@William Herring This is a great conversation you guys are having. Black people in slavery in the west were forced to accept their oppressor's religion 'christinanity'. There is an aspect of christian religious history that doesnt get spoken about much, and that is the 'political' side of it and how there were early groups in christianity that were divided on aspects of the religion, and how they fought each other until their version of 'christianity' became 'orthodox'. The group that became known as the Roman Catholic church is the party that is responsible for the popular version of christianity that is considered 'orthodox' in the world. That group is responsible for the deaths of alot of the earlier christians that had older beliefs that conflicted with what they considered 'orthodox'. Yes, there were followers of the teachings of Yeshua in Ethiopia that predate the transatlantic slave trade. But those early ethiopian followers werent bowing down to portraits of white jesus, celebrating dec 25th with xmas trees and doing easter egg hunts with easter bunnies in april. The version of christianity that is practiced today was shaped in europe by whites. And that 'version' is a white man's religion. Thats why he paints jesus, all the bible characters, and god WHITE to show you that it is his white religion. And that 'version' is what was beaten and raped into blacks in the transatlantic slave trade and the chattel slavery of the west.
William Herring I think when he said that, he meant our oppressors interpretation of Christianity. The holy scriptures have been translated and interpreted in numerous ways. Even Holy figures have been painted and drawn to resemble Europeans even though the Bible describes Jesus as having darker skin and hair of wool.
Most American bound slaves were taken from west Africa, which is about 6000km from Ethiopia. And there was no native Christianity in west Africa at the time.
