his playlists on YouTube and my blue just disappear.

  21. A.... M....

This song makes me miss the wilderness of the mountains. The joy and freedom I feel as I head into the backcountry with my pack and fly rod in hand

  22. S.... W....

another classic, wonderful song from Gordon Lightfoot

  23. C.... ....

Most people I meet who are Gordon Lightfoot fans have never heard this song. Just the songs from radio. I thing his best stuff is songs like this one or Mother of A Miners Child are really his very best. I love them all!

  24. S.... ....

    @spiffledorf

    Oh, how I envy you.

  25. V.... ....

@bigbiscuit100 ahhh, same story here... except im in southern ontario and we're driving in falling snow on icy roads as my dad and i go to yet another hockey game.

  26. J.... S....

    This song is hauntingly beautiful

  27. 2.... ....

    classic Lightfoot,makes life seem right

  28. H.... ....

Amazing how after all this time, I remember all the words to his songs!

  29. b.... ....

FINALLY someone posted this song! Whenever I hear this, it's 1980 again and I'm in the back of my Dad's truck as he steers it along a steep, dusty road in the hills of northern California. The tall fir trees are thick, the heavy summer sun relents only in the shade, and "all is well." thanks for posting this great song.

  30. m.... ....

Great to see this. Unbridled enthusiasm of early Lightfoot. Beautiful.

  31. O.... B....

Nothing like some early Lightfoot. Good song. Bo
