Lake Street Dive - I Can Change Lyrics

Hate casts a long shadow
I know that I lie in it
And let it rule my mind from time to time
Escaping an old battle
That clings on like a vine to me
Whispers dirty lies in my ear
I know we didn't start this fight
And I won't let it rule my heart tonight

I can change
I can change
I can still change
I can still change

Tracing an old pattern
Drawing the lines from where I am, and from where I wanna be
Forget that old adage
That history continues to keep us from the world we wanna see
I am scared that I won't get it right
But fear won't rule my heart tonight

I can change
I can change
I can still change
I can still change

I can change
I can change
I can still change
I can still change

I can change
I can change
I can still change
I can still change

I can change
I can change
I can still change
I can still change

peka159 ah, there you are. I’ve been looking for you.

  32. h.... ....

For me this song takes me to a battle with depression. You're at a point when you're starting to realize there's something wrong and start to realize you may not be able to deal with it on your own. There's a back and forth between the demons and your desire to overcome it. It feels like you need to change, because at that point you don't necessarily think of it as healing...it feels like there's something wrong with you. Social stigmas make you think it's somehow your fault and you need to change in order to correct it.

  33. J.... ....

Is she battling depression? By any chance

  34. C.... B....

I had Budweiser special reserve commercial before this I guess.., so making fun of micro beers didn’t work for you, dilly dilly Miller lite my distorter porter does me right.

  35. P.... P....

Someone please enter LSD to the San Remo song contest

  36. C.... R....

    Wow 😍😍

  37. J.... E....

The melody and structure of this song mimics "If I Die Young" by the Band Perry. My first minor criticism of their originality. But I still love LSD and want to see them (again) in concert someday!

  38. c.... ....

No matter where you go, there you are.Changing is hard....we go through life with so much baggage.

  39. A.... V....

found this band at a very sad time in my life ,separated from my family working long hours ,trying to get back home to my roots ,I'm a fellow musician and everything on the radio was so uninspiring ,even the so called new bands ,they were all just rotating the same old ...Then I heard this voice and this band...gave me hope that music was still alive, 4 very old souls in a very new band thanks ..love this video it says a lot about today

  40. K.... M....

They played this on my local radio station and I balled my eyes out. so powerfulll. Thank you for creating this content you guys. and shout out to KHUM <3

  41. H.... V....

I can honestly say Lake Street Dive saves my life during my lowest points. I’m so excited to see what they have in store for years to come.
Lake Street Dive will be a band I play for my future children.

  46. R.... B....

This video would also work for the song I'm a Barbie Girl.

  47. J.... S....

    I haven't loved a singers voice this much since ... Amy ... <3

  48. M.... H....

That stylist dude with the glasses has the best hair I've seen

  49. c.... ....

    I like her soul..

  50. N.... R....

I was so confused, why is everyone talking about acid. Then I realized their initials are also LSD. Clearly a newer fan, this is an amazing song, can't stop listening to this and Good Kisser!!

    N.... R....

HAHAHAHA me too! I was thinking what's this LSD talk? Pot maybe, but acid?

  51. R.... H....

This song is just stunning to me. It’s u-turn from LSD’s usual fare but it works so well. But Rachael - this is a masterclass on how to own a song. You don’t have to bring vocal gymnastics and acrobatics to really sell the emotional punch of a song. She held a little back here and that’s why this is such a stunning performance. And why she’s one of the finest vocalists of our time.

  52. C.... B....

    Beautiful as always. Thank you.

  53. C.... T....

She still has a great voice, but in the past the music matched the voice. It inspired me, this makes me sleepy. Bring back the old band, or change the name. This isn't the same thing.

  54. I.... D....

My 2 cents but this seems to suit LSD more than some of their snappy kind of stuff. Seems to allows for RP's voice to shine (sort of like What I'm Doing Here). Her voice is amazing!

  55. t.... ....

    Wow, this is intense. Beautiful...

  56. G.... A....

You can change but you can't hide.
She is like putty in our hands... not, I think is what we are being shown?

  57. B.... Z....

Thank you for teaching me white woman not necessarily with longer leg to be exceptionally attractive. You see how difficult to realize that truth in a heavily make-up world. Our dreamed change not necessarily more healthy.

  58. m.... ....

Love Lake Street Dive. Rachel is special, Bridget is fantastic and the whole band’s collaboration in songwriting drives their genius. The message in this song is needed in our world... thank you Rachel and Bridget for bringing it to us. Can’t wait to see you at Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids again this summer!

  59. D.... S....

    Outstanding ! Wonderful !

  60. J.... J....

What a voice. A beautiful sound in this wilderness of noise.

  61. S.... C....

I'm not sure about the video but I love the song.

  62. e.... b....

they are great and they are on tour kids

  63. S.... B....

People ! Think about the challenging times our world is facing politically, economically and spiritually. “Escaping an old battle, whispers dirty lies in my ear... We didn’t start this fight, and I won’t let it rule my heart tonight (...) “That history continues to keep us from the world we want to see... I can change...” this song is about more than the challenges individuals face... it’s about taking a look at oneself and wanting to change old ways of thinking and to contribute to a better more united society. Love you Lake Street Dive ❤️ Keep being the change we need in the world

    S.... B....

    Exactly!

    S.... B....

And the palate and some of the styling of the outfits reminds me of The Handmaid's Tale.

