Lee, Brenda - Why You Been Gone So Long Lyrics

Ever time it rains Lord, I run to my window
All I do is wring my hands and moan
Listen to that thunder roar,
And I can hear that lonesome wind blow
Tel me why baby, why ya been gone so long

Tell me baby, why ya been gone so long,
Ya been gone so long
Tell me baby, why ya been gone so long
Who'll be scratching at my door
And I can hear that lonesome wind blow
Tell me baby, why ya been gone so long

Someone said they thought they saw ya roaring down to Reno
With another girl from San Antoine
They tell me I'm a fool to pine for you but what do they know
Tell me baby, why ya been gone so long

Tell me baby, why ya been gone so long,
Ya been gone so long
Tell me baby, why ya been gone so long
Who'll be scratching at my door
And I can hear that lonesome wind blow
Tel me baby, why ya been gone so long

Tell me baby, why ya been gone so long,
Ya been gone so long
Tell me baby, why ya been gone so long
Who'll be scratching at my door
And I can hear that lonesome wind blow
Tel me baby, why ya been gone so long
Tel me baby, why ya been gone so long

On a 1969 visit to Nashville,I bought back Johnny Darrell's version to the UK and worked it up with my band, soon as I got off the plane!

Yeah, such a great tune. I bet you played it real nice Graham.

    I was intending to
post a comment directly to The Winner, but when I
noticed you had referenced the great
Johnny Darrell's recording of this song, I just had to
    reply to you. Brenda
    does a fine job, and
    I think the smash up
job by the band is even finer. But Johnny Darrell OWNS
    this song, as he did
so many that he recorded, especially
    those heart-melting
ballads like "The Deepening Snow." His
death from diabetes at age 57 was one of
    country music's greatest loses.

Yeah, Johnny Darrell sure was amazing. He sure knew how to find the best tunes to sing too. He is definitely a singer that is not remembered enough these days.

@Milton Moore thoroughly enjoyed your comments Milton. I didn't even know Johnny had died. I sang this song with my band in the late sixties/early seventies and my guitarist from that time died just two months ago. Here in the UK,I first saw Johnny in Manchester as part of a pioneering UK tour featuring up and coming US Country acts. This was early to mid sixties and also on the bill was Willie Nelson (in blazer) and Nat Stuckey. I've got a programme somewhere in the shed, must dig it out AND listen to "The Deepening Snow"....my favourite is "River Bottom"
