Les Miserables Cast - The Final Battle Lyrics

[Army officer:]
You at the barricade listen to this
The people of Paris sleep in their beds
You have no chance, no chance at all
Why throw your lives away?

[Enjolras:]
Let us die facing our foes
Make them bleed while we can

[Combeferre:]
Make 'em pay through the nose

[Courfeyrac:]
Make 'em pay for every man!

[Enjolras:]
Let others rise to take our place
Until the earth
Is free!

Fun fact when I went and saw this play one of the students tripped next to me and his gun went off scared the crap out of me and my mom. ( we were sitting next to the stairs that they come out of for the scene and he tripped. he chuckled and continued )

  4. G.... ....

The SFX on those cannons are pretty weak. A soft "boomph", and a big puff of splinters on the barricade. In reality, the sound of those cannons would've shattered windows and near-deafened everyone present. Sections of the barricade would've been flung backwards with each shot, as if hit by a car, filling the air with wooden shrapnel.
Cannons like those made castles obsolete, so a ramshackle barricade made of furniture would be no protection at all.

  5. T.... S....

In Musical Comedies, it always made me laugh to see that when someone announces something serious (or a threat to you), they tell you by singing.
It is as if a boss announces that he is firing you but sang about it. I think I would not stop laughing.

  10. A.... O....

Javert is often portrayed as the bad guy of the story.
I'm French, so I got to read "Les Miserables", one of the masterpiece of Victor Hugo during school (I think I was twelve at the time). We studied deeply the story and the characters. Javert is a man of duty and honor, and a way deeper character than people who hadn't read the book tend to believe. You really get to understand him during the Javert's dilemma scene. In this scene, that I found out to be pretty well done in the movie, you see Javert questioning his life choices, who he is and what should he do concerning Jean Valjean, who just spared his life. On one side, his duty. He is a man of the law. Jean Valjean is a criminal. He has to arrest him. That is how he always behaved and how he is. On the other, can he really still chase an absolute god that had mercy on him after years of being tracked down? Javert just can't go that far, even if concerning the law it is the right thing to do. Therfore, he decudes to jump in the Seine river, to commit suicide.
Javert is indeed an antagonist, but not a bad person. He is a deep character that Victor Hugo used wonderfully to criticize french justice of his time. Pay respect to javert, he was just doing his job. (btw I'm like a 15 years old french boy I don't know if my english is on point...)

Anyone else just like to pause it at 0:45 and pretend they win?

  14. C.... L....

Why is no one talking about 2:39-2:46? That part kills me every time. It really feels like they’ve given up and they’re clinging to each other like at least we die together.

  15. s.... ....

What Hong Kong students thinks they're like.

    s.... ....

They are just greater than people in the film.

    s.... ....

@kim trong nguyen I agree, they are all idiots.

  16. B.... M....

The decision to change the tone of the soldier's plea to the students ("You at the barricades...") from the quick staccato sound of the musical to this almost spoken version is easily my favorite part of this film.

  17. L.... L....

oh plz, canon is not that weak

  18. L.... G....

Pretty sure the director told Hadley to "not sing too well" so that he wouldn't stand-out so much from all the mediocre vocalists in the film.

  19. D.... D....

I know its a musical but unless its a great song I just can't take them seriously when they sing. They're literally just talking but in song form.

  20. M.... B....

So ended the June Rebellion of 1832. It would be 16 years until the next revolution, the Revolution of 1848, which would depose King Louis Phillippe and bring about the short lived 2nd Republic, which would become the 2nd French Empire in a few short years, under Emperor Napoleon III. He would rule over France until the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 brought about his downfall and the rise of the 3rd Republic and, consequently, the German Empire, a united Germany under Otto Von Bismarck.

omg class fight from Melanie Martinez

  22. m.... r....

Who fuck got the idea of the singing ?!

  23. A.... G....

Some historical context to this scene: It depicts the June Rebellion or Paris Uprising of 1832. It occurred during a particularly tumultuous period of French history; after the bloodshed and failure of the Revolution, the dissolution of the First Republic and the disastrous wars of Napoleon Bonaparte, France as a country was bankrupt, poor, and struggling under an anemic economy due to heavy trade restrictions imposed by Britain and its allies after Bonaparte’s defeat. A minor wing of the Bourbon family were restored as France’s monarchy and were keen on peeling back many of the civil liberties and constitutional reforms enacted since the Revolution.

