LaBelle, Patti - What Can I Do For You Lyrics

People want true things
Or nothing at all
People want sincerity
And nothing more
People need happiness as land needs rain
We need rain we need light we need love
Yes you'll find it so hard
To live without love love love
Love love love
Love love love
Whoa just say yeah (oh yeah)
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

People want to live (uh huh)
Not merely exist
People want to enjoy
Not suffer and fear no no no
People need understanding
Not tensions or confusion no no
Oh I wonder should the people who present us this solution talk about love love love
Love love love
Love love love
Oh yeah
Just say yeah (oh yeah)
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Say yeah
Ooh yeah

We need power
We need power
We need peace
Peace
Peace
Peace

I think we'll all agree
I think we'll all agree
That's not fighting (fighting)
That's not fighting
Because this ain't war
This ain't war
This ain't war
This ain't war
I know it's not too late to love love love
Love love love
Love love love
Love love love
Love love love

What can I do for you
What can you do for me

At the Masonic Temple, Detroit, Michigan - 1975, They brought the house down with this song. It felt like the energy was flowing from the stage, melding with the audience and blasting through the doors and out into the street. Magical moment.

    People want truth
    Or nothing at all
    People want sincerity
    And nothing false
People need happiness as land needs rain from above
We need rain-we need life-we need love

Most people find it so hard to live
    Without love, love, love
To live without love, love, love
    Oh yeah-oh yeah

    People want to live
    Not merely exist
    People want to enjoy
    Not suffer and fear
    People need understanding
    Not impatience nor confusion
Oh, I wonder, should we hate
    Those who present us disillusion
They talk about love, love, love
And they lie about love, love, love
They talk about love, love, love
    Oh yeah-oh yeah

We need power, we need power
And we need peace, peace, peace, peace
    I think we all agree
Let's stop fighting, let's stop fighting
And become sis and bro, 'sis and bro'
Sis and bro', sis and bro'
And show it's not too late to love, love, love
What can i do for you? What can you do for me?

  45. k.... ....

What is it about this song???? The music itself & vocals do something to me I can't put in words. I was raised in the Pentecostal church so I can say it definitely hits me in my spirit deeply. Somehow it makes me tearful and yet & it makes me want to dance dance dance.

  46. B.... T....

think I was posse to be born in 70s

  47. M.... E....

Even as a teen, I was stopped, motionless when this song was played. The lyrics, vocals, music; outstanding!

  48. A.... ....

Read these lyrics, true in my life, but true for our times. Indeed ahead of their time.

    People want truth
    Or nothing at all
    People want sincerity
    And nothing false
People need happiness as land needs rain from above
We need rain-we need life-we need love

To live without love, love, love

I had ALMOST forgotten about this classic!! Wow!! It takes you THERE!! You can't help but get up and dance uncontrollably (that's called freestyle)!!

  67. S.... H....

I remember hearing this at the Garage in NYC, Larry loved this track and would weave his magical audio web of sound around the entire dance floor wipping us in to a frenzy. For me It was a religious, spirit drenched experience, the crowd stomped, clapped ( there was always some one with a tamborine ) and jumped up and down on the wooden floor, till it felt like it was going to give way!! Patty, Nona and Sarah vocals summoned an powerful energy into the space and the crowd was caught up in a joyful experience!!

    S.... H....

Yes baby, I use to live in that place on King St. Those was the days

    S.... H....

    j.... v....

I'M 48 I WAS RAISED ON THIS REAL SHIT!

  74. m.... e....

...still amazing! Thru the headphones you can hear a male vocal leading into some of
the choruses and I've always wondered if it was Allen Toussaint...

  75. S.... H....

I first saw labelle sing this on stage at the Paridise Garage 1983 They had the crowd going bananas😄

    S.... H....

Steven Harris not possible as they broke up in the late seventies

    S.... H....

I know in 1983 Pattie released her 6th Lp, "I'm In Love Again" and was a breakout success. Nona, Sarah and Pattie have done a few tour dates several times since 1976. I saw them 2008 and 2009.

    S.... H....

Tracy Snyder they broke up in 1976 and as you said, the three of them started solo careers. Sarah was the first one to have a solo hit record with "Sinner Man ". They briefly reunited in 1991 and 1995 but only to release one single each of those years but to my knowledge, other than making a couple of appearances, they did not tour until the release of their first full length album ( in 32 years) in 2008. For that album ( Back To Now ) they toured until sometime in 2009. All three of them are still active. Nona was recently featured on single put out by some DJs named Soul Clap. It is a 1990s house music sounding single and the name of it is "This Is It". It can be heard on YouTube by searching for Soul Clap/ Nona Hen... Its really good. She can sing and write any kind of music. Sarah is appearing at a club called Joes Pub here in Manhattan soon and of course Patti still tours.

