Lightfoot, Gordon - I'd Rather Press On Lyrics

Is it my imagination or is it my iron pride
I wonder if it matters much if time is on my side
I'd rather press on, I don't wanna rest easy
Anywhere I stray, I will make it a brand new day
Anyway, that's all I've got to say
I'd rather be by the seaside, than be playin' a one night stand
I've been too wrapped up in my own dreams, I will change things if I can
I gotta press on, don't wanna rest easy
Wouldn't it feel fine to return to the women and the wine
And all of the sunshine that we knew

You will never know what blue is until you have played the game
Till you live life in solitare where no one knows your name
I'd rather press on, I don't want to rest easy
Have it anyway you will, I will be with you right up until
The spell is broken and all is well

If you'd rather be by the seashore, well I sure can understand
Are you too wrapped up in your own scene, I would change things if I can
I'd rather press on, don't wanna rest easy
Wouldn't it feel fine, but remembering the rhythm and the rhymes
And all of the good times makes me blue

Wouldn't it feel fine to return to the women and the wine
And all of the sunshine that we knew

Lightfoot, Gordon I'd Rather Press On Comments
  1. C.... S....

A rhythm guitar, low key percussion, keyboards, lead guitar, and bass.
He knows how to put it all together in a unique artistic form.
    Nothing overembellished.
Then you add a rich baritone voice.
    Great music.

  2. C.... K....

I'm singing this song at work non stop...good Heaven's, I can't get this melody out of my head. What a wonderful feeling!!

  3. D.... S....

This man is amazing. The best songsmith ever.

  4. C.... ....

Only Gordon Lightfoot can write and perform beautiful and timeless tunes like these  spanning over 4 decades.  this is from his 1993 album. thanks for posting.

  5. R.... C....

This must be from one of his more recent albums.

    R.... C....

Waiting for you, 1993. He's realized two more albums since then.

  6. S.... C....

    imagination above all...talent unequaled.

I've often wondered why many radio stations over the years have ignored Lightfoot's exceptional music. Without a doubt the greatest lyricist I've ever heard, and his music is far superior to most. It's almost as if there is a conspiracy, (I hate that word sometimes!), to avoid Gordon Lightfoot. I've enjoyed this album for years now, and will for years to come. Great compositions are timeless.

+terrafirma91 - that's why we have internet radio, Pandora, I-tunes, Spotify, etc. I NEVER listen to mere "radio" in the car any more - MP3 player with the tunes I WANT. Radio always played it too safe, anyway. You only heard what was on "the charts" - what some programmer or programming company WANTED you to hear. In the case of Gord, it's ALWAYS "If You Could Read My Mind," "Sundown," "Carefree Highway," or "The Wreck." We both know Gordo has SO much more to offer than FOUR songs !!! So "program YOURSELF" !

Comical aside: In reading the "Lightfoot" biography by Nick Jennings, it was amusing to discover that "Read My Mind" was NOT the intended "hit" from the "Sit Down Young Stranger" album that was trotted out to radio stations by Warners in 1970 ("Me & Bobby McGee" was). It became the HUGE hit that was thanks to a "rebellious" DJ in Seattle ("Emperor Smith.")

    simple he is Canadian....
