Lee, Brenda - Fool Number One Lyrics

Am I fool number one or am I fool number two
How many other girls have been fooled by you
I suppose that the number is far from being small
And I'll bet that I'm the biggest fool of all

If I had the chance I guess I'd do it all again
I'd go down that same old road even knowing at the end
You'll leave me when your heart hears a new love call
So I'll guess that I'm the biggest fool of all

Am I fool number one or am I fool number two
How many other girls have been fooled by you
I suppose that the number is far from being small
And I'll guess that I'm the biggest fool of all

Aspiring songwriters, take note; every once in a while you might have a shot at a hit simply by mailing your song to an artist. It doesn't happen often, but K. R. Fulton found out in 1961 that it was still possible. Fulton dropped a song called The Biggest Fool Of All into a mailbox and addressed the envelope to country stars Teddy and Doyle Wilburn, in Nashville. The Wilburn Brothers received it, looked it over, and thought it was perfect for their protege, Loretta Lynn. They took the song and singer to Owen Bradley of Decca Records, who was Brenda lee's producer. Owen liked Loretta, sure enough, and he also liked the song-but not for her. I needed a hit for Brenda Lee. When you got a string of hit's goin' and you need one , it's sort of like having a note due at the bank and no money to pay it with. The Wilburns had brought Bradley all the collateral he needed. He told them that the girl Loretta, sounded great, but he'd really like to have the song. How about a deal? He'd get Loretta Lynn signed(which he did), if he could have the song for Brenda Lee. If Brenda doesn't like it, he added, we'll cut it with Loretta. They said fine. Brenda liked it and the usual crew of Nashville musicians was assembled in the studio to record it. The session went off without a hitch, except thta it became obvious, judging from the lyrics, that the title was wrong. They changed it to Fool #1 and it became Brenda's eighth Top 10 record; great thing for Mr. Fulton. Floyd Cramer played piano in a slightly different style one this record. He sounds like Ivory joe Hunter. The reason: Hunter was actually in Nashville thta day, and had just dropped by to play some of his songs for Bradley, so Owen had that style in his head during the session.

I'm the biggest Fool ever!!! Met a Guy way back 2001 and he used me left right and sideways. When he was with me he was prowling looking for another girl to replace me. The funny thing is that I fell for him. yeah, I was the biggest fool ever because I kept seeing him on and off for about 17 years. No more. I am completely done with this asshole.

On this day in 1961 {Nov. 12th} Brenda Lee performed "Fool #1" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'...
One month earlier on October 2nd it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #3 and spent 14 weeks on the Top 100...
It was her fourth straight Top 10 record; between 1960 and 1963 she had eleven Top 10 hits...
Even though the song didn't make Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart, from 1973 to 1980 she had nine records to make the country Top 10...