    S.... H....

I purchased that cd in 08, it was decent too. Thanks for that info on Nona, she is a powerhouse. I'll be certain to look it up. I think all of these ladies are dynamic and uber talented. Thanks again Drummer C.

    S.... H....

    Always correct.

  76. S.... L....

OH MY !!!!!!!!!!!! Do that CHIT LADIES !!!! .. they dont do it like this no more

  77. 3.... ....

The band is grooving so hard on this cut.

    3.... ....

New Orleans own The Meters and Chocolate Milk. Album recorded in New Orleans Seasaint Studios, Allen Toussaint owner, also arr. and producer of this album.

  78. M.... D....

    Great song to clean to!

  79. 3.... ....

    Another Allen Toussaint classic!

  80. R.... W....

.....but it was miss nona holding' down that bottom.......eeeew......and sarah dash.....
    THAT NOTE!

  81. S.... S....

Patti know she held that note! WERK!

    S.... S....

    +Sherri Solomon yessssssssssss

    S.... S....

    @sljjrphd lol!

    S.... S....

Actually that was Sarah Dash holding that note

    S.... S....

I was going to note the same thing. Patti is hittin' and holdin' that very last note, but Sarah Dash is providing the power-house vocals and harmony throughout, as even Patti acknowledges when Sarah hits that note in the live video of this tune, and looking fine as hell while doing it!.

  82. T.... C....

SANG IT!! and I still have ALL those Albums and 45's  Jamin right now!

  83. E.... S....

    Great classic.......

  84. T.... S....

    Sing the song girls...

  85. d.... ....

Patti and the girls really rocked it out with this great cut on the album featuring Lady Marmalade we know what the incredible smash hit was and i remember like yesterday those fabulous costumes. Love you all what great music

  86. L.... S....

    Very relevant in 2015!!!

  87. T.... M....

so good are those ladies of soul.

  88. C.... ....

I saw them perform this in person back in 1974. Baltimore Civic Center. I was 18. Me and four other white gay boys. Probably the only white boys in the audience. From the moment they stepped out on stage we screamed like little girls. We were soooooo excited. Patti, Nona, and Sarah tore up that place. What an incredible night. Hearing this now...I'm there again.

    C.... ....

+Chuckscott I saw them here in LA twice!

    C.... ....

You're story is hilarious and cute at the same time 😍😍😍 I bet they were amazing 🤩🤩🤩

    C.... ....

I saw them with my friend Milton at the War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville around then too @Chuckscott! They tore the roof off!!!

    C.... ....

I saw them circa 1974 in Central Park, NY during a summer long series of concerts. Tickets were less than $10 but their performance was gold/platinum!

    C.... ....

    Those are THE DAYS!

  89. S.... B....

    Y'all better sang now!

  90. K.... M....

Wow. Wonder if my mom still has this record. I remember singing this song and becoming hoarse bcause I can't blow like Patti.

  91. C.... F....

The lyrics! The message: People want TRUTH or nothing at all, People want to live not merely exist, People need understanding, We Need POWER, We Need PEACE, Lets Stop FIGHTING and become sis and bro! Its not TOO LATE to LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!! What can I do for YOU, what can you do for ME!!! YES!!!!!! The ever powerful LABELLE!!

    C.... F....

    WORD!!!

    C.... F....

    Pure energy.  Good energy.

    M.... ....

    +MySugarWallz And power. Good power.

  94. 3.... ....

So much energy in this tune.

  95. v.... ....

We knew even back then that these girls were way ahead of their time.  Nona Hendryx was a writing ass visionary.

    v.... ....

    Yeah you right.

    v.... ....

    Love this song

    v.... ....

Nona didn't write this one tho. She can however weite her ass off lol.

  96. J.... S....

I remember seeing Labelle and lots of other old groups in Brooklyn at the Brooklyn Paramount in the 60's.  This is 70's Labelle and the voices don't change. there was a reunion in 2009 in Atlanta and I swear they sound the same.  Timeless! wonderful!

    J.... S....

    I was there!!!!!

  97. W.... E....

The first song tht I felt deep within my soul, I thank Labelle for the hit nd the memories!.
