LeDoux, Chris - The Buffalo Grass Lyrics

Its been forty-five days since the snows have begun
I stare at the fire and long for the sun
As the bitter winds blow through the mouth of the pass
I sit here and dream of the Buffalo grass

The ponies are shaggy; their coats have grown long
With heads down, they huddle together as one
At the window my breath forms a mist on the glass
As I patiently wait for the Buffalo grass

The Seasons still turn
And the prairies still yearn
For those who were here long ago
The Sioux have all gone and the Bison moved on
Soon, I will follow them home

Mollie passed in September and left me alone
Now my heart is as heavy and round as a stone
Too many years have gone by too fast
And I long for the feel of the Buffalo grass

The animals sleep while the world holds it’s breath
The woods are as still and as silent as death
When the mountain streams flow, spring will follow at last
And the wind will blow free through the Buffalo grass

The Seasons still turn
And the prairies still yearn
For those who were here long ago
The Sioux have all gone and the Bison moved on
Soon, I will follow them home

The geese will return, a symbol of change
The elk will be foraging out on the range
Once again nature’s palette will color the pass
And I will find peace in the Buffalo grass
Yes, I will find peace in the Buffalo grass

Like others this was played at a family members funeral. It was my grandfather (Tȟuŋkašila). I remember a story he told about his father and uncle. They were on their way to Denver from Pine Ridge. On the way their travel was stopped by a herd of Buffalo. It took 3 hours for the Buffalo to pass. The brothers looked at each other and knew this was the last time they would see such a sight. That is exactly why this song touches me so much. The seasons may still change they way they always have, but things will never be the same. We can never go back, you and I will never see the great bison herds. They were killed for the same reasons my grandparents weren't allowed to speak their own language in the schools the government forced them to go to. I will play Chris Ledoux at my Father's funeral and I hope someone will play Chris Ledoux at mine.

I just recently read the book inspired by Chris LeDoux songs.. Yellow Outlaw Stud.. One of the chapters is Buffalo Grass.

  39. R.... T....

    É um excelente álbum.

  40. J.... M....

What a fine testament to the grass that sustained the buffalo and now the cattle and horses, not to mention wildlife.  Strangers to Wyoming and the high plains often wonder what makes our livestock so fat because they're use to seeing green fields. Hadn't heard this one before. We use to ranch along the Powder River, the Cheyenne, and the Tongue. One day, I shall rest under  the Buffalo Grass.

    J.... M....

    gods country

    J.... M....

Only problem is now most of our cattle are fed corn...not good

    J.... M....

@Mark Deal He was referring to range cattle.

What a great song! With all of my LeDoux CDs, I Can't believe I hadn't heard this song till I accidentally came across it on YT. He always had a way to make you feel like you were there when he sang one of his stories. He just got better with age.

    d.... ....

If you get the chance, catch Clay Canfield in Nashville playing at The Stage during the day.  He was the writer of "Buffalo Grass".

  46. P.... W....

I can truly say I know how ya feel. Lost my Pop's in 08. some time the feelin's come back without warning , and I still have to excuse myself. At 47 , I guess it dont get any easier, when you keep losing your HERO's.

    P.... W....

I lost my Dad in 91 in a car wreck. I was 30. He was my hunting and fishing buddy. He was my confidant. He was my source for wisdom and advice. He was my best friend. I miss him everyday. I'm tearing up right now missing him. It gets better, but it never goes away.

  47. P.... W....

Got it man... No , thank you. Just glad people still listen to his music. he's the reason I ever picked up a guitar and started writing and singing myself.

  48. J.... m....

I love this song. I bought the CD just before my dad died. I remember him telling me of the buffalo grass that grew in NE Wyoming, where my family had homesteaded back in the early 1900"s. My roots run deep in Wyoming and this song makes me think of my heritage, and childhood home and good times.

Do not be content in knowing our country only by what you see on TV, we're much more than carnival, soccer, the Amazon jungle and beaches
Come and meet our country and you'll be amazed!

Also, one thing is for certain. You won't see it from the road.

Many bull riders go to the United States to seek his fortune, except that here we have besides good riders too many team ropers, tie down ropers, barrel racers, bulldoguers, among others.
Our culture is very rich, we have the North American culture with cowboys, cowboys in the south of our country called gauchos, the northeast called vaqueros, and the Midwest called Pantaneiros. What they have in common? country life!
