Amazing how many people misunderstand the meaning of the song. Don't forget the Levellers are hippies! The song is about mother Earth. Since mother Earth is a queen, mother and mystical child, best friend and lover. When you 'come running to me', it really means 'come running to the land/country/high hill etc'. 'And he looked at the land through the tears in his eyes
For he knew that there were those who would will her to die' think about it, 'those who would will her to die' being people who don't care for the environment and are slowly killing the planet.

My man sent me this just now & we r SOULMATES 4 sure!! Waited 22/24 years 4 each other as we knew & connected b4 now! He nearly died few tears ago & at my cross roads we re connected for a chat spent 7 hours that night talking on the phone & 5s 6s 7s 8s hours ever since till he drove the 100 odd miles a couple weeks l8r 2 c me!!!! Wow that was something & i cried so 4 when he had to leave & he sent me this & i couldn't have said it better myself!!!! I believe in Jesus Christ as my Lord & Saviour he believes ever so slightly different which doesnt inc. Him being a Christian like me so he also sent me Into My Arms by Nick Cave b4 he drove down!!!! My wife died a year ago this month. Before she died I asked her if she would be around for my birthday. She promised she would be, but passed before it. Exactly a week before my birthday I came across this song. I’d never heard it before even though I’m a huge fan of the Levellers...very first time I heard it I cried my eyes out, and even now I can’t listen without getting tears.
There are things in the song she said to me almost word for word...until the day I go and see her again I will always believe that she sent me that song on my birthday to tell me she is there...

Went to the gig in the Philharmonic in Liverpool last night and they played this in their acoustic set. I've no shame admitting I actually cried. It was stupidly beautiful. His voice is a little bit rustier sounding these days and it genuinely added a hell of a lot to the song. Genuinely the best live experience I've ever had with music.

I saw the acoustic set at the Cropredy2018 festival last Friday night, Fangle Spangle. I've never really been a Levellers fan before but my experience was very much like yours. One of the most amazing and powerful live performances that I've ever seen, I will never forget it.

Get yourselves down to Beautiful Days, you'll find a festival full of like minded people. They play an acoustic set to open it, and a "normal" set to close. If you enjoyed one of their gigs imagine a festival they organise. Hope to see you there one time, you'll never stop going. X

Is this song based off the Norwegian folk story of peer gynt. These lyrics are direct references too henrik ibsens version of peer gynt. So cool!

I think it’s just an earthy song..... queen,mother ,mystical child,best friend ,lover ,wife for all time......all references to Mother Earth and how we’re destroying it

My song from when I was a boy going through a bad time wid my mam and dad violence drugs refugees and that I would to right a book on my past and this song remains me of life through a child's eyes x

I heard this song for the first time when I saw the Levellers for the first time in 21 years this year. I found this song utterly bewitching, and tried to find it online, but didn't know the title, I just kept searching the words 'Mystical Child', and I'm so glad to finally find this song today. I will have to get a copy of this as soon as possible.

The best song Levellers have ever done. Simon Friend is the most amazing song writer, musician & vocalist.
I followed the 97 tour when this album had just been released, & they had Eddi Reader as a guest on a few of the dates to sing this with them.

I completely agree : this is their best song. It's just the story of my own life...

He does a nice acoustic version too. But the album version is the best.

Are they really? How absolutely splendid.

I saw them last year (for the first time ever strangely), and have just bought tickets to see them again in october. When you see a set start with 'what a beautiful day', '15 years', and 'just the one' as their first three songs, you fear that they're going to start playing new stuff you've never heard of, but no, their back catalogue is so vast, that they can keep belting out classics all night long. Well worth the £12 for an evening of utter brilliance. 10 out of 10.

my wife and me followed this band since we first found them back in 88 on a tv station and they grew with us. we married in 85,  and I played this track at her funeral in 11.  thanks for being there levellers !!  this track means so much.

So sorry for your loss; this is a beautiful memorial for her and only makes the song more touching - may you be blessed.

This song is pure and honest. Each of us needs to remember that feeling of comfort and peace we get from nature and the land. If you feel stressed and out of place go sit on a hill or near a river and listen to this song, everything makes sense again.