Louis Philippe I was that last of the Bourbon monarchs to ever rule France, and his reign was unpopular amongst lower classes who suffered under his government’s corruption and mismanagement, and who saw him as little more than a foreign puppet. (His invasion of Algeria wasn’t too popular neither.) At the time of the uprising he had been power for barely two years. A big cholera epidemic had just devasted Paris, killing both one of his biggest supporters, Casimir Perier (his Prime Minister), and one of his biggest critics, Gen. Jean Lamarque (A hero of the Napoleonic Wars and popular reformer). Student protestors hijacked Lamarque’s funeral cortege and lead it to the Place du Bastille, where the original Revolution had started more than 3 decades ago.

There followed two days of rioting and urban insurrection, during which 93 insurrectionists and 73 National Guardsmen were killed, and hundreds more wounded, though some historians dispute those numbers, saying its possible many more who were poor and thus unaccounted for were killed in the fighting, their bodies hidden away by their families to avoid connection with the rebellion.

Eventually, Louis Philippe I’s popularity waned and he himself was forced to abdicate in 1848, establishing the Second Republic which in turn did not last very long.

Probably the most beautifully shot, directed and acted scene in the movie, the gradual diminution of their resistance on the barricade is harrowing, and I always get choked up when Grantaire joins Enjolras to die together as best mates.

  47. D.... N....

Still feel very empty as the June Rebellion lasted 2 days. Enjolras died for freedom, yet it was so pointless as no revolution nor rebellion happened after June Rebellion

  64. B.... ....

Seeing Jean Valjean carrying Gavroche away is truly heartbreaking. They kept the young boy there that whole time.

“Make then pay for every man.”
That line hits hard to. He was talking about little Gavroche. He was going to adopt him after the Revolution. But neither of them made it out alive. The whole time he was like the little boy’s father, always by his side and always supporting him and protecting him in a way his parents never did. When he died, it was obvious he was devastated. There were even man consulting him as if he had lost his son. Yeah that made me real sad.

Which song on the soundtrack has the part where the general and enjolras sing?

    P.... D....

It's known as 'The Final Battle'.

  69. S.... B....

I think people tend to greatly misunderstand Javert’s character.

He is a man of the law, as he describes himself. Just like someone who is a man of the Bible would. He follows the law and has no room for all else. This doesn’t make him a bad man, but it does slightly blind him.

He begins to realize this when he sees his people laid in a mess of bodies, while the others are laid neatly and respectfully in a line. It hasn’t fully hit though, and the anger will boil when he sees a criminal. At this point, I believe he realizes the “rebels” weren’t criminals, after all. They saw things a certain way, as did he. Javert also recognizes all of their courage in fighting for what they believe in.

This is why he gave Gavroche his pin - because he recognizes his bravery and honor.

Javert was a man stuck in his ways, but this doesn’t make him a villain. This makes him what we all are - human.

    S.... B....

"This doesn’t make him a bad man, but it does slightly blind him". Ok, that is exactly the reason why this scene is perfect. For men like Javert law is a mean, not a purpose, he believed that blindly following the law he would have made the world (France in his case) a better place, because he was doing as God wanted. But then he was shocked by Valjean sparing him when he was certain he would have killed him, and began to think. It's possible he also had some "theological issue", like "how can this man always escape me, like if God itself protected him. Now he has saved me, can it be he really have God by his side?" After that, he sees Gavroche body, a child who accepted to die for a cause, to make the world a better place. He and Javert had more things in common than we could think, event the fact that Javert himself comes from the gutters, but of course decided to follow a different path. The fact that just moments later we see him let Valjean go with Marius, while he was finally in his hands makes all this inside struggle even clearer, so giving Gavroche his pin was the thing he would have done

    S.... B....

Also, Javert's world is very black and white. He believes that a man is either good or bad. There is no in-between for him. That's why he doesn't believe that Valjean could ever have any redemption. And that's why he kills himself in the end. Valjean, a man he was so sure was bad, saved his life. It completely shattered his world, the way he viewed everything. When he saw all of the dead rebels, he was sad and confused. They were innocent, and fighting for what they thought was right. Javert giving up his metal, along with representing his realization that they were brave, evil in the name of law but good in the name of justice, was also a symbol for him giving up the world he knew.
This new world scared him. He didn't know where his morals lied. He spent his whole life bringing down the law upon criminals, but they might not have been fully evil. Javert masked his insecurities of being born by criminals by hiding behind his good-or-bad facade, and now he was vulnerable and weak.
That is why Javert killed himself. He couldn't bear the thought of criminals being good. Of Valjean being good.

