Its to be balanced. You have to be unafraid while also still be afraid. If you're too afraid then you can't do anything and if you're too unafraid then you'll become overconfident and misjudge. The two parts in the song are saying "be strong but also be soft".

opposites co-exist. It's a yin yang balance song about opposing forces. Hard, soft, hot, cold, light, dark, sun, moon, like a tree unyielding, like bamboo pliable.

I love how her teaching approach is different from Shang's. Though, to be fair, they're no longer facing large-scale war; so that's probably a big factor.

Ok so I'm kinda annoyed by all the comments that say "she's contradicting herself" because that's the point. The point is to be hard and soft, firm but flexible. It's supposed to be balanced. One alone is not enough.
