Lightfoot, Gordon - Bitter Green Lyrics
Upon the Bitter Green she was,
the hills above the town.
Echoed to the footsteps,
as soft as heather down.
Waiting for her master,
Waiting through the years,
Bitter Green they called her,
walking in the sun,
Loving everyone that she met.
Bitter Green they called her,
waiting in the sun,
waiting for someone to take her home.
Some say he was a sailor,
Some say he was a prisoner,
who never was set free,
lost upon the ocean,
he died there in the mist,
dreaming of the kiss,
Bitter Green they called her,
walking in the sun,
Loving everyone that she met.
Bitter Green they called her,
waiting in the sun,
waiting for someone to take her home.
[Musical Interlude]
But now, that Bitter Green is gone,
the hills have turned to rust,
there comes a weary stranger,
his tears fall in the dust,
kneeling by the churchyard,
in the autumn mist,
dreaming of the kiss,
Bitter Green they called her,
walking in the sun,
Loving everyone that she met.
Bitter Green they called her,
waiting in the sun,
waiting for someone to take her home.
Bitter Green they called her,
walking in the sun,
Loving everyone that she met.
Bitter Green they called her,
waiting in the sun,
waiting for someone...
to take her home.

Lightfoot, Gordon Bitter Green Comments
My heart does sigh and cry and remember.
I have listened to Gordon Lightfoot songs since the late 60's & early 70's!! He is truly a great Canadian poet & artist!! Love him!!!!
This song gets me right you know where every time.
I am familiar with a different version of that song.
Was the Mary Ellis (1750-1828) story the inspiration for this song? It's rumored Ellis' story was the sores for Looking Glass' "Brandy you're a fine girl"...
wonderful-I love this song! It`s the name of our Band because he is an excellent singer-songwriter! One of the best...
Lightfoot captured "love" in his songs. That sounds cheezy I know. And "beauty".
no one will ever touch the talents of this man...amazing!
This song moved me to tears as a kid
It still does, and I heard it first many decades ago. Today at my laptop, I was a tearful mess, in the best way.
my dad shown my this music when I was three
Oh, well... better late than never.
My dad showed me this music when I was young, and I still listen to it! :D
Mine too.
He also had a daughter in his second family he nicknamed 'Chicken'.
If that's you, KH, hello:)
My dad introduced me to Gordon, and even though my dad doesn't talk to me anymore, I still listen to this to remind me of him.
otdoud ....I’m sorry ....I lost Dad too...he was very hard on me....pushing me to be as successful as he was...every man I’ve been with has been like him....except the man I’m with now. Love your dad no matter what....he won’t be with you forever ....❤️❤️❤️💔💔💔🌹🌹🌹
otdoud ...

😪😢😭😫 sorry to hear..
@Vivian Perino listen to her. (Unless there's a really good reason not to- in that case his best intention would have you let him go rather than destroy you. Do it then and know it's best, and let you both off the hook as best you can) Otherwise and if at all possible, really do try to find a way.
The best of luck to you both.
During the late 60's and early 70's my dad introduced me to Al Jolson, Gigli and - to my utter amazement - Gordon Lightfoot! He died before I could tell him how much I loved him; don't make my mistake.
