Leon Russell - Roll Away The Stone Lyrics

Well it's such a strange world that I'm living in
She was my woman and she was my friend
But I was wrong again.
Such a strange changes that you put me through
But like a fool I fell in love with you
What can this poor boy do?

Roll away the stone
Don't leave me here alone
Resurrect me and protect me
Don't leave me laying here
What will they do in two thousand years?

It's such a strange time that we're passing through
I thought you'd tell me when your time was due
I guess you thought I knew
Strange way to keep avoiding me
Why did you lie how could I help but be
Oh won't you help me be?

Saw Leon at Belmont Raceway around '80.
Just a small gathering, free concert.
An old skinny black dude was sitting on a stool in the middle of the stage, tapping on a bongo. It might have been Leon's father in law?
    Leon was perfect, as usual.

  57. W.... T....

This is one of my favorites. I was lucky enough to see Mr. Russell play, in Larry, KS, back in the -- well, back in the Dawn Time. It was in the old Allen Fieldhouse. Everybody bitched about the sound. Remember dressing for concerts? Sparkly shirts, acid-washed flares, Frye boots? Dang. You could hide a Christmas turkey in a Frye boot.

  58. D.... B....

Lesser known song. Whats wrong with you man. None of Leons songs are lesser known to true Leon fans man. Again whats wrong with you. RIP Dude.

  59. J.... T....

It's that time of year, Easter, which brings me to this song. Leon is resting in our Savior's arms right now.... no, wait a minute! He's sitting at a gleaming white grand piano playing & singing God's praises. Playing music is the only way it would be heaven for The Master of Space & Time.

  60. C.... N....

I remember this, I was young then.

The era after the Beatles broke up was such an awesome, and rich time for Rock-n Roll, and Leon was riding on the highest wave of ALL the "New Breed", ..he had such a Great Group of musicians he had been playing with for years, v..now it was HIS TIME to shine, ...and man, did this cat glow. ..Great time to be alive,..; if you Googled Rock-nRolll, leon's name would be at the top....Great Human

I still can't believe he's gone.  His style hit my soul from the first time I heard him on a record when I was 13 back in the early 70's. A devout fan ever since

  79. M.... ....

Everyone who bought the album has heard this song. My favorite memory is Leon flirting with the black up singers and jumping on top of the piano. RIP

    M.... ....

He was a flirt with those girls. I loved when he would jump up on the piano and start playing his guitar. A most amazing musician.

  80. A.... P....

    ~ A great chapter in music ~

  81. S.... P....

    A great loss.

  82. G.... C....

This was a huge hit when I was a teenager.

  83. B.... P....

Leon performed with John Lennons Elephants Memory in 1971. His rag time blues piano influenced Mott the Hoople .

    B.... P....

Really? Great to know. It makes sense now that you say it. I hope its on youtube.

  84. A.... M....

    RIP Leon. A legend.

  85. D.... W....

First time I saw Leon was with Freddie King and J J Cale...now they're all together...so glad I saw him many, many times over the years.

    D.... W....

That had to be great to see them all together. Leon produced and played on some Freddie King albums. I read that he wanted to play guitar like Freddie. Well so did Clapton. And JJ Cale, he was such a cool, laid back guy that wrote some great songs and played guitar very cool. Clapton also named him as one of his guitar heroes.

  86. B.... M....

    A true American master.

  87. G.... K....

This was always one of my favorites. He naturally took flak for being so presumptuous as to "compare himself to Jesus"--how dare he!--but what a great bold lyric. We don't need to roll it away, Leon. Your music's eternal. And we forgive you for that shit recording you did with Elton John.

  88. T.... ....

The master will live on in Space and Time. Thank you for making my Space Captain Laugh and Cry and my body move. RIP

  89. P.... F....

A morning of GREAT MEMORIES!!! R.I.P. LEON~~~ LOVING THIS SONG!!

  90. R.... M....

    Rest in Peace.

  91. T.... ....

I'll miss you for now, Leon. But am looking forward to seeing you one day on the big marble stage in the sky. You know, I've seen hundreds of concerts, but seeing you at Party in the Park on June 2, 2013 was one of my most memorable. Especially entertaining was at the end of your gig when you said, "Well, we've come to that point in the show where I leave the stage and they dim the lights. But for those of you that know me, you know that I'm not a fan of walking anymore, so lets just image me walking off of the stage. Da da da da da da da da. About now you all go nuts, the lights come back on, and I walk back on stage again. Dum dee dum da dum dum dum. And here we go all over again. Hello everyone!" That was the first, last and only time I got to see the legend that you became. Thank you, Leon. A job well done!

    T.... ....

He was awesome live. Loved all his albums but saw him first in the Mad Dogs and Englishmen Tour, then 2 other concerts in the 70's. He had the audience going crazy. Unfortunately, I never saw him in his later years and I regret that but I am thankful I grew up when I did and got to hear his fabulous music. He will not be forgotten!

  92. T.... N....

RIP Leon Russell. Roll away the stone ... Love you!

  93. a.... ....

I used to put this album on the stereo, close the lid, then put my infant son in his cradle on top. He slept soundly through the whole album, except for this song. He'd wake up and groove to it. That was 1970. Peace be with you, Leon.

  94. L.... A....

Magic man will be missed ...

  95. G.... B....

Come On Man, one of lesser-known songs, who ever wrote That needs to be Lesser-Known!! They act like Tulsa, Oklahoma is in a another country!! Back 73, at East Central HS talent show seen a kid act, played and was all over the stage to This Song and it was Great!! RIP Mr. Leon Russell.
