It's scary how much I relate to this... I have friends who do/did drugs and stuff and a "straight edge" friend who doesn't and I was in between I'd dappled with less strong drugs, I smoked and I could drink all my friends under a table and I was the one persecuted for it from both side, it caused massive fall outs. Also I relate to "this is way more important than that bullshit with Ben..." Because I went through a messy relationship and a guy Ben who was one of my best friends at the time was there to listen and help me through it except the guy I was with accused me of cheating on him with Ben and that was all bullshit and just damn relate to everything...

@DeathMiniHorse A lot of people who are "straighedge" don't start calling themselves that until people who aren't "straightedge" start calling them that because they can't relate or understand why they don't get fucked up all the time. So they have use a term to help them understand instead of realizing there is more than one way to live.

I'm Straight Edge because I've seen what alcohol and drugs do to people and make them act and lost family members from drugs/alcohol addictions. Sure, I get so much shit for "being a loser" because I don't destroy my body but I have always been fine with that because it's always been my choice and I've always lived by "Be yourself, fuck everyone else."

My question is, why does is it matter to you if someone else does or doesn't smoke or drink? I'm not straight edge (this song is first time even hearing of the term honestly), but I don't drink, smoke, or do any drugs.

I'm just a person who doesn't do any of those things because there's honestly no reason to do them at all. I don't do drugs for the same reason I don't watch sports, or listen to country music. They simply don't interest me and would provide me with no benefit whatsoever.

So my interpretation of the lyrics is that the mind set of both druggies and straightedge have ruined friendships. Which does happen a lot. I'm "straightedge" and I don't talk to about half the people I use to because it conflicted so much. Fuck subcultures, fuck mindsets, fuck friends.

"whether you got it in bed or you got it on your knees" definitely has nothing to do with prayer. he's talking about STD's, and "on your knees" means sucking dick. he's talking to all the girls that fuck his friends and spread, not only STD's, but diseases of the mind and heart.

i always thought of "or on your knees" as proposing.. talkin about how making love or love can kill you. i'dunno. 

I kinda figured "On your knees" had something to do with prayer by adopting a "holier than thou" sort of attitude towards people who used drugs. This would support the "fuck straight edge" phrase earlier in the verse.

I can not fathom why this was not clear to people...

People are all arguing over the meaning of one part of the song, look at it as whole.  think Its about losing friends and the bitter sweet feeling you can get when its there own fault...its a sad sad reality. I cant even imagine what Jason went through to write this.

@SilversteinRescue The term used to bother me too, but I guess it helped me identify with other people that were similar to me. Most of my favorite musicians are edge; Tim McIlrath, Davey Havok, Dan 'Soupy' Campbell, etc. They don't go around telling other people to be edge or try brag about it in any way though.

He isn't just talking about the girls that fucked his friends, he's talking about everyone. Obviously not everyone is going to die from an STD. Also, he sings a lot about religion throughout the song which was the reasoning for saying it could be about praying. And as a band, letlive. put reason and meaning behind almost everything they do musically; so I wouldn't say I was overthinking this.

I can try. I'm not sure but I think it might have a double meaning. The line before that is "To all the girls that make it a trend to fuck... all of my friends" so I think the line you asked about could be about getting a disease through unprotected sex or a blow job (on your knees) but I think on your knees might also be a reference to praying. Again I'm not sure and this is just what makes sense to me. If anyone actually knows the meaning of the line feel free to correct me.

I'm Straight Edge but I totally agree with Jason's message and opinion. I respect him and think highly of him. Straight Edge became more of a trend than something that people would look up to as their savior or whatever. It is the path I chose for myself and I would never tell anyone what to do. I'm seeing letlive. in 10 days and I can't wait for that night.

It's not just in the Hardcore punk scene. It's anyone who doesn't drink, smoke or do drugs. Being in a band and also straight edge becomes more difficult because you're exposed even more to that lifestyle.

Being 'Straight Edge' is supposedly being pure, so you're not allowed to sleep with a girl unless you're fully committed to her and shit like, it not just no drugs, its a stupid way of living, and in my opinion, boring as fuck. I claim edge, but i dont go putting sxe on everything. To me its more of a personal thing, i dont see myself as better than anyone, i made a personal choice and therefore it should remain personal. In my opinion straight edge now a days is moving towards an almost elitist mentality but at it's core it's about maintaining a positive outlook on life. I'm Straight Edge but I'm not an asshole. My friends who aren't and drink and do drugs know I'm Straight Edge. And they respect me because I respect them and don't hate on them. They know it's a personal decision and respect it. They know I'm alright if they do it. They know not to offer my any because of my Straight Edge belief. and they know if they need help when shit happens, I'm the only sober person sometimes that can think in certain situations.

Some might take it further as to become Vegan, Vegetarian, abstain from caffeine, soda and/or even prescription drugs and pain killers. Straight Edge is not a set of rules, but more like guidelines.

I honestly came to this video to defend straight edge . But then i came to realization the majority of straight edge kids are hxc assholes. It sorta sucks that i know very few straight edge kids that do it because they dont want to poison themselves with drugs or alcohol . They just do it cause its " Cool " or they want to " Fit in ".
