Lightfoot, Gordon - Medley: I'm Not Sayin' / Ribbon Of Darkness Lyrics

I'm not sayin' that I love you
I'm not sayin' that I'll care if you love me
I'm not sayin' that I'll care
I'm not sayin' I'll be there when you NEED me

I can't give my heart to you
Or tell you that I'll sing your name up to the sky
I can't lay the promise down
That I'll always be around when you need me

Now I may not be alone each time you see me
Along the street or in a small cafe
But still I won't deny you or mistreat you
Baby if you let me have my way

I'm not sayin' I'll be sorry
For all the things that I might say that make you cry
I can't say I'll always do
The things you want me to
I'm not sayin' I'll be true but I'll try

Ribbon of darkness over me
Since my true love walked out the door
Tears I never had before
Ribbon of darkness over me

Clouds are gatherin' o'er my head
That chill the day and hide the sun
That shroud the night when day is done
Ribbon of darkness over me

Rain is falling on the meadow
Where once my love and I did lie
Now she is gone from the meadow
My love goodbye

Oh how I wish your heart could see
How mine just aches and breaks all day
Come on home and take away
This ribbon of darkness over me

Yes come on home and take away
Ribbon of darkness over me

Gordon Lightfoot was and is one of the best ever. I like all kinds of music, but GL has a special way with a tune. You can smell the salt water.

Actually, Gord's from Orillia, ON, and he's been a proud Torontonian for over 50 years. So he's actually from fresh water country, but there's something so...Canadian about his songs. If you like this, check out his original solo-acoustic recording of "Ribbon"- recorded after Marty Robbins topped the country charts. It's a treasure. (His debut LP also included the songs Peter, Paul and Mary popularized: "For Lovin' Me" and "Early Morning Rain", great folkie-pop standards to this day.)

The master! I love going up to the mountains and cranking Gord's Gold. Especially this song. Reminds me of when I was married. Me and my ex used to walk hand in hand through the woods no matter what the season was. In the car, Gord was always in the tape deck.

    A.... E....

its great outdoors music isn't it? a long time ago, i was deep in the mountains of Montana, and listened to "The Watchman's out", and it was cranked, and it totally fit right in.

Excellent pair of songs by the great Gordon Lightfoot !!! I remember hearing Marty Robbins do a great cover of Ribbon of Darkness. Many great artists loved Gord's Gold !!!

Received Gord's Gold for my 14th birthday in 1975. One of the greatest troubadours of all time.

    Y.... S....

But he isn't a troubadour. Troubadours are french lyrical poets that existed during the medieval time period. He's more along the lines of singer/songwriter.

    Y.... S....

Yvonne Sohn ...I’ve always been in love with this man...

    Y.... S....

@Scarlet Begonia. Semantics. But you just couldn't help your ego from trying to ruin Yvonne's positive comment, could you? The term 'troubadour' is often used to describe singer/songwriters in the modern music industry and is part of the vernacular used by music reviewers and critics all the time. I'm sure you are aware of that, yet in a bid to feel intellectually superior you felt the need to remind us of the classical definition. Did it make you feel better?

    Y.... S....

    Scarlet Begonia

He’s Canadian though. You can’t say he may not be French.

    Y.... S....

    Tacit Observer
What ego are you talking about? Maybe you should be looking at your own for getting so fed up by a perfectly valid factual statement. But factual and semantic statements are clearly appreciable, nothing to take offense of like you did.

  21. R.... ....

One of the greatest artists in history

    R.... ....

I rate Gordy as #1 and all else fight behind him

  22. P.... O....

    P.... O....

    Patrick O'Donnell fuck yeah

  23. A.... H....

Country/Western legend Marty Robbins had a #1 hit with "Ribbon Of Darkness" one year before Gordon Lightfoot recorded it! Marty recognized Gordy's beautiful songwriting early on. Cheers!

    A.... H....

oh wow I didn't know that. I really like Marty Robbins too.

  24. t.... ....
