Lee, Brenda - Rock The Bop Lyrics

Oh, well I'm old enough to kick
And old enough to rock a the bop
Oh, well I'm old enough to kick
And old enough to rock a the bop
I got on my swinging jeans and looking for a dream,
Cause I'm old enough to rock the bop

I like the sax when it starts to scream man
I'm gone and I dig the scene
The drummer in the band is a setting the beat,
And I'm setting here with a itchy feet

Well, I'm old enough to kick,
And old enough to rock the bop
Well, I'm old enough to kick
And old enough to rock the bop

I got on my rocking shoes,
And I'm rocking to the blues cause
I'm old enough to rock the bop

Little Billy cram, just caught my eye,
Duck tail flying as he bopped by
Little Willie crew cut is sitting by me,
But he's so dumb, that he can't see

Well, I'm old enough to kick,
And old enough to rock a the bop
Well, I'm old enough to kick
And old enough to rock the bop
I got on my swinging jeans and looking for a dream,
Cause I'm old enough to rock a bop

One 4th of July (in the 50's so you don't even know) but it was Real peace and watermelons and fireworks and the week off from the Russian Chinese Hordes ... in Scarsdale almost. Even parents seemed to catch up to life a bit by the end of July.
And the son of our Host played Brenda Lee's "Let's Jump the Broomstick" on his little box upstairs during a "lull?" It was memorable. I was so young and she was famous for it but wow I thought there must be a way. Then the 60's ... so I was not the only one who found the times so ah promising?

  21. j.... ....

She did as expected ... yet somewhere there's a Producer who should at least be "investigated'". And Dick Clark too!

  25. C.... H....

It sounds like she's saying "I like the SEX when it starts to scream." It's actually SAX.

  26. l.... ....

Yes, dates back to my teen age years, and while I liked that type of music, I was too busy honing my trumpet playing skills and listening to my favorite type of music, classical. I then was a Music Major my 1st year of college, and decided I wasn't good enough to be a pro musician. Ironically, after returning to Madison after I retired, I started playing in the Emporia City Band, which payed it's musicians a small amount. So technically speaking, I finally was a paid professional musician.

I enjoy this here groove & presence rather then the burned out 'Whore' atmosphere that many female pop singers try to feed us these days. They know who they are.

    s.... d....

+super duper Well I guess they feel that they have to give their fans a little something extra since there is no way in hell that they have one half the talent that Brenda Lee has.

  29. A.... D....

Southern rockabilly soul. No way to fake it, and Brenda's old enough to kick it. And that little dance step along with that driving sax break. Good Lord!

    We Always love her

    P.... M....

I thought it was I'm old enough for chicken , old enough to rock the bop 😂

    P.... M....

@ben palmer It's actually "to chicken" which was a fad dance to polka beat. Everyone here is apparently copying lyrics from some internet source. Another mistake is "And I'm setting here" - should be "sitting here". And Little Billy cram? I think is Billy Brown.

  32. J.... J....

  43. P.... L....

mwbright is right she was one of the top singers ever

  44. v.... p....

what does that mean *rockin the bob*

    v.... p....

Might mean dance, but why say she is old enough to dance ? Old enough to have sex is my guess. ' I got on my swinging jeans and looking for a dream,
Cause I'm old enough to rock a bop'.

    v.... p....

kissn at that time .. what meant the same, i guess

    v.... p....

vuoto più scuro A bop is a dance. She is at a dance party and wants to dance with a boy, but she is being overlooked because she is seen as young and unable to dance well. She is protesting to the boy's assumptions by saying, "Ask me to dance! I'm old enough and I can keep up, it's as simple for me to dance as being able to kick!"

  45. i.... w....

Brenda was scolded, as a very young child, that "you are extremely selfish...you should be looking for ways to help the poor". It was a family thingy...food was important as it meant people would not be eating human flesh, right? It goes with, "eat your supper (all up) people are starving in Africa". Thus, Brenda asked around and from the answers gathered, "people are most interested in sex". Brenda read all sorts of books, including hiring a doctor and a physicist to explain sex, Music seemed to play an important part more than wine and food. Being a lazy person, songs about sex...seemed an easy answer. Taxes were surely to be upped and then the gov'ts would have no excuse for not helping the poor. Brenda never cut a cheque personally for the monies gathered.

  46. W.... G....

You Bet, you can say that again.

  47. R.... J....

I think it was 1956 or 57 as Brenda Lee went into Hollywood to look for Jerry Lee Lewis as the news, I believe, carried the news of a boy that had been jailed in the UK since he was 2 who could not be released because no one knew his name. Jerry Lee and Brenda Lee would give him the name of "the descendant of Tom Dooley". Was there a Tom D? Nope. It was a new name. As Jerry and Brenda arrived in the UK the news would claim that Jerry was married to cousin, a 14 year old, but in truth, it was Brenda, that married this nameless boy to get him out of custody and then, claim "annulment" but when Brenda entered the prison, dressed as a nun to bring the boy out under the nun's dress, there were 100's of boys, under the age of 7, in custody. It was the custom of UK Royalties to marry into, e.g. North American tribes to secure lands & mineral rites which lead to Brenda's aboriginal father and UK Royal mother marrying. Brenda's mother would push for new laws that pertained to juvenile delinquents that they were not to be tried as "adults" and could not be imprisoned until the age of 21+. It was a new rule.

Interesting story. It was probably 1958 for at least two reasons. 1958 was the year that Jerry Lee Lewis got into so much trouble for marrying his wife Myra Jean, who was 14 at the time, to the British she looked about 12. Also "Tom Dooley" was a huge hit in '58 by the folk group The Kingston Trio and it was all over the airwaves on both sides of the Atlantic at the time.

Talk about a future Fox at that time!

  74. M.... B....

Written by Mel Tillis. He observed a Brenda recording session in the mid-fifties and was amazed. It seemed like everyone just started and ended the song right on the beat and it was darn near perfect on the first take. He felt like an amateur when he heard what Brenda and the A-Team could do with basically no rehearsal. Soon he wrote this song for Brenda. So they've known each other for nearly 60 years! (edited to correct math error)

    M.... B....

You''re right about the A-Team. Sounds like Hank Garland on guitar who went on to be Elvis' guitar player mid career. But, I may be wrong. It could be Grady Martin??

    M.... B....

Both Garland and Martin played on this and lot of other Brenda records. The A-Team also played on many Elvis sessions. The famous riffs, like on Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree or All You Gotta Do are generally attributed to Garland. I'm not sure about "Elvis' guitar player". If you mean in the live band, it was originally, of course, Scotty Moore. Later it was James Burton. You may be thinking of him.

    M.... B....

@Mostly Brenda only brenda can rock this as it should be .
