LaMontagne, Ray - Winter Birds Lyrics
It's the Widow now that owns that angry plow,
The spartan Mule and The Crippled Cow
The fallow field that will yield no more,
As the fox lay sleeping beneath her kitchen floor
And from the pasture the fence it is leaning away
The clouds crack and growl
Like some great cat on the prowl
Crying out, "I am, I am" over and over again
The days grow short
As the nights grow long
The kettle sings its tortured song
As many petalled kiss I place upon her brow,
Oh, my lady, Lady I am loving you now
The winter birds have come back again,
Here the sprightly Chickadee
Gone now is the Willow Wren
In passing greet each other as if old, old friends
And to the voiceless trees
It is their own they will lend
The days grow short
As the nights grow long
The kettle sings its tortured song
As many petalled kiss I place upon her brow,
Oh, my lady, Lady I am loving you now
And though all these things will change,
The memories will remain
As green to gold, and gold to brown
The leaves will fall to feed the ground
And in their falling, make no sound
Oh my lady,
Lady I am loving you now
I've gathered all my money and I'm goin' to town,
To buy my lady a long and flowing gown
'Cause come tomorrow morning
We're off to the county fair
I'll find a yellow flower
And I will lace it in her hair

LaMontagne, Ray Winter Birds Comments
Never fails to move me. All the wild horses has the same effect. Some music just stirs your soul.
I like this song until I get to the line "Oh my lady, Lady I am loving you now" every time it's sung.
I keep feeling like it gets cut way too short or really should keep going a bit more. Like you start the section and just give up. It doesn't even rhyme with "-ow" the way its sung, like he got gut-punched and just toughed the line out.
It's super weak.
It's the widow finding love in mother nature and accepting that her loss is just part of natural life.
23/08/2018: they’re carving me up real good today (umbilical stub, ghost hernia, tether to mother)—these are the last of the summer letters, but there’s a lady. goodness their might be a lady.
So very beautiful!
might be the best written song I've ever heard! stunning
Me and my partner went for a picnic in a beautiful wild flower meadow and we laid out and watched the sky drift past to this song...
Why did this get pulled from Spotify?
dreamsofgroundmeat; I don’t know for certain but all I can say is there are a lot of artists (and sometimes their labelstoo) who are against Spotify because it’s free sharing; it means they don’t get their dues for the music they have written. (They don’t get paid for their art, basically)
But I don’t know if this is why RLM’s stuff was pulled.
Sob... So beautiful the poetry, guitar and voice!
"The days grow short as the nights grow long.... the kettle sings its tortured song.... a many-petaled kiss I place upon her brow...oh my lady, lady I am loving you...." WOW that's some gorgeous poetry....
true that
ooooOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!.........is any other comment required?...guessing not.
Play again this song on a lonely walk and lose yourself...and just walk in wooded areas.
INCREDIBLE, absolutely picturesque and stunning...thank you Ray for picking up a piece of A4 and taking the time to decorate it in words. Six minutes and twenty seconds of bliss..and surely what life is mean't to be about. I'd happily walk out of the many jobs i have had, sit down by a running river, look up at the sky....whilst listening to this piece of art.
SONIC FOXX MUSIC...(D.N.A... Developing New Artists) youre getting it, man
It's a year later..but THANK YOU.
a volte mi sento un equilibrista squilibrato dagli eventi questa musica mi parla con dolce vigore
Probably the most beautiful song I've ever heard!
You sir are a scholar James Bushell...i totally agree with you. I used to walk about about six miles a day and in winter this beautiful song got me through if rain or sleet hit hard. To say it ended up on repeat a few times would be a complete underestimation....whoahhhhhhh...the only word which sums this beautiful song.
6.20....wow....Rays vocal just makes this song. Somebody recently said "YOU'RE A SONGWRITER....i suppose you've written something for that moment when you leave us..??"..........NOPE...none of them would be good enough to fade away to like WINTER BIRDS.
THIS SONG WOULD BE THE ONE......6 minutes of keeping teary folk interested....follow RAY LAMONTAGNE vicar!!!!!
THIS is some good music here.

This song reminds me of my dads passing every time i hear it. this song holds a very special place in my heart and is by far my most favorite song. Saw him sing it live back in 2009 and there wasnt a dry eye around me in the audience.
your dad sounds like a nice man!

15, bitches!!!! haha I don't acc think it matters how old you are, anyone can like good music.
Everybody's watching fucking Lady Gaga videos or some such shit. I hate it when I
mention Ray Lamontagne to somebody and they're like "Who?"
0 dislikes?
Is the Earth a better place already??
What an artist...
My Dad showed me this song , fuck he's a great bastard . Love the cunt .
The option to listen to this isn't limited to our generation; there's always the possibility that older generations could choose to listen to it too so you can hardly place all the blame on our age-group! I'm not keen on this thing I see across Youtube of people commenting on how today's youth have 'bad' music taste - each to their own! But I do agree that this is an amazing amazing song & deserves more views :)
I'm 16 and I cannot agree more!
Because my generation of people suck . I'm 17 and this is some of the most amazing music/lyrics I've ever heard/seen .
Ray Lamontagne - Winter Birds
