Megane Lauzer ok, but “REALLY trained” is a pretty imprecise statement. If they have to have graduated from Juilliard than that standard is partly economic and greatly unfair. Also, musical singing training isn’t any different than regular singing training to actors. Out of the main cast, and not including guest stars, I believe only Allie Boe is classically trained, which is a legitimate higher level of training but the original cast had a similar percentage of actors who were as so trained.

@Jordan Peters Most of them are Broadway singers, do you think that's not a fair vocal training to be a good singer? Your point doesn't make sense whatsoever. Lea Salonga was theatrically trained as these singers too. She was from Les Mis old cast

Santiago my point was so were most of the film cast. There are 3 people, besides the Thénardiers, in the film cast who do not have professional stage experience... Russell, Amanda & Anne, though Anne had a lot of schooling and did some theatre. Stephen Sondheim always says he will take the strong actor who can sing over the strong singer who can act any day and I don’t dare argue with Mr. Sondheim.

@7 I know that Eddie is without a doubt a good actor, and I don't want to critizize that. I just feel that the main cast in a musical film should be able to perform the songs as well as act them, and for me Eddie didn't check that box. I would have preferred Aaron, because although he is a stage actor, he knows the material and is able to perform it in his sleep... but then again, they cast Russel Crowe...

Great actor but yes, his singing was shite. Then after repeated listens, his singing grew on me. His singing is as chaotic as his character's personality. Just like Russel's singing, Javer has more unpleasantness to his personality but the you also can't help but appreciate the pleasant parts.
Also, a good chunk of the cast aren't really Broadway level singers. So.

I'd be more than happy to listen to a good singer displaying their characters personality than a bad one. You are right, many aren't Broadway level singers, no one else in the cast though are Russel level singers :P
When he starts to sing the fourth wall comes crumbling down, I find i'm no longer carried away by the moment but forcibly reminded Russell is in the movie and should not be. If it were him singing at home with a few beers around a BBQ I'd be all for it, but not in a multi million dollar musical with the grandiose nature of Les Misérables! Just ruined it for me.

I still think Samantha Barks would have been the perfect Belle in the Beauty and the Beast live action adaptation.
She resembles Disney's animated Belle more closely (in my opinion) who had more rounder features than Emma Watson and actually comes from a musical background.
I will continue to bitch about not having her as Belle until they do another remake AND GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME

Russell’s rhythm was off but that’s fixed easily, which he did. His tone is rich and full and he sounds GREAT

In the movie Russell Crowe played the part visually and acting wise really well. His singing however was TERRIBLE. If they had dubbed Phillip Quast over Crowes singing it would have worked better. Almost all the singing voices except for Fantine and Eponine and of course the Bishop, were poor.

7 I think they could have chosen better singers personally since it is still a musical even though it’s a film as well, but agree to disagree. Alfie Boe has such an incredible range as Jean Valjean so in comparison to Jackman, it’s difficult for me to think of his voice as excellent. I thought his rendition of Bring Him Home was very underwhelming.

7 I mean not everyone is gonna have the same opinions though. I love broadway and classically-trained singers and I felt like his voice was pretty grating and bothersome and didn’t fit jean valjean’s character at all 🤷🏻‍♀️ but if you liked it that’s great.
