I remember when after Sinead O'Connor ripped the picture of the Pope on SNL, she was at a tribute show to Bob Dylan. Kristofferson introduced her as the crowd began to boo her through her whole song. Before leaving the stage, Kristofferson said to her "don't let the bastards get you down". I thought that she had to suffer the reaction of the crowd to her actions, but I laughed at Kristofferson's comment and thought it was a classic moment.

First off, I would like to thank Chris Kristofferson for his service to the United States. Second, what I got from this song is even though we have a lot of bad things going on in the world and people making stupid decisions, we should not let that get to us. We need to keep on fighting and try our best to do what’s right as a society.

Kris was indeed an Army helicopter pilot, and achieved the rank of Captain, but served in Germany, not Vietnam.  He resigned his commision in 1965 to pursue music, or his next assignment would be as a teacher at West Point.

Not corporate greed, per se, but there was certainly foreign intervention in the form of French soldiers and generals who came over here to fight with the rebels.  And there was certainly some level of greed involved, at least on the part of some participants, because it's no coincidence that so many of the "founding fathers" were also the richest and most powerful people in the colonies at that point.  You can read, for example, Robert Harvey's recent book on the American Revolution "A Few Bloody Noses", which examines the way that the colonies' ruling class co-opted a people's revolution and turned it into something that merely re-invented the status-quo but did not threaten their power.

Yes, the founding of the United States, and not just the colonies themselves, was based on racist genocidal motives, against Africans but especially against the Native Americans.  Again I can refer to Harvey or to other modern historians, but the reasons for the revolution had a lot less to do with taxes on tea or with issues like stationing soldiers in private homes than it had to do with the British agreement after the French-Indian War which would have prohibited the colonists from taking any more land from the Native population west of the Appalachians.

Apropos of nothing, but the phrase "Don't let the bastards get you down:" came from a note that John Wayne wrote and sent to Rock Hudson shortly after it was revealed that Rock was gay and suffering from AIDS.

How can someone NOT know what Kris stands for? He has 30+ years of albums. He has always questioned authority and himself. But he also has a belief that we can somehow all get along "someday". He's always fought bigotry. Which is better than I can say for a lot of people who "claim" to follow in his, Johnny and Willie's footsteps.
