Lee, Peggy - Ghost Riders In The Sky (A Cowboy Legend) Lyrics

(Ghost Riders in the Sky)

An old cow polk went ridin’ out one dark and windy day
Upon a ranch he rested as he went along his way
When all at once a mighty herd of red eyed cows he saw
A plowin’ through the ragged sky and up the cloudy draw

(Yippee-I-Yay Yippee-I-Yay)
Ghost herd in the Sky

Their brands were still on fire and their hoofs were made of steel
Their horns were black and shiney and their hot breath he could feel
A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky
For he saw the riders coming hard and he heard their mournful cry

(Yippee-I-Yay Yippee-I-Yay)
Yippee-I-Yo, Yippee-I-Yay
Ghost Riders in the Sky

As the riders loped on by him, he heard one call his name
'If you want to save your soul from hell, you’re ridin’ on that range
then cowboy, change your ways today… or with us you’ll ride on
tryin’ to catch the devil’s herd across these endless sky'

(Yippee-I-Yay Yippee-I-Yay)
The ghost herd in the Sky
Ghost Riders in the Sky

I think this is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. It was originally done by Stan Jones in 1948. Then it was recorded by Burl Ives in early 1949 and was a big hit, then just a month later it was recorded by Vince Vaughn and his orchestra. I personally think that the original by Jones is the best. I guess sometime in 1949 Gene Autry sang the song in one of his movies and also this version by Peggy Lee was recorded.... She does a great job and her production might be the best out of all of them.

If anyone might be interested, here is a link to the original... https://youtu.be/eqFBE6vZ1i4

I might try and add it to my facebook page. I have a photo here of dark and wild and gloomy red tinged clouds with a lightning storm in the background and there are 4 very distinctive figures on horses up in those clouds.... It made every hair on my body stand up when I first saw it...

Buddy, it was recorded by Vaughn Monroe, a very popular bandleader, not Vince Vaughn, the actor. I'm sure you knew that, just a slip of the keyboard. ; )

Sounds like the start of electric guitar music, was it before Les Paul & Mary Ford? It's a great recording, love the guitar work.

The guitarist was Peggy's husband, Dave Barbour. And this was my favorite version of "Ghost Riders...".

This song was the number 1 song by Vaughn Monroe in 1949. I personally thought the number 2 song That Lucky Old Sun was better, but Frankie Laine is my favorite singer.

    Very good tune !!!

This is the first time I've heard a woman sing this song. Not bad. Well, it's Peggy Lee. It wouldn't be bad.
