Leonard Cohen - The Goal Lyrics

I can't leave my house
Or answer the phone
I'm going down again
But I'm not alone

Settling at last
Accounts of the soul
This for the trash
That paid in full

As for the fall, it
Began long ago
Can't stop the rain
Can't stop the snow

I sit in my chair
I look at the street
The neighbor returns
My smile of defeat

I move with the leaves
I shine with the chrome
I'm almost alive
I'm almost at home

No one to follow
And nothing to teach
Except that the goal
Falls short of the reach

    Smile of defeat..

The truth in it's purest form. Thank you Leonard and rest in peace, you lyrics are your legacy

  3. P.... D....

This is overwhelmingly sad, and yet it is a great man’s perspective on the limitations of the flesh, that there is a time to be born and a time to die, and boy did he sing us through right to the very end. Goodbye old friend, you were quite simply ‘the best’ 🇮🇪🇮🇪

So profound it hurts. I absolutely agree that this is the real winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature.

  8. k.... ....

    if the goal
falls short of the reach, does that mean you reach your goal?

    k.... ....

No, it means the opposite. The goal is further away from what we can reach.

  9. E.... C....

Thanx GOD! This lyrics are killing me!

  10. S.... H....

No word to describe my heart... ♡

  11. D.... B....

I received my cd today!!! So Leonard!! So awesome!!!

  12. F.... S....

    With stars bright above me
    And the lanterns in front
I lean on the porch gate
And I wait for the storm

    The dust in the air
Is like smoke on the streets
    Your dance like a fragrance
    Greets my memory

As I stretch out my hand
For a breath of your dawn
It is gone like a light
And the night will be long

    Some infinite daydreams
    Cover me like a coat
    They remind me of sunrise
    Keep me warm and alone

    The dry grass is thirsty
    The rainfall is late
    Yet the river is frozen
    The odds are betrayed

And me at the porch gate
I make love to the sound
Of your laughter in my mind
    And the silence so loud

  16. A.... D....

Why you gotta do me like this L. Cohen.

  17. J.... A....

Congratulations. This event makes me no less proud and happy for having made the world's first and only sculpture of Mr. Cohen as a present to the City of Vilnius. Lithuania was the home of his ancestors. And it is a magnificent piece of art as it captures so much of the humble and sincere person he was in my eyes. Go see it!

    J.... A....

A most deserving tribute. Thank you. The sculpture by the late Romualdas Kvintas, which I have only seen online, seems, indeed, to capture much of Leonard Cohen's essence.

  18. E.... B....

I miss this precious artist in our days, unique all the way the decades before and in the future!💎

  34. A.... R....

........... except that the goal falls short of the reach ...................

why are they always so difficult to unravel his lyrics?

Is he saying that there is no need to go too far because the goal - fulfilment of one's destiny is nearer than one thinks? Or even maybe that he had the ability to go further, his reach was more, but he was actually not asked to go this far?

    A.... R....

AAH thank you for your concise, precise explanation . Both of your reactions though seemingly contradictory ring true.

    A.... R....

He reverts the more usual "the reach falls short of the goal". So we could maybe interprete as: there is no greater meaning or great goal to life. All the reaching we do has no higher purpose/goal. Maybe he wants to teach to just live in the moment as that is all there is?

I also like your first interpretation, that everyones goals is reachable.

  35. E.... K....

Leonard - so sincere & bright! You poetry & velvet voice will never die ...

  38. R.... B....

I feel sadness for myself because I will never ever be as good a poet as Cohen.

    R.... B....

Don't worry, that's true for probably everyone. As Cohen himself put it: "Just because you can't write like Shakespeare that doesn't mean you shouldn't be writing."

  39. .... ....

    🙄💖💖 great!

  40. O.... D....

never fails to send shivers down my spine

  41. F.... E....

I loved him and miss him too. I agree with Jarias B. that he deserves the Nobel Prize; perhaps in Poetry.

    F.... E....

Poetry is part of Literature. And the prize should be given not to the best literature work but to the work that has done the best to humankind. That Cohen did.

Gorgeous lyrics. Thanks for sharing. 🙂🎸

  48. T.... C....

...."Indeed that the goal falls short of the reach" yet I have not heard any one reaching so far .the nobel will come too..

    T.... C....

'except that the goal falls short of the reach' - it is advice . That the goal lies not just within reach but way within reach - that to whoever this is addressed , they are well capable of achieving their destiny. That is the way I read it.

And only the living are awarded the Nobel prize - those are the rules.

Leonard forever <3 I miss him.
Thanks to Adam for creating this.

  52. S.... K....

I never had a song go straight to my heart and soul like this one did. It was as if Mr. Cohen looked straight to the inside of me and wrote what I have not been able to. Even after passing, he is still making an impact on the world.

  53. M.... ....

    I love you.

  54. D.... O....

The goal falling short of the reach means that one can reach/achieve more than their goals.

    D.... O....

Or that our goals, as we conceive them, don't go far enough, are not great or fine enough.

  55. D.... O....

    A true national treasure 🇨🇦

Thanks for this divine Cohen channel.Nobody can write poetry like Cohen. I have a channel for my cohen tribute band called St.Lawrence band. You are Welcome to check it out 😊🕊

  57. L.... A....

He crecido escuchando su maravillosa voz, cada disco más profunda y más expresiva.
Nunca entendí nada de lo que cantaba, pero a pesar de todo me transmitía absolutamente todo.
    Te echamos de menos Leonard

    L.... A....

    L.... A....

Sobre el deseo de entender Cohen escribió un poemma que traducido dice lo siguiente. Me parece genial.

As I lie here beside my dying husband I listen to this poem over and over and I wonder how much time I have left with him. Will he make it through the winter? Isn't it selfish of me to want him to? Yes. I need to learn to let go. 💔

    M.... D....

Moon dancer my sincere deepest sympathies to you, your family & friends at the loss of your husband, thinking of you all at this very difficult time. You had a special bond & you will meet again, he will be with you in spirit. Soft hugs
