Le Tigre - What's Yr Take On Cassavettes Lyrics

We've talked about it in letters
And we've talked about it on the phone
But how you really feel about it
I don't really know
What's Yr Take on Cassavetes?
What's Yr Take on Cassavetes?
What's Yr Take on Cassavetes?
What's Yr Take on Cassavetes?
Misogynist? Genius? Misogynist? Genius?
Misogynist? Genius? Misogynist? Genius?
What's Yr Take on Cassavetes? [x4]
Alcoholic? Messiah? Alcoholic? Messiah?
Alcoholic? Messiah? Alcoholic? Messiah?
What's Yr Take on Cassavetes? [x4]
Genius? Misogynist? Alcoholic?
Hey where's Gena?
Genius? Misogynist? Messiah? Alcoholic?
What's Yr Take on
What's Yr Take on
What's Yr Take on
What's Yr Take on Cassavetes?

Le Tigre What's Yr Take On Cassavettes Comments

I don't know if this really adds anything, or if anyone would read this but I think Cassavetes undeniably had misogynist themes to his movies but as his career rolled on, it was really clear that he devoted a lot of his imagination to the lives and interior life of women. The actions of Woman Under the Influence, Minnie and Mousikwiz, Gloria, Love Streams and especially Opening Night were all propelled by the motivations and needs of women. That's so rare in movies, whatever it's a Hollywood film or an arty indie film. In doing so, Cassavetes got a lot of it wrong, but also (if anything) he used his tools and talents to give a huge platform to his wife, Gena Rowlands and she took that platform and made some of the best female-led roles I think have ever happened. And part of that is that he let his wife find the character and the meaning in the film, instead of acting like director-and-dictator and instructing her what the meaning was. I think Cassavetes was guided by an intense interest in love - and love is the answer to a lot of things, but we also all have examples in our lives where being guided by love leads us to do hurtful things. He did both. I think having that love as a center separates him from a lot of the "Great White Male" filmmakers out there. His films aren't a statement of "look how smart, look how clever I am" it's a statement of "here's how much love I feel."

Cassavetes is just about the last man that anyone should even fleetingly contemplate to attribute to him the label 'misogynist'.

He was not an alcoholic either. An alcoholic gets up from bed and begins his day by drinking alcohol. Cassavetes did not do that. He just liked to drink, that's all.

Well said. A lot of people simply don't get Cassavetes. Apparently this song by Le Tigre was written in reaction to Kathleen Hanna's experience of seeing the film Husbands. Personally, I think it's a great movie. It's an honest portrayal of chauvinistic 40 something men. Whether or not that is a reflection of Cassavetes as a person, I have no idea. What I do know is that he had the courage to make films outside of the studio system. They're meaningful films and many are still indebted to him.

    i laughed out loud when i first heard this;
i would hang out with these people any day.

Not sure what you mean by 'longer than they should have been'. You mean, longer than your attention span, right? I'm pretty sure he made them just as long as he felt they should've been. What, did you just watch AWUTI and
Opening Night'? He made several films under 2 hours, and a couple more just over 2 hours. You better stay the hell away from Wim Wenders movies.

  23. H.... ....

I enjoyed Gena Rowlands' performance in A Woman Under the Influence... He had a tendency to make films that were a little longer than they should have been, but I've enjoyed most of them.
