Levon Helm - Take Me To The River Lyrics

I don't know why I love you like I do
After all them changes that you put me through
You stole my money and my cigarettes
And I ain't seen hide nor hair of you yet

I wanna know, won't you tell me
Just tell me how, how could I stay here with you
Will you take me to the river and wash me down
Just take me to the river, put my feet back on the ground

I don't know why you treated me so bad
After all them good times that we could have had
Love is a notion that I can't forget
My sweet sixteen I will never regret

I wanna know, won't you tell me
Tell me how, how could I stay here with you
You gotta take me to the river and help 'em wash me down
Take me to the river and put my feet back on the ground

Love me, squeeze me, hold me and you can tease me
Until I can't take no more, no more, no more, no more

I just don't know why I love you like I do
After all them changes that you put me through
Your sixteen candles they burn on my wall
Now who's the biggest fool of us all

I wanna know, won't you tell me
Just tell me how, how could I stay here with you
Will you take me to the river and help 'em wash me down
Just take me to the river, put my feet back on the ground
Will you take me to the river and help 'em wash me down
Will you take me to the river, put my feet back on the ground

The man brought the soul to this song, yet, the horn section cloaked it all in gold

  24. w.... ....

    lol   happy happy

  25. A.... ....

You see Robbie, this is how to make music, even if it may be a cover, with  the kind of voice and delivery that you never had. And you had to go and ruin a good thing just when it had reached it's height of exposure and full potential  by breaking up The Band. Screw you. R.I.P. Levon and may god bless you for all the good that you brought your audience of listeners for over 50 years.

    A.... ....

+blatrug Usually I just make my comment and move on, ignoring what others might say but WOW, you were right on top of my comment, what, over 3 years later? Just F.Y.I., on YouTube if someone says something you disagree with, you call them on it within a couple months of their comment otherwise it makes you look pretty simple minded not being up with things. I mean 3+ years later? I'm honored as that's something of a record here. Lol!

    A.... ....

Please forgive me if I offended you. I apologize without reservation.

    A.... ....

  35. c.... c....

same boat man! they both have such different feels to them and they are both just amazing!

  36. D.... D....

Talking Heads is the version I always sailed by, but I may have to switch sails...I just can;t decide. Problems, problems....

  37. D.... H....

So good, I've been listening to Levon do this for decades

  38. E.... ....

Great voice. I saw him in concert twice and I'm glad.

  39. C.... L....

I had only ever heard the Foghat version but this one is great too.

  40. n.... ....

No - Levon's version and the TH version both came out in 1978.. I think Levon's beat there's by a couple months.

  41. n.... ....

And the TH version came out around the same time as Leon's... so not even an influence. They were both taking on a song that was already a hit by Green.

  42. d.... ....

Al Green and Mabon Hodges wrote this song. The Talking Heads made a cover...

  43. w.... r....

He was actually born in Elaine, AR but did live in the unincorporated area of Turkeyscratch, then he went on to graduate from Marvell high school, all of these are right near West Helena, AR....I am a big Levon Helm fan and grew up just about 2 hours straight north from where he grew up. Peace

    w.... r....

This man was for real! I love everything he puts his voice to. Such a talent.

  44. k.... ....

Another true music icon gone. RIP Levon, keep on rockin' it up in that big concert hall in Heaven. Love the horn arrangement and that soulful feel that Levon put into this song.

  45. d.... l....

so good, i listened to it twice

thanks for all your food music levon. rip

  46. l.... ....

    awesome man

  47. e.... t....

A great musician from turkeyscratch, Ark !
    RIP, Lev!

  48. s.... ....

Talking Heads did a good job with this song, however, the warmth and soul Levon puts into itis missing. RIP

  49. i.... ....

    Coz Levon Had soul!!!!

  50. R.... R....

Yeah but the world has won a great opportunity to learn what a great man he was. It goes both ways, and Levon would agree, I'm sure.

  51. R.... R....

What a voice! And he was drumming at the same time!

    Take me to the river!

  52. j.... ....

Levon Helm was a true talent... He will be missed. Thanks for posting.

  53. N.... L....

I agree - and get what you're saying exactly. This is simply great - complements, but neither exceeds nor subtracts from Reverend Green's original. (In that way, it reminds me of Creedence's classic remake of 'Heard it thru' the Grapevine..)

  54. m.... ....

The album is just called "Levon Helm." I think it came out around 82. Pretty sure the Talking Heads had already covered it by then but Levon's version is closer to the original. And credible, against the odds. (Nobody does Al Green like Al Green, full stop). Levon would do a cover just to say thanks for doing something inspiring. Just how he was. He gets the deadpan humor and the groove and ... this is really quite good. He also does a pretty cool version of Bill Withers' "Lean on Me."

  55. T.... ....

    Another great one...R.I.P.

  56. r.... ....

    R.I.P. Levon...

  57. P.... ....

He is playing with the angels now.

  72. E.... N....

I thought no one could touch the Talking Heads. I was way damn wrong.

    E.... N....

Both versions, and Al Green's original, are great. Which one I listen to just depends on my mood.

  73. s.... o....

I LOVE LEON!! Great to hear this again. If you don't move when you hear this- feel for a pulse. Too late, you're dead!

  74. s.... o....

  75. T.... M....

@mshereafter you must be nuts or deaf.

  76. w.... ....

@HeartMonger I second that emotion, Heartmonger--Levon was definitely the anchor in this fabulously talented group.

  77. H.... ....

No one knew the beat and the way of the music like Levon! He WAS "The Band" Though Rick, Garth, and the rest knew their S%#& as well. Levon was the soul. God Bless Levon!

  78. v.... ....

Oh yeah. I can just hear this coming out of a famous bar on Bourbon Street.