  64. M.... K....

So much love for this video ❤️❤️❤️ and song

  65. R.... ....

wow beautiful I know I can change I love this video Rachel thank you

  66. B.... ....

Yeah I don't know about this. They're too talented of a band to be writing this Ed Sheeran/Taylor Swift esque blandness.

  67. P.... B....

    Grown folk music

  68. B.... G....

Thank you for producing this wonderful song and this amazing video to accompany it. Really meaningful to me in my life recently. "Forget that old adage that history continues to keep us from the world we wanna see. I am scared that I won't get it right. But fear wont rule my heart tonight." Remarkable voice and presence.

  69. A.... A....

Became a fan at the right time, new music!

  70. C.... ....

Can't wait for the new album!!!

  71. A.... S....

A fashion ICON. Rachel is killing the game.

  72. S.... B....

Never seen a video concept like this before. Quite imaginative.

  73. J.... V....

Okay, so Rachael is gorgeous, but we always knew that. This video is like a million others: push the sex angle to get more viewers. I like LSD when the four of them are doing live performances. Where are the others?

    J.... V....

John V I saw zero sexualization. Every person changes clothes, nothing inherently sexual about that

  74. J.... A....

This is a beautiful song ❤️

  75. M.... W....

Brought me to tears. Thank you for changing my life with your music. I hope to see you all in stl again soon

  76. d.... ....

    the band.... they rock too.

  77. M.... D....

Lake Street Dive, everything you do is driven and not one of your songs feels like you "had" to write it. I love ALL of your songs and while this song and this style is certainly different, I love it the same amount in a different way.
We'll miss you at Red Wing Roots this year!

  78. I.... N....

The prettiest women really are the White ones.

  79. E.... ....

I wish it was a little bit longer.

  80. N.... T....

    Perfect

  81. J.... G....

Her voice is a 1000 foot waterfall that is at once ethereal and powerful.

  82. E.... E....

    Perfect rimjob

  83. R.... C....

Thank you for still making music that takes actual skill and talent, and while this is more mainstream and I hope you don't continue in that direction, it is still an amazing showcase for Rachel and the talent of the band.

  84. i.... ....

As always, Rachael's voice is smoky, slow-cooked, soul. The quality of the music and lyrics achieve the excellence we've now admired for years. I prefer to see them all together, but change is ok. Now I've got a little worm digging into my brain though. The credits are just the video credits, and not the band/song credits. Who wrote this one?

  85. E.... ....

    This is great. Brilliant video.

  86. E.... K....

This is genuine vulnerability and it is so beautiful... lyrics, video, musical notes. Well done.

  87. S.... H....

The weird part isn't that this song exists as much as that it's the "single".

  88. D.... A....

Is this why women take so long when choosing clothes?

  89. J.... C....

Rachel, Neko, Brandi, Lissie.....no shortage of great voices out there...did I mention First Aid Kit sisters???!!

  90. w.... ....

    Who wrote this?

    w.... ....

Another commenter here said it was by Rachael and Bridget, but I'm not sure how they knew that--the website gives a track listing, but without writing credits. So, Rachael and Bridget--maybe?

  91. j.... j....

this is the begining of the end of lake street dive. record company phasing the band out.......they think they can sell more main stream sad music with just rachael.......shame

    j.... j....

I think you'll find that there is still lots of great LSD ensemble work ahead. This is just pushing the boundaries a bit--and that's what artists are supposed to do.

    j.... j....

The band produced this album themselves, the record company isn't phasing anything.

  92. T.... ....

It's funny that sometimes there is a hidden message in a piece of music that is really in plain sight.
The lyrics suggest to me that she is fighting to change long held beliefs/hate taught to her by her parents. Could be a lot of different things, so I won't suggest any one specific type of hate. Bottom line is she wants to change. She says that about twenty times, so I think we get that.
However the video shows change using the metaphor of clothing. But she does none of the changing. The group around her, family, friends, etc, are helping her change. She puts very little effort into it. In the end, she is back to where she started, unchanged. So perhaps the video spells out the fact that the song in itself is really her trying to convince herself of something that will never happen.
Is this a fictional role, or is this her deep inner self?
What is the exact topic of the change?
Either way, a lot said with very few words, and an excellent piece of video to enhance the story. Well done!

    T.... ....

Rachael didn't write the first line about hate. Bridgette (Bass Player) did, but in any case there is no mention of "parents" so I guess people see in lyrics what they project from their own experience rather than what is in the mind of the songwriter. That is a good thing about songs that are not overly literal - they can be seen differently by different people and still have meaning.

    T.... ....

I interpreted it as a song about the industry pressures/demands. Knowing what we've heard about the music industry I can see someone(studio executive) telling them to sell out and do pop/cheese music so as to be even more popular. The metaphor of changing clothes is them trying different styles. Her/them saying they can change is only in words because deep inside they don't want to change. Their old self is the true self hence the end having the same outfit as the start. A lot of not so mainstream artists have talked/sang about this fight.
Or what Helen Kiniston Oney said.

    T.... ....

I saw them talk about this with Steven Colbert last night (AMAZING). Bridgette was the initial songwriter, inspired after the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville last summer.

    T.... ....

    Good take.

    T.... ....

I interpreted this as she is a full blown racist.

  93. P.... B....

worst video ever seen - who's done this horrible makeover?

  94. A.... F....

Just bought tickets for the London show. And its on my bday, so excited!

  95. A.... F....

The more i listen to this song the more i adore it

  96. 5.... ....

    Great voice.

  97. i.... ....

    Eat your heart out Adele.

  98. T.... ....

    Excellent.