  77. .... ....

For anyone who is struggling with life. I wanted to kill myself last year. It felt like I had demons in my brain manipulating my mind. I couldnt think clearly. I couldnt choose my thoughts they were being put into me. Everyday it got worse. I barely ate, barely slept, I was dying. My brain hurt, I was constantly getting light headed. The world didn't look the same anymore. It didnt matter how anything looked even if it was beautful, everything looked like hell but I didnt want it to. I wanted to help people, I always have but there was a constant opposition that wasnt coming from me, I couldn't fix my mind. I was afraid to trust God but I knew if I listened everything would be okay.

I failed two semesters of college because of this. One of the few friends I had died and because of this problem I couldnt be the brother he always was to me while he was alive. Then my nephew got a really bad sickness. If he would have died I would have died. At the time I felt like I failed alot of people, because I did and I felt like I had failed him, I didn't feel like I deserved to live. It didnt feel right. I tried to fix my mind so I could do better in this life but it only got worse. God healed my nephew from a disease that should have killed him. Real authentic bible following Christians prayed in the name of Jesus and my nephew was healed. Even the doctor asked us if we believed in God because he said my nephew was alive by some miracle. I didnt kill myself because my nephew survived. I kept going but my mind was still messed up. I kept letting people down.

Eventually I got fed up with myself. I got to the point that I didn't care what happened to me. I disregarded myself completely for the sake of others. Even though my mind was absolute hell I read the bible, I prayed and trusted God.
The more time I spent with God the less, worry, hate, anger and paranoid I got. I learned to love people that I had no reason to love. I dont want to hurt people.
The only reason I still do mma is for my coach that got killed. The last thing he told me before he died was that he couldnt wait to see me in mma, I feel like I have to fight, I know he didn't die for nothing, it wont be for nothing. Eventually my mind was free from all that hell, it took awhile only because I had a real hard time trusting in God but once I just let go and trusted God no matter what I became free from all that mental hell. I have mental clarity now. I have peace, I can breathe. I know alot of things in life dont make sense sometimes but I promise you there is life in Jesus. All of you matter. Dont listen to anyone who tells you that you dont. You are more than significant. theres a guy named dan mohler on youtube that explains the gosple of Christ very well, Look up Dan Mohler- what is our purpose

  78. S.... K....

For some reason, even though, this is the "final battle", most of the rebels died and there appear to not be much winners.

    S.... K....

Actually the army won, this is loosely based on a small revolt that happened after napoleon bonaparte.

  79. E.... M....

When Aaron starts singing... my god, that is the best 15 seconds of this movie. "Let others rise to take our place until the Earth is free!"

    E.... M....

    omg yes

    E.... M....

    Fucking _yes._

  80. B.... ....

This is so powerful; "...let others rise to take out place until the Earth is free."

    B.... ....

Yeah, I agree. A lot of people are talking about how powerful it was when Javert gives his medal to Gavroche, but I think this other bit is more stirring. They know they're going to die, they've decided then and there that they're going to become martyrs even though there's no chance that their specific uprising is itself going to succeed. They realise, and decide, basically on the spot, that they're going to not just _risk_ their lives but actually go to their deaths _deliberately._ The willingness with which they allow their _own_ lives to be consumed in the struggle for freedom is verging on horrifying, but the nobility of their ideal ultimately makes it a moment of sublime dignity and heroism.

  81. W.... W....

    C.... H....

@Paul-Napoléon Calland yes for the French its the highest honor other nations have other honors such as the medal of honor USA or victora cross Britain

    C.... H....

@Cadet Johnson Britain isn't a nation ;) My point was that the Legion of Honour is the highest CIVIL and military honour. Most countries give different distinctions according to the field in which they're awarded, e.g. the Victoria Cross which is solely a military distinction, but the Legion of Honour, and distinctions inspired by it, are the highest award in all the areas in which the persons receiving it have served the State, and the people (or peoples) of the State that awards it.

