La Dispute - Bury Your Flames Lyrics

Oh, we could blame it on our hands
They lifted the drink to our mouths so we drank it
Or we could blame it on our bodies
They say, we like the way we feel when we get touched
You've got your fingers snared in my veins
I think it's time you pulled them out
And I don't care about the flesh it'll tear
It isn't flesh that I'm worried about

We held a match to keep our sight on the path
But the flame gave up and we lost it
And I've knelt for the last three years
Trying to find it back with the blackened matchstick
Today I'm not afraid of failure
The past is a flower
The future, the snow
I wasn't ever close to perfect
But I never let you go

You let your doubt like a river lead you on and on and on
And you will never get back to save what you had
Hear me promise
I will bury your problems in me
So sleep soundly
I held your heart in my fingers
Now it's gone, it's gone, it's gone and you will never admit
That you bid the wind blow the flames out
And buried the coals in the sea
You tricked me

You came back and you brought floods
Wearing a necklace made of hearts that you'd dragged through the mud
And I guess I wasn't quite sure what to say to you
But then I saw mine, almost reached out to grab it
Said, darling, you're the only one on earth I want to have it
But now I'm not so sure that was true
After the hell you put it through
But there was no sharp pain this time
Just the ghost of your presence compressing my chest like a vine
An unshakable absence
Like most of my insides crawled out of my mouth and went west
But that's fine
We cast our hearts in plaster
We imagined our bodies were fashioned of stone
But they chipped at the brick and the mortar
We found out that we're only layers of skin hiding bones
And our bones are like chains, old and rusted in the rain
They're going to snap when the weight shifts

You moved like a fire through the forest
Your hands were as red as the skin on your lips
You'd been flirting with distance, princess
I tasted its spit in your kiss
Oh mistress, know
Today I will bury the flames of your failure
The past is a liar
The future, a whore
I'll lay your bones into the earth and you will haunt my head no more
Oh, we could blame it on our hands
Oh, we could blame it on our hands
But it was our mouths that opened up to swallow
(Oh, we could blame it on our hands)
And our heads that commanded us drink
But as I buried your flames in the dirt
I watched the smoke pull your ghost from the grave
And I fear they'll only lay in wait
Until we are face to face again
Just when I said, I'm moving, I'm moving on
I felt them come to life again and again and again and again

There are fires
That tear through valleys and make dust from grass
There are fires
There are wires
Bound in blue light, they pull us to the past
There are wires
We are tired
We should have known from the start that this thing wouldn't last
We are tired

We could blame it on our hands
They lifted the drink to our mouths so we drank it. Or
we could blame it on our bodies
they say, "We like the way we feel
    when we get touched."
You've got your fingers snared in my veins
I think it's time you pulled them out.
And I don't care about the flesh it'll tear
it isn't flesh that I'm worried about.
We held a match to keep our sight on the path but the flame gave up and we lost it.
And I've knelt for the last three years trying to find it back with the blackened
    matchstick.
Today I'm not afraid of failure.
    "The past is a flower.
    The future: the snow."
I wasn't ever close to perfect, but

We cast our hearts in plaster, we imagined our bodies we fashioned from stone. But when the bricks chipped at the mortar, we found out our bodies are MADE OF SKIN AND OF BONE!!

    J.... P....

James Phillips I thinks it's "layers of skin hiding bone" could be wrong. Still one of my favorite lines too!

    J.... P....

Definitely layers of skin and bone. Lyrically unbelievable song

  11. A.... N....

    Who’s still listening in 2018? 🙋🏼‍♀️

    A.... N....

    Lyss Neidig LA DISPUTE FOREVER

  12. h.... p....

His emotions are so raw in this song, it's just beautiful.

  13. T.... E....

I don't care about the flesh it will tear,

It isn't flesh that I'm worried about.

  14. D.... s....

This song will always be a favorite..

  15. A.... ....

    perfect song

  16. L.... ....

If La Dispute ever had a song on the older Guitar Hero games, this would be it

    L.... ....

The Last Lost Continent? what about that song?

    L.... ....

I agree, this song fucking kills it. Whatever it is, it's fucking lifeless being thrown around.

    L.... ....

thank god they didn't so i can still listen to them and be smug

  17. M.... D....

This guy is the fucking man.

  18. F.... T....

The lead singer reminds me of Aaron Weiss from mewithoutYou and I friggen love it. Great band I found thanks to a guy at work lol.

  19. M.... L....

One of my favourite songs by La Dispute.

  20. P.... ....

im not a huge fan of the vocals, although I will say it is so fitting for the style of music, he kinda comes off whiny IMO lol that's just me, but god does the guitar in this song pump me up lol, just so badass

  21. y.... ....

