Leonard Cohen - Iodine Lyrics
I needed you, I knew I was in danger
of losing what I used to think was mine
You let me love you till I was a failure,
You let me love you till I was a failure --
Your beauty on my bruise like iodine
And though I failed at love, was this a crime?
You said, Don't worry, don't worry, darling
You said, Don't worry, don't you worry, darling
There are many ways a man can serve his time
You covered up that place I could not master
It wasn't dark enough to shut my eyes
So I was with you, O sweet compassion
Yes I was with you, O sweet compassion
Compassion with the sting of iodine
Your saintly kisses reeked of iodine
Your fragrance with a fume of iodine
And pity in the room like iodine
Your sister fingers burned like iodine
And all my wanton lust was iodine
My masquerade of trust was iodine
And everywhere the flare of iodine

Iodine is a chemical element with symbol I and atomic number 53. The heaviest of the stable halogens, it exists as a lustrous, purple-black non-metallic solid at standard conditions that sublimes readily to form a violet gas. The elemental form was discovered by the French chemist Bernard Courtois in 1811. It was named two years later by Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac from this property, after the Greek ἰώδης "violet-coloured".
This song touches my soul.
My favorite Cohen song since I first heard it in college.
Leonard Cohen was pure genius I can listen to him all day into the night and just keep playing his music! The idea that he is gone has been a bitter pill!
smäktande iodine
Very Lennon. Love it.
I really love this song. Also love Memories from the same album. They are both in my top 10 Cohen songs. But with the exception of Paper-Thin Hotel, I genuinely hate every other track on this album
i dont know how i Feel about this song because i have to think about bowies prettiest star when i hear this

Atlantic drift is the sickest crew ever
Goddamn that sax is one of the most intense sounds I've ever heard, cuts to a deep place inside.
Just one of the most bizarre, and brilliant pieces of work. It's just a stumbling, groping, cacophonous mess. I'm in love with it
this is a great song to get peevd to x
Top Kek chorehalf nix pukka

Probably my favorite L.Cohen song. Lyrics and music! perfect vibe
My favorite tooooo
I bought this record in the 70-ties, my youth
''I asked you if a man could be forgiven, and though I failed at love was this a crime?? You said 'Don't worry. Don't worry, darling. There are many ways a man can serve his time.''' I love that...
So long, Laughing Len. I think someone should do a mashup of this and Bowie's The Prettiest Star!
good ear brother
then and now, Brilliant!
I like the saxes in the background, but the upfront percussion is annoying. All these Spector bells and whistles are just not adding any ambiance to the Leonard Cohen genius: his words. It's like too much sugar in coffee. You taste all the sweetness and none of the brew. Leonard doesn't have that type of voice -- that soaring Bobby Rydell commercial voice. I think it was just a record company ploy to get two famous names on that record. I preferred Phil's work on The Beatles' "Let It Be" album. Although The Beatles, themselves, weren't happy with the final results, Phil's production was far better on that than this mess. Too bad, the album has its moments -- that's why I still listen to these songs from time to time and wish certain things weren't there.
Death of a Ladies' Man is a cult album. Cohen's diehard fans were confused at best and horrified at worst when it was released. Cohen himself was quoted as saying this was the album of his that all of the punk rock fans liked the best
I guess the mess, is just what makes it such a unique song and album. Is what makes me like it so much, but you have your point. Best regards
I couldn't disagree more. Death of a Ladies Man is the greatest record of Cohen's career. I know he hated it, and I understand why: he saw himself as a poet, and this is not poetry. This is lascivious, exhausted, staggering, pulp. It's the greatest songwriter of his era as a tired, shitty lounge singer. And never in music history has there been a greater marriage form and function. This record physically manifests the world weariness, the abject disillusionment, of Cohen's darkest, most voyeuristically thrilling songs. It's a masterpiece.
This is the coffee you taste but it tastes like oranges and alcohol and you dont know whats in it but you realize its never gonna exist again. And you remember it.
@Aaron Schafer Bingo.
The Prettiest Star.
HarrySbarking my first thought
can you climb that wall of sound and see what's behind ?
Aha! There's the question! Cohen was NOT a fan of this album. Spector's Wall of Sound ruined this record.
Most of it, but this song's a gem. Just because here Leonard's voice is not drowned out by the wall of sound! Had he done the same in the other songs it would have been another masterpiece. Shame!
Sure it is.
Great song, Leonard is awesome!
Phil Spector is a genius! Controller, eccentric maybe, but a genius! Probably the best music producer of the world, no doubt about that!

I fell in love with this song in late 70s - didn't keep me from living the song for real for a whole decade anyway.
why doesn't he play it now...
I suppose because it requires a "young & angry" approach he feels he has no more?
keith usher L. C. said he hated every of his own songs Spector produced.
*Kiitos*
I can hear Patsy Cline.
Your beauty... on my BRUISES... lke Iodine. Seriously, there are just a few verses like these in all literature. Evoé, Mr. Cohen! Greetings from Brazil!
