Leon Russell - The Ballad Of Mad Dogs And Englishmen Lyrics

Let me see here…

Kids, planes, runway strikes
Flashy pimps and family fights
Spotted dogs, blood-shot eyes
Our space captain laughs and tries

To understand the scheme of things
But just in time the scene has changed
The bus is here, bring the beer
Sherman's reading Shakespeare

Movie makers, boobie shakers
And Saxy airplane ticket takers
Union members
Leo Fender's pride and joy - electric toy

Teachers, learners, incense burners
Religious leaders and chronic bleeders
Thieves and pirates on a ride
It's a hippie commune bonafied

Life and time, war death dealers
Rock pop correspondence fever
But Okies and Limeys, curtain climbers
Stones and future Dominoes

Know which way the wind blows
Stolen cola no one knows
The shadow do
But it's still a shady crew

'Cause I love her, and she loves you
Just myself and forty friends
In the name of Cocker power

Out here on the road again
With Mad Dogs and Englishmen

The first rock concert I ever went to, as a 15 year-old in San Diego, CA in 1971 was part of the, "Leon Russell and The Shelter People" tour, with Freddie King & Buddy Miles as opening acts. Tickets were $4.50. It was absolutely unforgettable. R.I.P. Leon, Freddie & Buddy.

One of the coolest and most sublime songs I know. It's been with me as long as I can remember back to teen years in the early 70's. Leon's music feels just like a part of me. Thanks, brother.

Just heard of the passing of another legend with the death of Leon Russell on Nov 13th. I still have this album and vividly recall when Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen with Leon Russell wa screened in Perth (still have that album too). 2016 has been a bad year for losing legends!

  24. R.... ....

The greatest live concert I've ever seen. What a talent!

    P.... E....

Yes! It really was something spectacular. Nothing comparable. I saw their very first show in Detroit and it is one of my favorite memories. That was when I first fell in love with Leon. You couldn't help coming under his spell.

Joe Cocker died 22 December 2014 and Leon Russell is still hanging in there. Leon Russell was the producer and leader of the "Mad Dogs & Englishmen" tour and the unequaled "Master of Space and Time." When the doctors opened his chest the other day, did they look for a second heart?

  39. P.... G....

He had a heart attack today. Say a little prayer for Leon.

  40. M.... A....

dedicated to my best friend Cindy who passed 5 years ago I love you I wish you were here the song always reminds me of you

  43. B.... ....

    great...great...great

  44. L.... V....

awesome. my favorite song of all time.  great. no other words for it.

  45. B.... F....

The absolute best!   I'd love to see him live again. It's been a while.  Just don't feel the music with most other like you do listening to Leon.  Man, just so underrated.  Thanks, Leon!

    B.... F....

Only underrated by people who didn't know him, though I know what you mean: He wasn't a great rock god like so many others--especially others with maybe half his talent. But he was a giant in the industry and rock music was fortunate that he wound up on our team. Check out Elton John's induction speech for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You might shed a tear or two.

    B.... F....

Yeah, that was pretty cool. I used to love Elton John, too but he went over to the other side somewhere in the middle of Yellow Brick Road. Got commercial on me. Never much cared for his music after that. I did appreciate that he helped put Leon back in the limelight a little.

  46. c.... m....

    Thanks Leon

  47. N.... ....

Our Oklahoma Son, We Love You, You've made us the richest people on earth. Thank You..........A boy from Jenks America

  49. g.... s....

I have said in many places on YT that Leon Russell is one of my personal heroes and my absolute favorite song writer. Godspeed to you, Sir. May you live forever..

  50. G.... M....

My friends and I love to reminisce bout things we can't remember, lol. And Leon taught us how to live and love the way we should. Never treat a brother like a passing stranger, always try to keep that love light burning.

  51. c.... w....

sooo many wonderful memories attched to your music. thanks for being a big part of who i am today. i love you!

  52. A.... o....

I've loved you all my life, Leon Russell. You have brought me so much happiness.

  53. B.... ....

    RIP Joe!

  54. F.... F....

    orchestration, oh yah

  55. J.... M....

Another thing. Most do not know that Leon (CB) put together many songs by himself. In his own studios, typically in his own home and playing all instruments and mixing the music.

  56. J.... M....

See you soon for the umpteenth time. First show was coliseum in Phoenix, 197X. This November at the Granada on Lower Greenville. Want to hear 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen" maybe "Sweet Emily."
