Libertines, The - Plan A Lyrics
There's one man left to thank
Built it with his hands
One man left to thank
He didn't need to carve it into something
Carve it into something new
And there's plan A
Take a seat A
Watch them play
Keep a receipt
Sharpen up and carve them into something
Carve it into something
Carve 'em into something new
Tell me what it is that you see
And your singing one two three
Open up my eyes
My twin he tends to be me
He walks abroad
He like the broads
While i soak and shake alone at home
....Smash stones
I don't need no bit of faith
Need no human race
Though i read every review
No ones got a fucking clue
And well new york sold your souls
And brought new shoes
That you never choose
Like to .....
And if you come from no where
You'll end up straight back there
You may as well
Carve carve carve it into something new
Carve it into something
Carve it into something new

Libertines, The Plan A Comments
Sharpen up
If anyone wants to know what the songs about, it's a very dark song that highlights how Peter sees the tensions rising in the band. He also highlights the hypocrisy of the British media. There are references to drugs and Carl being distant.
"Plan A" is actually a reference to Peter and Carl trying to get signed to a major label (rough trade). The "carve it into something" is a reference to sharpening their songs into something that will get them noticed. They saw what the strokes were doing in new york, then started making their music a little heavier, darker and edgier. Pretty sure i read that in Carl's book. Maybe its from an interview.
There's a clear shift from their earlier works on legs 11, to this song and skint and minted (which was recorded at at the same time as plan A). If you listen to SKint and minted, you'll notice the vocals have reverb and distortion over them. A similar effect that Julian uses.
This is actual how Peter envisioned their fist single "what a waster" sounding (with the distortion over the vocals). The producer stepped in and told them they sounded like shit.
You are right. It's in The Libertines Bound Together by Anthony Thornton, it might have been in Carl's book too, I haven't read it for quite a few years.

I love this band.
@thekillers1stfan regarding crack (lol) peter has also said, of carl, "he gave me my first pipe anyway..."
@bklmsoul it may be about cocaine powder but i'm pretty sure carl doesn't even do crack at all
@thekillers1stfan not to be pedantic, becuz if we are listening to this vid, then we have good taste, but there was NEVER a time that those TWO (pete AND carl) didnt like their crack. yes, crack. plus, the lyrics of the song suggest crack smoking (alone with his bone, hello?)
"While I smoke and shake alone at home
Chewing on my bone
Smash big boulders into stones
Till I don't need no bit of faith..."
big boulders into stones? the poet is saying he was smoking mad crack rocks.
@bklmsoul they wrote this song before Pete got involved with crack
prob the most terrifying song i can think of regarding the music bizz - crack paranoia plays a part, but all faustian bargains have basis in the cold iron of spilt blood?
@TheRealStalkers
heya mate... chords are just DM and A the whole way through other than the bit where it goes "tell me what do you see.."
then its F, DM, F, A
hope that helps!
(Actually it's Bb F Gm A)
carve it into something new!
