Lewis, Jerry Lee - Sunday Morning Coming Down Lyrics

Well, I woke up Sunday morning
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,
So I had one more for dessert.
Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt.
Then I washed my face and combed my hair
And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.

I'd smoked my mind the night before
With cigarettes and songs I'd been picking.
But I lit my first and watched a small kid
Playing with a can that he was kicking.
Then I walked across the street
And caught the Sunday smell of someone frying chicken.
And Lord, it took me back to something that I'd lost
Somewhere, somehow along the way.

On a Sunday morning sidewalk,
I'm wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
'Cause there's something in a Sunday
That makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothing short a' dying
That's half as lonesome as the sound
Of the sleeping city sidewalk
And Sunday morning coming down.

In the park I saw a daddy
With a laughing little girl that he was swinging.
And I stopped beside a Sunday school
And listened to the songs they were singing.
Then I headed down the street,
And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringing,
And it echoed through the canyon
Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday.

On a Sunday morning sidewalk,
I'm wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
'Cause there's something in a Sunday
That makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothing short a' dying
That's half as lonesome as the sound
Of the sleeping city sidewalk
And Sunday morning coming down.

Would love to visit that place😘also fascinated by the dancing, they appear very warm and welcoming people.

    H.... B....

Just hearing him? Wow!! Anyway he's from Faraday , Louisiana, that's the accent. His younger voice is much smoother than on this song, worth listening to!

    H.... B....

Happy Bird , I read your comment and have to tell you I agree. The best food, The best dancing, The most friendliest people. I guess you can tell this is my home state. Seriously I grew up in what’s known as the Cajun country and you don’t meet a stranger. You need to come visit. Actually I realize there are many places that you’ll find the same hospitality.

Written by Kris Kristofferson, first recorded in 1969 by Ray Stevens, then part of Kris' first album "Kristofferson" in 1970 and made a No 1 charts hit by Johnny Cash, also in 1970. Kris Kristofferson once said "This song was the reason why I could stop working for a living."

    great great version.!!!!!

  37. P.... B....

Heard many good versions - including all of Cash's. Not sure, but this may be the best. In any case, 'Mean Old Man' is a better album than 'Last Man Standing'.

    P.... B....

It is the best...and I do like Johnny Cash too.

    P.... B....

I loved JCs version, but Jerry Lee has killed it. Brilliant rendition from a brilliant talent.

    P.... B....

Kevin Eydmann THE KILLER nailed it, as usual... ❤️ #1

as good as any cover of this song i've heard, but i'm still lookin for that ONE that nails the words and emotion

    k.... ....

This is the ONE that your looking for

    k.... ....

It would be Jerry Lee when his voice is not rough like it is here. Usually he is so smooth and full of emotion.

  40. d.... ....

"Don't leave me in the twilight, 'cause twilight is the loneliest time of day ....."

    Great heart-felt version, Killer
