Leon Russell - Shootout On The Plantation Lyrics
Junior and the drummer are fighting
About a woman in the neighborhood
Oh, the drummer never hit a bad lick in his life
And Junior never hit any good
But that didn't clear the air
'Cause Junior's still living in the blackboard jungle
With his Elvis Presley hair
Yeah, the drummer's got the drum, the colonel's got the gun
And Junior's only got a knife, he'd better run
It's a shootout on the plantation, it's so hard to understand
Why do some people have to hurt somebody?
The firewater's not the villain.
And stabbing your friends is such a drag to boot
It's a shootout on the plantation
Oh, heaven help Mister Swan, yeah. (help me)
And the cold steel blade is shining
Enough to cause your blood to freeze
But the drummer is drumming a Rolling Stones' number
On Junior's head and on his knees
Oh, Oklahoma's lonesome cowboys are turned on in Tinsel Town
I knew there'd be some cameras rolling if Andy was standing around.
[Chorus]
Won't somebody help me
You gotta help me, help me, help me..
Why don't you help me, help me?
Why don't you tell me about it?
Why don't you scream and shout it?
Won't you help your mister?
Won't you kiss your sister?

Leon Russell Shootout On The Plantation Comments
Thanks Alex turner, this is a masterpiece
Great album!!!!
yet ANOTHER song about Rita?
Ain't it funny that now I can't remember what I had for breakfast but I can sing all the lyrics to this.
Heaven help mister. Won't you kiss your sister.
God damn classic rock radio sucks - it's a sin that I'm just now hearing this song. This is as good if not better than most of the stuff they play.
Seeing Leon in concert (1970's) was an experience.
Leon, coming out and staring at the audience with his magnetic cat green eyes, long white hair,(very handsome)a fantastic group of musicians playing music together, the sexy and eccentric female singers and cast of characters. A great memory of a man who should be known to more people.
I’m here from Alex!
RIP Junior Markham
This is a mostly true story, both the principals were friends of mine. Junior was Jimmy "Junior" Markham, who sang with Leon in high school and who passed a few days ago, and the drummer was the infamous Chuck Blackwell who passed earlier this year. There's a bit of exaggeration but the basic facts are true. Chuck and Jimmy were good friends in later life and played together often.
My brother turned me on to leon in 71 , still good , like it just came out yessterday, or, last week maybe, every time i play leon, its new. R.i.p. ,
Saint Peter opened the gates for this brother/can i get a amen?
on juniosr head and on his knees! Love these lyrics
About the time of this release Billy Swan had a song out "I can help". Heaven help me mr swan.
"Junior's still livin' in a blackboard jungle with his Elvis Presley hair.." BADASS!
kenny, wish we could have seen him one more time.
LOVE this song
Yet another legend has left us. I was lucky to see Leon up close at a small club in London after 'The Union' album came out. He and his band were great! I LOVE this song so much! Still play it to death on piano. Leon Russell, Rest In Peace.
I have got to get the sheet music for my husband. Thank you for reminding me.(I don't imagine he really needs the sheet music, but I'm hoping that buying it for him will inspire him to play it for me.)
Fucking amazing. Check that flow.
One of the best Leon Russell songs!
What a damn good song. Too bad I never heard of him before he passed away.
explore his work... you will not regret it!
RIP Leon, you gave us some beautiful music. Thank you sir.
One of the best!!! Great album until stolen that and 400 more!!! Forever in our hearts Leon!!!
thats Harrison on lead slide guitar - from the book That Magic Feeling
Leon is a Muppet. Jim Henson created him lol I saw Leon at a small club..just about had to call the fire department because he set the stage on fire. Best show ever and I seen Willie Nelson and Ray Charles both. leon walks up to the stage with a cane looking old and tired then look out man!
Go home and smoke your ass hairs.
loved Carney!
that's what I'm talking about
F en A! And all those other letters too. :)
Just picked this up on vinyl last week. Got Carney, now, too.
Great song. It's shit how so little people know about it....or Leon in general.
true, but it's their loss
I saw him four times in concert. The first time in 1973 when I was a tyke of but 14. The NRPS opened up the show with Jerry Garca sitting in.
Bill Wyman on bass!
+Alexandra Christian was wondering... Killer bass line...
I always wondered if this one was Alan Spenner from the Grease Band on bass, since it's so flashy, but it does have a bit of Wyman's style, doesn't it?
lp released March 1970
leon's best! this album, this song!
I'm with you on that!
Found this late last night on the Deep Tracks channel on satellite radio. Instantly fell in love with it. Great dichotomy between the bass and the piano. Gonna have to learn to play this one on bass.
HUGE talent in every area.
Awesome tune! I have it in my mp3 player!
Same here!
Ringo groovin' out on this one as well!
awesome song, awesome album as 37 lucky people realize
featuring Ringo on drums!
yeah that's the original, that's the Shootout that stole my heart that many years ago.
This song was based on a real knife fight Leon witnessed.
Yep. See my comment on the backstory.
This is fantastic! Thanks for sharing...