All of la dispute's songs have this raw and beautifully melancholy emotion that always creeps up on me whenever I listen to them. They're such an amazing band <3

  22. N.... ....

Best La Dispute instrumentally, amazing lyrics. Great song.

  23. Z.... H....

Why is anyone comparing this band to BMTH? BMTH sucks dick.

    Z.... H....

Zeus Hiera honestly I love both bands for different reasons. I don't think one is necessarily worse, they're just different.

    Z.... H....

Zeus Hiera Agreed. Totally two different bands and genres. La Dispute is actual poetry, genuine emotion. BMTH is just some band for edgy 12 year olds lmfao.

  24. d.... ....

omg guys everybody has different opinions.
If someone does or doesn't like something, you don't have to bash them.
    simple as that

  25. W.... S....

just know i thumbsed u up by accident it was suppost the be a dislike.

  26. T.... ....

how the fuck are they terrible?

  27. A.... ....

Bull fucking shit, BMTH is TERRIBLE. Sorry.

  28. S.... ....

BMTH is an amazing band , so is La dispute

    THE END

    S.... ....

Samuele lol they're alright but they couldnt ever possibly hope to achieve the raw musical and poetic talent that La dispute displays in literally every song.

    S.... ....

    BMTH LULS

  29. R.... ....

"Just Saying..." She says. She adds at the end. JUST LIKE EVERONE ELSE WHO IS INFECTED.

We cast our hearts in plaster. We imagined our bodies were fashioned from stone but they chipped at the brick and the mortar. We found out that we're only layers of skin hiding bone...
    Breathtaking lyrics -3

  37. a.... m....

This is a really great band, but you have to be into stuff like this... I listened to this same song like 2 months ago and didn't like it but I have started listening to some weird crap lately and now its freakin awesome.

  38. G.... B....

better compared to At The Drive-In singer...

    G.... B....

Why? They both sing from their heart and are amazing. Why try to insult it?

  39. I.... ....

going to see them live in baltimore gonna be great

  40. B.... P....

For you guys who wants to catch a Live Performance. La Dispute will be playing live. Tomorrow. March 23, At 4:30. On AudioTree Live.

  52. K.... ....

this dudes voice is awsome but strained aha
    alot like bmths singer

  53. Y.... W....

like the punk overtone, very nice

  54. S.... ....

Very MeWithoutYou-ish.. just a bit more upbeat.

  55. M.... ....

    The "singer(?)" is awful

  56. L.... G....

They're more first wave screamo, but they're still pretty good. Better then most shit I hear on the radio.

  57. t.... ....

    Wonderfullllllll. <3

  58. p.... ....

@GenocidaI 0:01 and onward is epic as fuck!

  59. E.... S....

@ProminentReborn much more refined indeed sir.
theyre on a whole different level.
    hey.
at least i didnt say they sounded like nickelback.

  60. P.... ....

@ERICistheafterparty I can relate the two, I just place La Dispute in an entirely different spectrum; HHLL learns more towards a sporadic, not so much grind, and an awkward emotive vocalist while La Dispute is much more refined... Most of the stuff in this song is pentatonic I believe, carries a classic rock feel... I would just never put this near HHLL, it'd be an insult, and I'm a fan of both. HHLL is a kids band to me

  61. E.... S....

@ProminentReborn actually pretty close with the scratchy vocals with jazz influenced minor scales and similar music theories with a moderate tempo.
except the lyrics are more thought out.

  62. P.... ....

@ERICistheafterparty No where close. Try again.

  63. t.... ....

i love how much emotion they put into their songs.

  64. C.... F....

@skippinggirlvinegar He's not trying anything. He's simply conveying emotion. He's just yelling.

  65. J.... T....

@carlstrum No the Gallows are much more angry and no where near as poetic and all the Gallows seem to care about is fighting

  66. b.... a....

mewithout you cheap imitation ! @TheRoland14

  67. T.... ....

    @xNettlesx sure thing

  68. J.... N....

    @TheGreatDivider01 ok, thanks bro

  69. T.... ....

@xNettlesx it's french... soo... it would be lah and the french pronunciation for dispute ;)

  70. J.... N....

is the band name pronounced "lah dispute" or some other way?....shit's amazing, though

  71. E.... S....

sounds like a more badass heavyheavylowlow

  72. C.... S....

    this is just like gallows

  73. R.... M....

    it reminds me MEWITHOUTYOU!lol

  74. V.... ....

    I love the lead guitar

  75. T.... ....

    Such an amazing band.

  76. t.... ....