*« The Legion of Honour was the property of everyone who was an honour or an ornament to their country, was at the head of their profession, or contributed to her prosperity or to her glory… If ever, from aristocratic feelings, a medal was instituted to reward the soldier, or if ever the civil order were deprived of it, it will be the Legion of Honour ».* Note dictated to General Bertrand at Saint Helena by Emperor Napoleon.

When Javert gave Gavroche his medal. Dammit, eyes, I don’t need water!

  91. K.... C....

SO many mixed feelings about this film, but this, this is one the most touching scenes Ive seen in a movie, period. Can bash it all you want this was a well shot film with gorgeous moments.

Gavroche’s eyes are closed when Valjean carried him.

So this is how it endw huh...?

  95. E.... W....

So you know how Javert gives Gavroche his medal, I saw a very interesting comment suggesting he’d only gotten that medal the same morning.
Notice that he isn’t wearing his normal police outfit, also why only now would Javert be wearing his medals in public. He’s only just gotten it and now he realises he doesn’t deserve a medal for causing the deaths of a bunch of basically children who were fighting for their freedom

    E.... W....

    FunnyMadd Games

And Gavroche, he HATED Javert. It’s shown more in the musical and book but Javert practically pushes the young boy around like trash, and he hated it. They were made to be polar opposites, Javert being order and strictness, and Gavroche being fun and almost childlike. When he sees all of the dead bodies, especially the young boy’s, he finally hits him of what he has done. You know, the death of Gavroche is one of the many actions Hugo takes to make you HATE Javert just as much as little Gavroche does. It was practically his fault they were all dying. And when you see him give the young boy a medal, it makes you step back and think about who Javert really is.

    E.... W....

FunnyMadd Games actually Javert did not just receive the medal. You can see him wearing it during One Day More.

    E.... W....

@7mwM Mike J. Marziliano it's all on the same day though no?

    E.... W....

Michelle Hamaoui I think One Day More happens the evening before the day at the barricade. Since the barricade scene starts during the day.

    E.... W....

I actually think it's out of character for Javert to give Gavroche his medal. The point of Javert's character is that he's supposed to be remorseless and unsympathetic, but not actually a bad person. Javert is against the rebellion because they're essentially a terror cell within the city. He might feel bad that Gavroche died, but - as i see it - he would've blamed Gavroche for siding with the rebels. He certainly wouldn't give him a medal.

Javert has an unflinching, black/white view of morality, and that view is derived from the law. According to Javert, anyone who breaks or defies the law is total scum. If Javert was prepared to hunt down Valjean for decades for petty theft, attempted jailbreak, and the violation of his parole, what would he think of "terrorists"?

Remember that this attitude is only challenged after Valjean spares his life, and Javert reconsiders his moral outlook. Valjean displaying virtue violates Javert's ethical foundation, because - according to his beliefs - a criminal was an inherently evil person with no redeeming qualities. Valjean had proven that wanted criminals could be virtuous, which caused Javert to question the morality of persecuting Valjean just because he had once committed a crime.

Don't mistake this for him personally forgiving Valjean, however. Javert didn't kill himself out of guilt, per se, but because he had made a promise with God to arrest Valjean or die trying. Because Javert had a moral epiphany which made him reconsider the morality of continuing to hunt down Valjean, he no longer felt morally justified in trying to arrest him. However, abandoning his "mission" would be breaking his oath with God, which Javert found unacceptable. Because Javert had promised to "arrest Valjean or die", the only option left to him was suicide.

So yeah, as i see it, Javert didn't give a damn about Gavroche. Assuming that he was moved by Gavroche's death detracts from the way one is supposed to view his character (that is, unsympathetically), and also detracts from the gravity of his epiphany later on.

Hadley Fraser's portrayal of the general, I find really interesting because the sound of his voice and the look in his eyes, it's like he's not trying to be intimidating but almost pleading with the students to back down because he doesn't want to kill them

They're men of the National Guard. The organization that was not only founded after the first French Revolution, but would eventually participate on the side of the revolutionaries in 1848, the one that ended the monarchy for good.

The National Guard's organization meant that it was always made up of middle-class members of the Third Estate, even during the Restoration. Not many of those people loved the monarchy, he was maybe even somewhat sympathetic to their cause.

    I.... D....

And Hadley Fraser had an advantage here in he understood the story from the other side. He got his start playing Marius on stage in the West End of London.
